BEING LIKE JESUS

February 17, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”–Ephesians 4:21–24

The great pioneer missionary Adoniram Judson suffered enormous hardship and loss during more than thirty years of faithful service in Burma (modern day Myanmar). He buried two wives and numerous children. He was persecuted, imprisoned, and tortured. He labored for more than six years before seeing his first convert. It took him years to translate the Bible into the very difficult Burmese language. Yet Judson did not consider himself to have reached a high level in the Christian life. When someone compared him to the Apostle Paul Judson responded, “I do not want to be like a Paul…or any mere man. I want to be like Christ. I want to follow Him only, copy His teachings, drink in His Spirit, and place my feet in His footprints. Oh, to be more like Christ!”

The world does not need better educated and trained Christians. The world does not need Christians who fit in better and don’t make waves with their beliefs. What it needs is Christians who are less like the world and more like Jesus. The sacrificial life of Christ is the pattern we are meant to follow. “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps” (1 Peter 2:21). He is the standard by which we will be measured and evaluated for our service, and He is the example that we are meant to emulate. The more that we focus our efforts on following His steps, the more powerful and effective our lives will be.(Daily in the Word)

PRAISE THE LORD

February 17, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the Lord’s name is to be praised“– Psalm 113:3

No matter where you come from, where you live, or where your life may take you, your purpose is the same — to praise the Lord in all you do, say, and think. From the place of the sunrise, to the horizon where it sets, God is worthy of adoration.

And he deserves our honor no matter the time of day or night. When we are commuting to work in the morning, changing diapers during the day, or doing homework at night we are to do all to the glory of our Savior. May never a day pass that we have not done something to consciously advance the fame of Jesus Christ.

But his name is also to be praised at every stage of life. If you are young and energetic, in the “morning” of your life, God is due your obedience and worship. If you are nearing the sunset of your life, then you have an increasingly powerful witness, as God more and more shows his strength in your weakness.

There is no place, no time, no stage in life in which our great concern should not be to bring glory to our Maker and Savior. Will you praise him right now, right here, in this time of your life and in the place that God has uniquely positioned you for his glory? —A Good Thing

LOVE

February 14, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.”—1 Cor. 13:13

Love is the greatest of all graces, for it is that which makes the rest of the graces graceful; yea, may we not say, every other grace is an expression of love.
What is mercy, but love compassionating the guilty?
What is kindness, but love ministering to the needy?
What is pity, but love’s thoughtfulness for the suffering?
What is faith, but love’s confidence in the Saviour?
What is hope, but love’s expectation of her Lord?
What is courage, but love’s fortitude in conflict?
What is righteousness, but love’s conformity to GOD’s law?
What is holiness, but love’s imitation of the Divine?
What is joy, but love’s exultation in the Saviour?
What is peace, but love’s repose in the Redeemer?
What is patience, but love’s endurance in the race?
What is meekness, but love’s unselfishness, in giving way to others?
What is prayer, but love’s supplication for the aid of the Almighty?
What is worship, but love’s offering of praise?
What is penitence, but love bewailing her short-comings?
What is justice, but love paying her dues?
What is beneficence, but love distributing her bounties?
What is faithfulness, but love’s fidelity in performing her promises?
What is zeal, but love’s ardor in fulfilling her trust?
What is testimony, but love telling out the glory of the Gospel?
What is fruit, but love’s life manifesting itself?
What is work, but love’s employment in serving the Lord?
So might every trait of Christian life and labour be summarized.
– Love is the backbone of truth,
– Love is the lever of grace,
– Love is the heart of the Gospel,
– Love is the summary of Christianity,
– Love is the motor of true service,
– Love is the meaning of the Cross, and
– Love is the nature of GOD;

therefore, it must have the pre-eminent place, and be like the Beloved, the chiefest among ten thousand, and the altogether lovely.
–F. E. Marsh

BLESS THE LORD

February 13, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.” — Ps 34:1

It is not hard to bless the Lord at some times. There are days when all is bright. There is no sickness in our house. No recent sorrow has left our heart sad. It is easy then to bless the Lord.

But there are other times when things are different. Business is not prosperous. Or, health is broken. We begin to say this verse, but we cannot get through it. “I will bless the Lord at _____.”

We cannot bless the Lord for the broken health, for the empty chair. Yet there the words stand. We cannot make them read: “I will bless the Lord at some times: His praise shall be in my mouth on certain days – days when the sun shines.”

It is not our business to write Bible verses; it is our business rather to bring our lives up to the standard of the inspired words. So we must learn to say the verse just as it is written.

We must learn to bless the Lord on the dark days as well as the bright days. We must learn to praise God in pain as well as in pleasure. (J. R.Miller)

A SURE SUPPLY

February 13, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“…lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.”– Luke 22:35

The Lord will always provide for His own people, who keep His company, do His will, and aim at His glory. If He sends us, though He chooses to carry the purse, our bread shall be given, and our water shall be sure.

The disciples went out unfurnished, but then Jesus commanded them; they return, and confessed that they lacked nothing, the God of providence supplied them. If we are in the Lord’s way, we may rest assured that we shall meet the Lord’s messengers bringing our supply. They that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing. He notices our wants, remembers His promises, times His mercies, and proves Himself a faithful God.

Have you lacked anything? for body? for soul? He Who has supplied the past, will provide for the future. Jesus is full of grace; go, and receive, that your joy may be full. Jesus is the God of providence; look to Him, trust in Him, plead with Him, and you shall never be destitute.

Believe His word, He cannot deny Himself; trust in His faithfulness, and He will put honour upon thy faith, fulfilling His own word. “Thy bread shall be given thee, and thy water shall be sure.” (James Smith, 1840)

His love in times past, Forbids me to think
He’ll leave me at last, In trouble to sink;
Each sweet Ebenezer I have in review
Confirms His good pleasure To help me quite through.
