“May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.”- Eph. 3:18-19
You cannot meditate upon God’s greatness without being impressed. We marvel at His wisdom, power, etc., but perhaps more than anything else we think of His love. We do so for good reason–” God is love“. But regardless of how much we speak of it and rejoice in it we can never fully comprehend it. Paul speaks of the dimensions of God’s love – it’s breath, length, depth, and height ( Eph. 3:18), but admits that it is beyond what he can discern or describe. He wanted his readers to “know the love of Christ”, yet he says it “passeth knowledge“. The point is that although we can know of it, and the effects of it, we cannot know all of it. It is without limits. There is nothing to which it can be compared. It has no equal. The magnitude of His love is marvelous. It exceeds the limits of our understanding. God’s love is unmeasurable!
As the song says:
Could we with ink the ocean fill
And were the skies of parchment made
Were every stalk on earth a quill
And every man a scribe by tradeTo write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry
Nor could the scroll contain the whole
Though stretched from sky to sky
God’s love is indescribable. Trying to describe the love of God is like trying to count the drops of water in the seven seas, or the grains of sand on all the beaches, or the stars in the sky–you just can’t do it. Of all the subjects that could occupy your mind none are more mind-boggling than this. The most spiritual minded brilliant scholars in the world cannot exhaust the subject.
God’s love is unchanging. Adding to the wonder of God’s love is the fact that it is unfailing. It is not some fleeting concern for our terrible plight, nor a reward for some good deed. It is unconditional and unchangeable. Regardless of our faults and failures there is never a moment when we are unloved! Nothing “shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Rom. 8:39)– HDS
