OUR NATIONAL NEED

February 24, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

Did you read this article, called the quote of the decade?

This quote was translated into English from an article appearing in the

Czech Republic as published in the Prager Zeitung of 28 April 2011.

“The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of

entrusting an inexperienced man like him with the Presidency. It will be far

easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore

the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate

willing to have such a man for their president.. The problem is much deeper

and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails

America. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast

confederacy of fools that made him their prince.. The Republic can survive

a Barack Obama. It is less likely to survive a multitude of Idiots such as

those who made him their president.”

Sadly many never see the true nature of our problem, and certainly don’t see themselves as part of the problem–it’s easier to blame Obama, or as in his case, blame Bush! This next article should be read and digested by every American–it should cause us to repent and throw ourselves on the mercy of God.

America’s Best Fuel: ‘A Moral and Religious People’

By George Scagges

It’s amazing just how complicated everything has become in America. We find ourselves divided, confused, and distracted.  We are obsessed with personalities rather than ideas and focused on symptoms rather than the disease they stem from.

Clearly, a fresh perspective is in order.  For all those commonsense Americans devoting their time and resources to searching for an effective means to contribute, some way to make a difference, let’s cut to the chase, shall we?  Let’s start with identifying the root of our problem.

“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” -John Adams

How incredibly succinct.  In two sentences, Mr. Adams managed to sum up America’s proper operating instructions.

Though the matter could not be more clear, over time, this simple proclamation of truth has obviously come to be regarded as nothing more than opinion, rendering an absolute as something that is negotiable, if not infinitely flexible.

Unfortunately, as it generally goes with absolutes, they are anything but flexible.  Sure, we can choose to ignore them, or simply twist them to mean whatever may happen to suit us at the moment, but we do so at our own peril.

So why does our system seem broken — why does our government no longer work on our behalf?  Adams’s simple equation provides the answer.

Our postmodern society would do well to view Adams’s brilliant insight as a big red warning label affixed to the nation’s founding documents.  Just as with those ubiquitous labels found on any product imaginable — “Do not stand on top rung”; “Do not use hair dryer while sitting in water” — Adams is pointing out what is painfully obvious.

“Do not use this to govern any but a moral and religious people!”  Otherwise, not only does the system not operate properly, but to operate it at all is downright dangerous!

America is overlooking the obvious.  We might as well use water in our car’s gasoline tank and then stand around scratching our heads when the car doesn’t run okay.

Actually, that corresponds nicely with a similar metaphor: as the nation has slowly abandoned morality, we have effectively modified her fuel.  Sure, America’s engine may run on something other than what was specifically designed for it, but not at peak performance.  Increasingly, as we deviate farther from the ideal mixture (a moral and religious people) to run this type of engine, the engine works less efficiently and wears faster.  Eventually, the car no longer runs as it should and becomes completely unreliable.

As America’s performance increasingly declines, in a state of growing confusion and frustration, Adams’s simple axiom beckons.  If only we would refer to the owner’s manual to ensure that we haven’t overlooked anything.

As it is, we obsess over selecting a new driver every few years, convinced that this will deliver the results we’re after.  Indeed, we have grown so desperate for solutions that we now spend  40% of our time consumed with the presidential election cycle.

With each new driver, the hope of a seemingly fresh approach placates us temporarily, but the vehicle’s performance never fulfills our expectations.  It still seems sluggish, and eventually we come to realize that the new driver is incapable of tweaking the performance any better than his predecessor could.

Try as we might, something just isn’t right.

While considerable debate seems to focus on whether or not America still constitutes a majority of “moral and religious people,” the matter is somewhat irrelevant.  What is inarguable is that today’s society includes a significant portion of citizens who want nothing to do with anyone’s idea of morality or religion.

In fact, a rather vocal and antagonistic subculture has surfaced, so prolific that its purveyors do quite well for themselves by mocking and demonizing anything remotely smacking of “moral” or “religious.”  Bill Maher provides a stellar example.

Let’s not forget: our government is one built strictly upon the concept of compromise, and therein lies the rub.  For today, perhaps Americans no longer have enough morality in common, nor philosophy for that matter.  Never mind national interest, particularly considering all the dissenting non-Americans running about.  Yes, we have given them a de facto seat at the table, too.

