BE AN ENCOURAGER

February 9, 2018 By Pastor David Stone

BE AN ENCOURAGER
“Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.”–1 Thess. 5:11

Years ago during the world lightweight boxing championship match, a Scotsman was fighting against a man from the United States who was six years younger. The Scot was the reigning champion, and the bout was being fought before a crowd of 20,000 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Soon after the match began, it was clear that the fight would be a close one. So chanting began to arise from the Scottish crowd. It was singing. It became louder and louder, with hundreds of male voices singing a strange Scottish melody!

These men were singing to encourage their champion. As he fought for his title, but even more for the respect of the Scottish people, they wanted him to know they were behind him.

As a member of the body of Christ, it’s your job to encourage one another as well in the great battle of faith. When you see some who are struggling in obedience to Christ’s call on their lives, and others who are on the front lines expanding the Kingdom of God in places all over the world, your role is to be an encourager and cheer them on. Then, when it’s your turn to step into the ring, they’ll encourage you too.

Never underestimate the power of an encouraging word. Studies have proven that words of encouragement help those who are struggling. So find someone today who needs an encouraging word and help them fight their battle of faith by encouraging them!

Pray that God would show you someone who you can help fight the battle of faith today with an encouraging word or note.– Senior Living

GOSSIP

February 8, 2018 By Pastor David Stone

GOSSIP
“And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.”-– 1 Tim. 5:13“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”-– Eph. 4:29

Jack Graham tells this humorous, but serious story: A well-known gossip by the name of Martha Jones attended the same church for several years. One day, it was discovered that she had a benign tumor that had to be removed. So the following Sunday, a prayer request about this was printed in the church bulletin.

As the church members came in and took their seats, sporadic laughter could be heard in the congregation as people opened their bulletins. Curious, the pastor took a look to see what the fuss was about. Apparently, there was a typo that read, “Pray for Martha Jones, who is in the hospital having a rumor removed.”

This brings us to the next kind of lie: gossip. This is information you receive that you don’t know is true, but you pass it on because it’s too good to keep to yourself. That sounds innocent enough, especially if you didn’t start the rumor. But reputations have been ruined by the spreading of untrue gossip.

So to avoid the lie of gossip, follow two simple rules: 1) If you don’t know it’s true, don’t repeat it. And, 2) don’t pass information on to anyone who doesn’t need to know it. Steering clear of gossip will maintain your integrity as you love others well enough to uphold their reputation and character!

MAINTAIN INTEGRITY AND PROTECT OTHERS’ REPUTATIONS BY STEERING CLEAR OF GOSSIP.

With Eternity in View

February 7, 2018 By Pastor David Stone

With Eternity in View

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

History records many stories of great heroes of the faith, one of whom was Polycarp. He was a committed Christian living during the time of the Roman Empire. The Caesars thought they were gods, and they wanted the people to start worshipping them as such. The basic routine was for Roman subjects to swear by the genius of Caesar, essentially saying that Caesar is lord. It made the Caesars happy, but it proved to be a dilemma for Christians, because for them, Jesus was Lord.

Among them was Polycarp, who was arrested and brought to the arena. The Roman proconsul gave him a choice: either curse the name of Christ and make a sacrifice to Caesar, or die.

So Polycarp answered, “For eighty and six years have I been his servant, and he has done me no wrong, and how can I blaspheme my King who has saved me?”

They took him to the stake to be burned, and when the soldier lit the fire, the flames encircled Polycarp but didn’t touch him as he sang praises to God. So he was thrust through with a spear, and his blood extinguished the flames.

“Such a tragedy,” we say. But I don’t think of it as a tragedy. Everyone has to die. The tragedy would have been if Polycarp had denied the Lord. We put so much stock in what happens here and now, but we don’t think about eternity.

Maybe you’re going through a fire of sorts right now, a time of great difficulty. I want to remind you that if you’re a Christian, Jesus Christ is there with you. So don’t lose hope. I know it may seem like there is no end in sight, but take heart. He is with you. And He will see you through it.–Greg Laurie

LIVING FOR JESUS

February 6, 2018 By Pastor David Stone

LIVING FOR JESUS
“For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:”–Phil. 3:20

When asked what he would do if he knew the Lord was coming today, the old farmer said, “Plow”. What would you say? That farmer felt that was the work to which he was assigned by the Lord, and felt no need to do something else. But what would God have you to do? If you are confused about it just read the Bible. You don’t need to hear an audible voice from heaven telling you what God expects. The Word of God makes the will of God perfectly clear. We have no reason to be confused about the manner in which we ought to live. “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”– Phil. 2:13

If I have to change the way I’m living because I think I’m dying then I’m living wrong. I’ve been dying as long as I’ve been living, so everyday should be spent living like I’m dying. As to how I ought to live no one ever said it better than Paul—“For to me to live is Christ..”(Phil. 1:21). That describes a life well lived! That’s God’s intended purpose for every believer and the only wise way to spend one’s life. We live for Christ by living like Christ through Christ who strengthens us ( Phil. 4:13). And doing so results in all our needs being supplied “according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus“( Phil. 4:19). Nothing better could be said of a person than “to live is Christ“. He is the goal, the pattern, the means, and reward.–HDS

A REASONABLE RESPONSE

February 5, 2018 By Pastor David Stone

A REASONABLE RESPONSE
“shine as lights in the world”–Phil. 2:15
I was on a roll recently and couldn’t seem to help myself. Every time I clicked on Facebook I saw something that prompted me to hit “like”, “share”, or “comment”. Finally I decided enough is enough and I got off. However, that experience got me to thinking–“What is a reasonable response to what’s going on in the world?

We live in a fallen world and our beloved nation is coming apart at the seams. Everywhere you look there is corruption, conflict and confusion. You can’t get through a day without feeling the need to protest something. We keep checking off places where we shop because they support things we don’t agree with. We refuse to buy certain products, watch certain networks, use certain services, listen to certain people, support certain causes, etc. because of what they promote. It never ends. We could spend our lives reading and commenting about all the bad stuff in the world. Or we could pack our bags and travel from one protest to another, uniting our voices with other disgruntled people. Or we could ———-? What should we do?

I’m not saying we should just ignore all these things and shrug them off like they are unimportant, but I do believe we ought to use some common sense. While we should stand against sin and separate ourselves from the world, we cannot escape being exposed to its corruption. That’s the point Paul was making when he wrote, ” I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators: Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.“(1 Cor. 5:9-10)

We trouble ourselves more than we should by expecting, even demanding, godly behavior from ungodly people. We always seem to go to an extreme. Some become like a monk in a monastery isolating themselves from the world. Others just go with the flow or adopt the ways of the world. But,if we are wise we will maintain a proper balance. We should not be indifferent toward sin, but neither should we be obsessed with protesting it. We have something better to do.

The only cure for the ills of the world is Christ. The only hope for the sinner is to be born again. The only message that can bring salvation is the gospel. And the only work deserving our undivided attention and best effort is delivering the gospel to the world. We must not allow ourselves to get distracted from that—regardless of how good the cause that we are promoting or protesting.

If we are to serve God we must not cut ourselves off from people or else we could never reach folks with the gospel. Although we are not of the world we are in it. What we need is contact without conformity. As salt and light we are to affect those around us without being affected by them. Paul said it well in Phil. 2:15-16, “That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.” –HDS
