CLEANSING THE HEART

“Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word.” ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭119‬:‭9‬ ‭

The question is revealing. Notice the psalmist doesn’t say, “Why should a young man cleanse his way?” Neither does he ask, “Should a young man cleanse his way?”

He has already moved past the point that so many young people struggle with, which is to question authority and wonder why mental, emotional, and physical purity is so important. He knows that he is sinful and foolish before a holy God. He is not questioning the need to cleanse his way, but is now pursuing the best means to accomplish this.

And how is it to be done? By taking heed to—by internalizing and personalizing—the Word of God. On one hand this may be disappointing, if you hoped for a more entertaining, less demanding solution. Nothing less than an unblinking gaze into the mirror of God’s Word will show you the genuine flaws in your character and mindset.

On the other hand, it is greatly encouraging. The solution you seek for is readily available! You do not have to climb to the top of a mountain in Tibet, or have a certain social or religious pedigree, or attain some academic status in order to know and understand how to purify your life and please God.– Baptist Bible Hour

SEEING THE UNSEEN
“While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”–2 Cor. 4:18

This is something we all too often forget. Everything you see is temporal. The things of earth are passing away, they will perish, but the things of eternity are permanent. Still, the average person has a strong attraction for and attachment to the things that are seen, although they cannot take those things with them when they die. They spend their time, money, and energy in pursuit of things that will not endure. Is that not foolish?

The wise man does just the opposite. He is focused on that which can’t be seen with the natural eye. He is concerned about things that matter rather than matter. He is busy investing His life in things that pay eternal dividends, rather than things that end in disappointment. He lays up treasure in heaven, as the Master tells us to do (Matt. 6:19-21).

Naturally the world thinks we are fools and laughs at us–but we will have the last laugh. It appears to them that we are depriving ourselves of pleasure, subjecting ourselves to needless hardships, and wasting our lives. But they are the fools. Lacking faith, they cannot see beyond that which is seen, so they set their sights on what they see–things that pass away. What a waste!

Those who know the Lord know better. They know that when the great fountains of the deep break-up, and the mountains crumble and fall, and the earth is stripped of its goods, they have a home and treasures in heaven that cannot pass away. By faith we see that the unseen things are the only things that shall endure–they are eternal. And that gives us something worth living for. What we do here makes a difference in eternity. Focus on ministry rather than material things. Life is a precious gift–don’t waste it!-HDS, 4-9-15

A MERRY HEART

What the Word of God says is much more important than what we say about the Word of God–we, especially preachers, need to remember that! An old devotional book called, “Daily Light on the Daily Path” uses only quotations from the Bible to drive home glorious truths for each day. The following is an example:

“He that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast.

The joy of the LORD is your strength. — The kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. — Be filled with the Spirit; speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

By him … let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. — Sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing.” — We glory in tribulations also.”

Proverbs 15:15;  Nehemiah 8:10;  Romans 14:17;  Ephesians 5:18 20; Heb.13:15; Habakkuk 3:17,18;  2 Corinthians 6:10;  Romans 5:3;

Dear friend, you can read every bestselling book written by man, but if you are not feeding your soul on a daily diet of God’s Word you are starving yourself spiritually and stunting your growth. You are literally putting yourself in danger. Don’t do it!- HDS

A PREPARED PLACE FOR PREPARED PEOPLE

“But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.”Hebrews‬ ‭11‬:‭16‬ ‭

“Here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come!” Heb.13:14

“Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city!” Rev.22:14

God has prepared a city for His redeemed people. Towards that city we are ever journeying. And as we are but sojourners, as our citizenship is in Heaven—let us manifest the pilgrim spirit. While we thankfully use and enjoy the accommodations along the way, let it plainly appear that we do not regard this transient world as our home—but that our affections are set supremely on things which are above. Let it be manifest that we act from higher principles than those which govern the men of this poor world. May our companions, our pleasures, and our spirit plainly show that we are not of the earth—but that we are citizens of the heavenly Jerusalem.

As sojourners, let us patiently endure the trials of the way. If we are faithful witnesses for the Lord—we must expect the world’s scorn. But like Moses, may we esteem reproach for Christ as greater riches than the treasures of Egypt. And when we find the path thorny, and the journey toilsome—let us remember that it is short, and that,

“Nightly we pitch our moving tent
 A day’s march nearer home!”

“Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims—abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul!” 1 Pet.2:11

DON’T BE DECEIVED

” Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” Colossians 2:8

Having been grieved at the sight of seeing so many people misled by others I took a special interest in this story from Senior Living:

While enjoying a transatlantic ocean trip, a famous Hollywood actress noticed a gentleman sitting at the next table suffering from a bad cold. So she looked over at him and asked, “Sir, are you uncomfortable?”

The man looked back at her and gave a nod.

“I’ll tell you just what to do for that cold,” she said. “Go back to your room, drink lots of orange juice, and take two aspirin. Then cover yourself with every blanket you can find and sweat the cold out. I know what I’m talking about. I’m an actress.”

The man smiled warmly and said, “Thank you. But I’m a doctor.”

These days, it seems everyone considers themselves experts even if they’ve only read an article or seen something online about a particular subject. And while the recent information explosion we’ve seen around the world has its benefits, one drawback is that there’s so much misinformation out there, it’s hard to know whom to trust.

This is especially true when it comes to biblical teaching, as many of the so-called “preachers” and “theologians” today have gained a platform by teaching things that run counter to biblical doctrine. So be careful of letting charisma and charm determine what teaching you accept. Make sure you’re putting yourself under solid, biblical teaching and you’ll grow rock-solid in your faith!

Ask God to guide you to the right teachers and to give you discernment to recognize when you’re hearing false teachings.- HDS, 4-28-15