Adams affirms the source of our angst. We have a choice: continue to ignore the proverbial elephant in the room, or realistically discuss our options in dealing with it.

HOUSEHOLD ENEMIES

February 1, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

Jesus said that sometimes our enemies are members of our own household. In some parts of the world that’s very obvious. Parents literally disown their children when they become Christians. That’s hard to imagine, but it is true and it just goes to show what a firm grip religion can get on a person. However, although that is painful, there is something that can be worse. These are not the most dangerous enemies. The worst enemies are not those who simply oppose you, but those who deceive you, causing you to believe a lie, or discourage you from doing what you should.

While Christians have always been persecuted by the world in general, for many people their greatest threat and worst enemy is a member of their own family. Making matters worse, they don’t even know it. If you told them they wouldn’t believe you. Some would be greatly angered by your charge. They don’t want to believe that someone they love so dearly would ever lead them astray. That’s natural, but the fact is they will, and the facts need to be faced. Some of Satan’s most effective tools are relatives who misguide others.

Believe it or not, some of the worst offenders are parents. Not just those who withhold the truth from their children by never taking them to church, but also those who feed them misinformation. Although, perhaps, well-meaning they convince their children to believe a lie. In many instances they are highly critical of churches and preachers–leaving the impression that only their advice can be trusted.

Now I certainly believe that children, of any age, should respect their parents, but that doesn’t mean that you should believe everything they say. The Bible tell us to love our enemies, but that doesn’t mean that we should allow them to lure us into evil. Nor does it mean that we must sever all ties with them. We simply must not let them lead us down the wrong path. At this very moment there are those who are out of church (I could name names!) simply because a parent wouldn’t keep their mouth shut. They would not give up until they finally imposed their opinions on them. Little by little they spread their poison until their child was finally infected by it. They kept at it until they dragged them down to their level.

Isn’t it amazing that, to prove a point or to win an argument some people are willing to destroy the lives of others, even their own children. Some make an issue out of something petty and then act as though they alone are the final authority on the matter. I pity people like that, but not nearly as much as I pity the poor children who are exposed to and influenced by such a poor example.

Every person needs to learn to think for themselves and, most of all, become a student of God’s word. Never believe anything just because someone, anyone, else tells you it is so and never doubt anything the Bible says–it is our only sure source of information. Those who follow the truth will always be on the right track. So where are you? How did you get there? THINK ABOUT IT!

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO?

January 30, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

Talk about a sure-fire conversation starter this is it–just ask “What would you like to do?”. Try that in a room full of people and you would get a wide variety of answers. So, what would you like to do? Go fishing? Go shopping? Take a vacation? What comes to your mind?
Personally, I could mention a lot of things and I’m not sure what order I would put them in, but something just came to my mind that I had never really thought about before. I would love to spend 1-1/2 to 2 hours every morning teaching the Psalms. Yep, I know that seems strange to some of you, but you asked (in a round about way) and that’s my answer.
The older I get the more I appreciate and enjoy the Psalms. I once spent five years teaching the entire book of Psalms on Wednesday nights. I would love to study this marvellous book in an unhurried manner every morning. It is so rich and wonderful that it would provide much needed help for all of us. Few people read it as they should and fewer still actually study it. They don’t know what they’re missing.

I realize that we can’t all get together for such a study every day, but we all could spend some time every day studying the Psalms on our own.I am not talking about reading it, although that is fine, I’m talking about really studying each of the Psalms. My purpose for this article is to provoke thought that just might lead to someone discovering what a priceless treasure we have in this blessed book. Give it a try and let me know what you think. Who knows, even though you might not desire to teach it, studying the Psalms daily just might make someone’s top ten list. It sure made mine. Think about it!

PAM’S STORY

January 21, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

Since this is “Sanctity of Life” weekend I thought this story, copied from Dr. Bob Griffin, is very fitting for the occasion:

I read about a woman named Pam, who knows the pain of considering abortion.
More than 24 years ago, she and her husband Bob were serving as missionaries
to the Philippines and praying for a fifth child. Pam contracted amoebic
dysentery, an infection of the intestine caused by a parasite found in
contaminated food or drink. She went into a coma and was treated with strong
antibiotics before they discovered she was pregnant.

