SORROW IS BETTER THAN LAUGHTER

August 27, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the  countenance the heart is made better.”–Ecc. 7:3

Every once in a while you hear something that turns your thoughts upside down, or in this case right side up! A good example of this is found in Ecc.7:3 where Solomon says, “Sorrow is better than laughter“. And you’re probably thinking, “You’ve got to be kidding!”. To our way of thinking it is much better to laugh than to cry. This just goes to show that our thoughts are not always God’s thoughts ( Isa. 55:8-9). Our question is “How can this be?” Solomon gives us the answer–“ for by the sadness of the  countenance the heart is made better.”

What’s best for our soul isn’t always the most pleasing to our senses. This is not to say that laughter isn’t good for us. The Bible says, “A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance”(Prov. 15:13), “a merry heart doeth good like a medicine“(Prov. 17:22). But laughter is not nearly so transforming as sorrow is. We are strengthened by our struggles. If you don’t believe it just spend some time with a Spirit-filled Christian who is suffering or terminally ill. You will learn more from him in an hour than from the party hearty crowd in a lifetime. Contrary to what you might think or feel, sometimes the best things that happen to us brings tears to our eyes. That’s why the Psalmist said, “It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that  I might learn thy statutes.”(Psa. 119:71).When God promised that “And we know that all things work together for good to them  that love God, to them who are the called according to his  purpose.“(Rom. 8:28) that includes the things that make us cry. –HDS

PEACE IN THE STORM

August 26, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be  still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto  them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?”–Mark 4:39-40
Only God can give you the peace you need to weather the storms of  life.
This story about Jesus and His disciples mimics our everyday lives  sometimes. Things are going well, and life is running as smoothly as a  peaceful sea, then the clouds begin to darken, and the waves swell. The phone  call of the passing of a loved one; the pink slip at work; the terminal  illness; the loss of a home; the financial strain; the worry of the future.  All these storms can suddenly bring waves of fear and clouds of confusion.  What to do? Where to turn? Who can help?
Experiencing storms in life is a natural occurrence. We all struggle with  trials and face difficulties. The problem isn’t the storm we face but our  reaction to the storm. Do we turn to the great Creator? Or do we try to  tighten our sails and weather the storm on our own?
The most comforting fact about a storm is knowing that as a Christian,  Christ is in your boat. He’s weathering the storm with you. He’s just waiting  for you to turn to Him and call out for His help. The disciples tried to  handle the storm on their own, but realized the only One who could help was  Christ. Even so, the only One who can bring you peace in the midst of a storm  is your Heavenly Father.
What storm are you weathering right now? What difficulty are you trying to  handle on your own? Even experienced fishermen with years of training  couldn’t handle the storm that night. They had to turn the Jesus for help.  Don’t try to handle life’s storms on your own. You can’t do it! Only God  can give you the help and peace you need to weather the storm you face. Why  not seek Him right now and rely on Him to see you through?–Daily in the Word

A TIME SUCH AS THIS

August 25, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“…who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?“– Esther 4:14
Some times I feel like I’m living in the wrong generation. Things have changed so much since I started preaching over 50 years ago that I feel out of place. I wonder, “What in the world am I doing in the world?” Even with all the effort put forth by preachers and churches for centuries the world keeps getting worse rather than better. That causes some to say, “What’s the use?” So here we are in an ever changing world with a never changing message to a people who refuse to change for the better. Why?

Paul said, “to depart, and to be with Christ” would be “far better“(Phil. 1:23), but then he quickly added, “Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful“(Phil. 1:24). That makes me realize that if this is the wrong generation I wouldn’t be living! In spite of the fact that I feel out of place, labeled too old fashioned, out of touch with the times, etc., God has a reason for me to be here or I wouldn’t. So regardless of how I feel or what others think, I am exactly where I need to be. So are you. We are a part of this generation for a purpose—“for such a time as this”.

Since God hasn’t given me a reversed version of His Word, nor the liberty to change it, nor permission to quit, I need to keep preaching it as it is to people as they are. The need to change is with this generation. Rather than me/you backing off, giving up, or joining the ranks of this generation, it needs to return to the old paths. It’s not my job to change the world, but my joy to tell the world of the One who can and eventually will. May it be said of us what was said of David who “served his own generation by the will of God” (Acts 13:36)—HDS

STRENGTH TO KEEP GOING

August 24, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.“– Matt. 11:28-30

Years ago when the New York Yankees were managed by Ralph Houk, baseball game schedules were much more demanding. In fact, teams usually played at least one double-header every week. Occasionally, a player would get sick of the grind and ask for permission to sit out a game.

“I know how you feel,” Houk would respond. “Sure, you can take the day off. But I want you to at least just play one inning since you’re already in the lineup. After that, you can have the rest of the day off.”

The player would do as Houk requested. But after the first inning, he would almost invariably get caught up in the spirit of the game and play it out until the end!

Often when we’re tired and don’t feel like going to church, praying, or spending time in God’s Word, the enemy can come against us and try to deter us from taking the first step. But if we’ll take that first step, we almost always find the next one is a bit easier.

When you feel worn out, tired, or discouraged, make the effort to take the first step forward. And above all else, trust in Jesus to give you rest and strength for each day. When you do, you may find moving forward is easier than you thought!

Ask God to give you the rest and energy you need to take the next step forward, wherever the enemy is trying to push you back.( Senior Living)

THE HUNT FOR HAPPINESS

August 21, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought  under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation  of  spirit.”–Ecc. 2:17

While most people are hunting for happiness, some have given up the hunt. Sadly, some give up on life altogether and a few chose to end it. More than a few suppose that the world is so wicked and the road is so rough that it is useless to even hope for happiness. They have come to believe that regardless of how hard they try it will always be beyond their reach. They are given to gloom, chronic complainers, miserable murmurers, forever finding fault with things. They are a curse to their companions and troublesome to themselves. If they can’t have more, bigger, and better they figure “what’s the use?”. To make matters worse, they get bitter about it. They feel they deserve what they desire and should not be deprived of it. And woe unto the person who they feel is standing in their way. Even God does not escape their wrath in some cases. They feel He is unfairly withholding what they want. Their bitter anger is manifested in numerous ways and directed toward many different people. They wonder, “Doesn’t God want me to be happy?” Yes He does, but He wants you to find your happiness in Him. It is not until we turn to the Lord and seek to please Him that we find true happiness in life.

It would be a great day if folks discovered that true and lasting happiness can be had in Christ.God’s promises and the light of His Word brings hope to the heart, regardless of the circumstances. Rather than giving up, we should accept responsibility for our unhappiness and press onward in the pursuit of God’s will for our life. It is in seeking His glory that we find our greatest gratification. There is no pleasure that equals that of knowing we have pleased God. That’s where you will find happiness.
