MORNING MANNA            5-7-25

MORNING MANNA                    5-7-25
THINGS TO REMEMBER

Is it just me? Is it the wretched condition of the world? Or is it the struggles my loved ones are going through? I’m not sure–I suspect it is all three. Whatever the reason, every time I sit down to write it seems that my mind goes straight to the subject of hardships, difficulties, and suffering. It seems that I can’t help but think about the need for comfort, change, and courage, etc. and I want to help.Sometimes I think, maybe I should stop spending so much time dealing with these things and move on to other subjects. But, it is hard to ignore such things when they touch so many that you love. Seeing their desperate needs I feel driven to do something. I realize that I don’t have all the answers and I can’t work miracles, but the greatness of their needs motivates me to do what I can–although it never seems enough. There is only so much that I or anyone else can do. Other than pray, which is most important, all I can do is show love and share the truth of God’s Word. Only God can actually meet the needs, and His exceeding great and precious promises assures us that He can and will. We, however, must appropriate what He makes available. We should never assume that our needs will be supplied if we neglect the appointed means by which they come to us.If I could say anything to those in need of encouragement it would be this. Regardless of how dark the night, how deep the valley, or how dismal the outlook, Christ can help, and that is our hope! Change, of some sort, always comes to those who trust and obey the Word of God. If He doesn’t change your circumstances He changes you. If the Bible is true, and it is, there is no problem too great for God to solve. So, as you set sail on another day, I leave you with this thought. It is not always a matter of learning something new, sometimes all we need is a reminder of certain important truths. So I am reminding you that our hope is found in the fact that God has promised to be “our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble”.( Ps. 46:1). The nature of your need, the enormity of your enemies, or the characteristics of your challenge has absolutely nothing to do with God’s ability to meet your need. If you are a child of God in the will of God you have every reason to be hopeful. If your outlook is bleak, rather than bright, your focus is on the wrong thing. There are numerous reasons why this is so.He who is love has set His affection on you.
He who knows His own is acquainted with all your ways.
He who never sleeps is aware of your situation.
He whose ear is always open is alert to your prayers.
He who has all power in heaven and earth is able to meet your need.
He whose grace is all sufficient is available anytime.
He who cannot lie has given us absolute assurance.

Knowing we serve such a gracious God should be enough to encourage us during the gravest trials, greatest temptations, and ghastliest troubles. He never fails!- HDS

FACING THE FACTS

“And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man...” 2 Sam. 12:7
“And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD…” 2 Sam. 12:13

Frances Schaeffer said that there are times “when a negative message is needed before anything positive can begin”. He was right. As unpleasant as it is, man has to see and admit his need before he can get what he needs. He has to face the facts before he can find and fix the problem. We see this perhaps best of all in Solomon’s search for satisfaction. Until he discovered the futility of life without God he did not seek God as his source of satisfaction.

This is not to say that we must conduct such an experiment as Solomon did before we can get on the right track. There are better ways. For one thing we can learn from those who are older and wiser. Or we can look at the lives of others and see what works and what doesn’t. But, best of all we can listen to the counsel of God’s Word and let it serve as our guide. That will bring us face to face with our faults and failures. It forces us to deal with the unpleasant negatives in our life. It makes us think about both the “goodness and severity of God“( Rom. 11:22).

Pleasant preaching might be popular, but it isn’t always profitable. Speaking smooth things, that offends nobody might entertain, but it does not always edify. What people need isn’t always what they want. Human nature being what it is, we would rather not think about the negatives in our life, but in order to advance we must. We can’t get better until we realize that there is a need for change. As related to salvation, we fail to find forgiveness until we are first forced to focus on our faults. We must see ourselves as sinners before we can become saints. And even after we are saved we sin and find ourselves in need of forgiveness. To receive it we must confess our sins. But we don’t do that until we are confronted with our sins. That’s why preaching that never hurts seldom helps. Sin must be described and denounced. Count it a blessing when someone loves you enough to tell you the truth, although it hurts.