Doctors urged her to abort the baby for her own safety and told her that the
medicines had caused irreversible damage to her baby. She refused the
abortion and cited her Christian faith as the reason for her hope that her
son would be born without the devastating disabilities physicians predicted.
Pam said the doctors didn’t think of it as a life, they thought of it as a
mass of fetal tissue.

While pregnant, Pam nearly lost their baby four times but refused to
consider abortion. She recalled making a pledge to God with her husband: “If
you will give us a son, we’ll name him Timothy and we’ll make him a
preacher.”

Pam ultimately spent the last two months of her pregnancy in bed and
eventually gave birth to a healthy baby boy August 14, 1987. Pam’s youngest
son is indeed a preacher. He preaches in prisons, makes hospital visits, and
serves with his father’s ministry in the Philippines. He also plays
football. We here in the Mountain West are pleased with the Denver Bronco
quarterback, Tim Tebow.

The University of Florida’s star quarterback became the first sophomore in
history to win college football’s highest award, the Heisman Trophy. His
current role as quarterback of the Denver Broncos has provided an incredible
platform for Christian witness.

Tim’s fame and Pam’s inspiring story have given her numerous opportunities
to speak on behalf of women’s centers across the country. Pam Tebow believes
that every little baby you save matters. I pray her tribe will increase!

THE COWARD’S CASTLE

January 20, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

In yesterday’s Morning Manna I mentioned the fact that I do not prepare sermons to address the needs or problems of specific individuals. As every preacher has experienced, sometimes people will say, “You were preaching directly to me”, and we know what they mean and that’s great. But occasionally someone will actually accuse us of attacking them personally. Most preachers are not guilty of that, but sometimes it does happen. I can’t honestly say I have never been guilty, but that was many years ago and very foolish on my part. Although far from perfect, that’s something I refuse to do.

So, it was with this in mind that I just happened to run across a brief statement made by J. C. Philpot many years ago. It served as a good reminder for me. Perhaps it will be of help to someone else. Philpot wrote:

A pastor has no right to turn the pulpit into a
coward’s castle, and from there attack those
in the congregation, whom he is afraid to meet
face to face privately.

It is cruelly unfair to attack an individual who
cannot defend himself—to hold him up, as if on
the horns of the pulpit, before the congregation,
(who generally know pretty well who is meant),
and to condemn him without hearing his side,
with the pastor being the only judge and jury.

Now, while I agree with this, I feel compelled to say a few words in defense of pastors–perhaps the most misunderstood people on earth. Things are not always as they appear. Just because the pastor’s sermon hits you right between the eyes it doesn’t mean you are his target. Guilt will make you feel that way. Before you criticize him try confessing your sins. In extreme cases, such as church discipline, it might be necessary for the pastor to address issues in your life. Again, if that’s the case, confession is the solution.

However, in some instances, I think very few, pastors are guilty of using the pulpit as a whipping post for certain individuals. He might even speak out of anger rather than love. He might be totally wrong. So, how do you handle a case like that?

First of all, try to put yourself in his shoes. Although it is impossible for you to understand the pressure he is under you can at least try to be understanding. He is only human, with the same kind of feelings and emotions as everyone else. In his position it is easy to be disappointed and get discouraged. He is not above acting out of character once in a while. Don’t we all? Besides, he has the welfare of the whole church on his heart. When he feels someone is a threat to the church–its testimony or ministry, he gets concerned–sometimes overly so.

Whatever the case might be, the first thing you should do is pray for him. If you aren’t praying for him what makes you think you have the right to criticize him? Secondly, refuse to speak evil of him to others. His failure doesn’t give you the freedom to gossip. Third, in some cases, when his guilt is evident and you’ve tried everything else to resolve the problem, it might be best to meet with him and discuss, in a civil manner, your concerns. You might be surprised by what a good heart to heart talk can accomplish. If you’re still not satisfied, keep praying and leave the matter to God. He knows how to correct His children, and He doesn’t need your help.
