CONFESSING OUR SINS

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness”. —1 John 1:9

Confession of sin can be very very difficult–especially when you have a reputation to uphold, or an office to maintain, or a marriage to save, or a job to keep, or money to lose, etc. It is usually the last thing we want to do.

People are eaten up with envy, jaded with jealousy, blighted with bitterness, consumed with covetousness, frozen by fear, polluted by pride, afflicted by appetite, etc., yet they would never admit it. Although it’s obvious to others, ruining relationships, corrupting their character, hurting their happiness, and souring their spirit, they refuse to to repent.

It would be so simple and it is so serious and there is so much at stake that you would think everyone would do it, but few do. Instead, they use every excuse imaginable to keep from dealing with it and blame everyone possible for it. They imagine that it wouldn’t make anything better, or that people won’t forgive, or that they won’t be able to stop, or that they have plenty of time, or that someone else should take the first step. It’s a fool’s game, but they play it without fear.
There is so much at stake that we ought to confess our sins as quickly as possible, as sincerely as we can, and as completely as is necessary. We ought to do it without hesitation, reservation, argument, or question. Why would you wait? How long will you wait? What might you lose while you wait? All the while, as you entertain sin in your life you deprive yourself of blessings. Whatever the price you must pay by confessing your sins it is not as much as the cost of not doing so. No one sins successfully.

We ought to be forever thankful that forgiveness is possible. We don’t deserve the least of God’s favor, yet he forgives and restores. He does so only because of the sacrifice of Christ, His own dear Son. Once we have established a relationship with God by trusting Christ as our Savior, we ought to maintain our fellowship with God by confessing our sins–all of them, right now! Doing so will bring peace into your heart and blessing into your life. Make this day a turning point in your life by confessing every known sin.- HDS, 4-2-11

AN IMPORTANT QUESTION
“—-Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”- Genesis 18:25

This is a question that relates to many varied experiences that men go through. There are miseries that seen too heavy to bear and mysteries that are far to hard for us to solve. Numerous things in life seem unfair and unprofitable, and we wonder why and how a loving God would force them on us.

This is a question that should be easy to answer. Since God is righteous, perfect in every way, He cannot but do that which is right. We might not understand it, but we can rest assured that God will never do wrong.

This is a question that implies great truth about God. He is a judge, the Judge,” the Judge of all the earth”! He is not some local deity conjured up in the mind of puny man, nor one of the many gods of this wicked world. He is “the Judge of all the earth”—the One to whom we all are accountable!

This is a question we should remember. Things will happen that will rock your world, cloud your mind, break your heart, and depress your spirit—things you cannot comprehend, change or control. Things happen that prompt us to ask “Why?”, “Why this?”, “Why me?”, “Why now?”. We all experience things that cause pressure to mount–sometimes to the point that we even question God. It’s then that we are in desperate need of remembering who He is—“the Judge of all the earth”. So, who are we to question Him? He has all authority–shall we challenge Him? He has infinite wisdom–should we question Him? He is perfectly holy–dare we accuse Him of being wrong or unfair? He rules “all the earth”–should He not rule over us? He is “the Judge of all the earth”–shall we judge Him?

We have misjudged Him many times before, shall we do it again? Will we never learn? Do not be led astray by your feelings. Simply trust God to do as He has promised. He will never fail you. As someone said,”Wait, till the last chapter is written. God hasn’t made His first mistake. When we are able to see things from a clearer perspective, we will realize that the Judge of all the earth has done right”.–HDS, 4-12-13

John Oxenham wrote:
“God writes in characters too grand
For our short sight to understand;
We catch but broken strokes, and try
To fathom all the mystery
Of withered hopes, of death, of life,
The endless war, the useless strife,–
But there, with larger, clearer sight,
We shall see this–His way was right.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF CHRIST?
“What think ye of Christ?”– Matt.22:42

An unknown author wrote,”I am ashamed of my thoughts of Him—they are so poor, and so unworthy of Him. He is so great, and so glorious, and so good, and so gracious—that I cannot think of Him as I desire to.

Do you inquire what I think of His person? He is the chief among ten thousand, and the altogether lovely One! He unites in Himself Deity and Manhood—
“All human beauties—all Divine,
In my Beloved meet and shine!”