It is crucial that we regularly examine ourselves in the light of God’s Word. Naturally we would rather brag about our success than deal with our failures, but we can’t succeed until we see where we’ve failed. Pretending we’re better than we are never helps. It is only when we get brutally honest about our condition that we are able to get better. Is it pleasant? No, but it is indeed profitable. – HDS

“HIS BILLOWS”
“Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: All thy waves and thy billows are gone over me. Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, And in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.” Psalm‬ ‭42‬:‭7‬-‭8‬ ‭

Annie Johnson Flint is one of my favorite poets. Many years ago she wrote a wonderful poem entitled “His Billows” based on these words from Psalm 42:7 “—All thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.” Do yourself a favor–find it and read it.

The point of the poem, as the title indicates, is that regardless of our difficulties they are “His billows”. In other words, God either appoints or allows everything that happens to us. That’s right, I said, “everything”–no exceptions! He is always in control. He does so for a reason and, if we maintain the right attitude, He will use them for our good.

Here’s the problem– sometimes we really don’t believe Romans 8:28 like we claim we do, at least when the problem is personal. We like to quote it to others when they are going through great difficulties, but we don’t seem to accept it when the problem is ours. And when bad things happen that we can’t change or control we tend to get bent out of shape.

If you’re struggling with your attitude regarding your afflictions, maybe these words from an unknown writer will help: “Stand up in the place where the dear Lord has put you, and there do your best. God gives us trial tests. He puts life before us as an antagonist face to face. Out of the buffeting of a serious conflict we are expected to grow strong. The tree that grows where tempests toss its boughs and bend its trunk often almost to breaking, is often more firmly rooted than the tree which grows in the sequestered valley where no storm ever brings stress or strain. The same is true of life. The grandest character is grown in hardship.”

Remember my dear friend–it is “character”, not comfort, that counts. For every trial there is a reason and a season – it won’t last forever. For the child of God in the will of God the best is yet to come.- HDS

MORNING MANNA           5-3-25

May 3, 2025 By Pastor David Stone

As this old song says:

“Day by day, and with each passing moment,
Strength I find, to meet my trials here;
Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment,
I’ve no cause for worry or for fear.
He Whose heart is kind beyond all measure
Gives unto each day what He deems best—
Lovingly, its part of pain and pleasure,
Mingling toil with peace and rest.”

LEARNING TO LISTEN

“A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels;”–Prov. 1:5

As a boy one of the most irritating things I heard was, “I told you so!”, or “Didn’t I tell you?” And as a father to eight I have often dropped that bomb on my kids. I didn’t want to hear it and I’m sure my children felt the same, but sometimes we all need reminders like that. Being forced to face our failures can be a good, although unpleasant, thing. Especially when we have no one to blame but ourselves.Thinking about this, I can’t help but wonder what God thinks when we turn a deaf ear to His instructions and warnings. Although He speaks out of the depths of His great wisdom and glorious love we tend to ignore what He says– to our own detriment. In doing this we deprive ourselves of His blessings and expose ourselves to great danger. That’s foolish.Whether as a child or a Christian I’m sure we can all look back and think of those times when we wish we had listened. And that reminds me of another one of the least favorite things my parents said–“When are you going to learn to listen?” Yeah, I bet you’ve heard that too. And you probably responded just like I did– with a blank stare. But it is actually a good question and worthy of our consideration. When will we learn to listen? After we’ve humiliated ourselves? Hurt ourselves? Harmed others? Hit rock-bottom? Would we not be better off to listen and learn?God has given us competent counsel, clear commands, wise warnings, and precious promises. He demands that we listen and He deserves to be heard, but we don’t always listen. And when we refuse we have only ourselves to blame for the outcome. If we listen and learn we have only God to praise. Without His aid we neither would nor could do as we should. God still speaks today, and “A wise man will hear–“. So the question is, “Are you listening? -HDS