Do you ask what I think of His work? It is perfect! His obedience is spotless! His atonement is complete! His work of redemption is accomplished, “It is Finished!”

Do you ask what I think of His love? Ah, here it is that I am most at fault—and no wonder, for His love surpasses knowledge! Its height and depth, its length and its breadth—are immeasurable! His love is free, unchanging, and eternal. It is unparalleled—it is Dying love! He loved me—and gave Himself for me! Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends—but Jesus laid down His life for His enemies!”

Is it any wonder that Paul’s prayer for the church at Ephesus was that they might “know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.” ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭3‬:‭19‬. It would do us all good to stop and reflect on the greatness God’s love for us, remembering that it was “while we were yet sinners”. ‭-HDS

TONGUE TROUBLE

“The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself”.–Ecc. 10:12

Did you hear about the woman who was arrested for causing an accident while talking on her cell phone? She was given a ticket for DWI—driving while intalksicated! OK, I’ll admit it, that’s corny! But, here’s something that’s not so funny–we often cause a lot of problems and hurt a lot of people by the words we speak.

Remember the old saying,”Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me!”? Well, that’s a lie. Words can hurt us deeply. Far too often we say things that hurt others, and ultimately hurts us. And, God holds us accountable for our thoughts, words and actions. We best be careful. That being the case, we need to think before we speak. We need to consider the truthfulness of what we say, the thought that prompted it, the tone of our voice, and the trouble it might cause.

Our Christian testimony is at stake.  The Bible says,”Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.”(Col. 4:6). It would do you good to spend much time studying this verse and others directly related to it, wringing out every drop of truth possible, considering the meaning of every word, and prayerfully examining your life in its light. Notice the word “alway”–it means exactly what it says, whether in private or public, whether at work or at play, whether with friend or foe. It speaks of our manner of life regardless of circumstances. O what a difference it would make in our lives, and that of others, if we would just practice this one simple command. Sadly too many of us get out of control and say things we shouldn’t, doing irreparable damage. We hurt others, lose their respect, destroy our testimony, and invite God to take corrective measures.

Solomon said,”A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.”(Proverbs 25:11). In other words it is something beautiful, as opposed to the ugliness of improper speech. If you want to make a lasting good impression,”Let your speech be always with grace–“. You will be remembered for the right reason.-HDS, 2-26-11

ESCAPE FROM EMPTINESS
“And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour. Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.”‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭2‬:‭10‬-‭11‬

‭
Man, apart from God, is a miserable creature. Search as he may, and he does, he cannot find the fulfillment he longs for. Like the troubled sea, he cannot rest. I know–it seems that some have found the pot of gold at rainbow’s end, but things are not what they seem to be. Don’t be fooled by all the glitz and glamor of those who live the life style of the rich and famous. They are no closer to finding peace and contentment than the bum on the street. Regardless of their outward appearance there is something missing and, whether they admit it or not, they know it. They are always discontent. The more they get the more they want, and the more apparent it becomes that “all is vanity”. They know that something, something more important than anything else, is missing.

Christians know that that “something” is actually “Someone”–Christ! They have drank from the Fountain of Living Water and they thirst no more. They have eaten the Bread of Life and they hunger no more. They have discovered that contentment is found only in Christ. Their Savior satisfies! Although they have their “ups and downs” like everyone else, they know their Foundation is sure and they are at peace–even when the storms are raging.

What about you? When you’ve run your mad race throughout the day, searching for satisfaction, and finally put your head on the pillow at night, just how satisfied are you? How do you feel? Do you have a calm sense of peace that makes life an enjoyable experience? Or do you feel restless, as though there is no rhyme or reason in life? Are you sick and tired of not having a sense of purpose? Are you bored with going through the same old same old everyday, as though there is nothing better?

Well there is good news. When life is not as it should be, the first step toward a better life is getting dissatisfied with life as it is. Until we acknowledge the problem we can’t solve the problem. If you are fed up with your life as it is, run to Him who is seeking you. Open the door of your heart and give Him entrance while He is knocking. Receive Him and you will be received into God’s family as a joint-heir of Christ! Live for Him who died for you, lest you waste your opportunity. Give your life away and you will find it. Instead of feeling empty you will have life more abundant, full and free. – HDS (2-1-12)
