A GREAT TEACHER

History is a great teacher. Today is a good example. It was the morning of December 7,1941 that the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, resulting in the deaths of nearly 2,500. This was a shock to our nation and as President Franklin Roosevelt said, “a date which will live in infamy.”
Many volumes have been written about this awful tragedy providing much material for thought and discussion. But, to me, the one thing that stands out is this–warnings are important. As Dr. Paul Chappell put it–“The day of infamy should be our reminder to always heed warning.”
I’m not a historian and I’m not going to deal with specific examples, but I will remind you that much has been written about warnings of the attack, yet no one took heed. You could say this serves as a commentary on the history of man. Going all the way back to the Garden of Eden we see examples of man ignoring God’s warnings, and the results are not a pretty picture.
As I think about this I am reminded of Jeremiah 6:10,”To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of the LORD is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it.” The result of this was many long years of bondage and the loss of many lives, all because Israel refused to heed God’s warnings. Now, many years later, we are traveling down the same perilous path enroute to destruction and few seem to know or care.
Much more could be said about this in regards to our nation, but I want to make this personal. As Christians we have an enemy who is intent on destroying us. Satan isn’t playing games. His plan is to deceive and destroy as many people as possible, and the Bible warns us repeatedly. The sad thing is that few people listen and take heed to what God says. Instead of obeying His commands and heeding His warnings they plunge head-long into the cess-pool of sin.That robs them of God’s blessings and ruins their lives. It doesn’t make sense and it doesn’t have to be that way, yet in spite of the many examples we keep repeating history. Like the prodigal son, folks think they can find satisfaction apart from God. The wise return, the fools refuse. The results of both are predictable–a blessing or a curse. The choice is yours.
Some of you reading this are living in rebellion against God’s will and you know it, as do others. Love ones have tried to warn you and Bible verses come to your mind that condemns you, but you turn a deaf ear to the warnings. God has been gentle, patient, and kind–nothing bad has happened so far, but please don’t presume on God’s mercy. We reap what we sow and harvest day is sure. It’s just a matter of time before you cross the boundary between God’s mercy and His wrath. Don’t ignore the warnings. Think about it!

STUFFED

“You’ve got to be kidding!”–That was my response to a headline that said,”Calculate Your Calories This Thanksgiving”. The writer was dead serious about this and had prepared a table showing the caloric consumption for several of our favorite Thanksgiving foods.
It’s bad enough that we have to put up with “Scrooge” at Christmas, we don’t need Calorie Counters at Thanksgiving! We could describe Thanksgiving in a lot of ways, such as the fellow who said it’s when the stuffing is moved from one turkey to another! That, of course, is another way of saying that it’s all about the food. I agree–it shouldn’t be that way, but we’re trying to be honest. Right?
Speaking of “stuffing”, did you know that it has quite a history behind it? I recently ran across this informative article by David Jeremiah:
The oldest references to stuffing are in ancient Roman cookbooks that talk about vegetables, herbs, spices, and cereal being combined and “stuffed” into chicken, rabbits, and pigs. Romans also added liver and brains to their stuffing. Stuffing has appeared in cookbooks ever since and was quite popular at Medieval banquets. The sensibilities of the Victorians resisted the word “stuffing,” substituting the more delicate word “dressing,” a term that caught on in the Southern United States.

The word “stuff” means to cram full. For example, after we’ve had our fill of turkey, beans, potatoes, rolls, cranberry sauce (and stuffing), we’ll lean back in our chairs and say, “I’m stuffed.”

 
Now, you can do with that what you will, but I’m convinced that some folks are too “spiritual” for their own good. They make themselves and everyone around them miserable. Here’s my advice, for what it’s worth,—enjoy the day! You are not a glutton just because you “stuff” yourself on appropriate occasions. Read your Bible–God taught His people to feast on occasion. So, He not only allows it, He expects it. Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems to me that it can be an expression of gratitude to relish what God has graciouly provided. After all, how would the cook feel if you just picked at your food, consuming only a few bites? From my experience, it is far more likely to bring a smile, rather than a frown, to her face when you ask for a second helping. Don’t make yourself sick, but don’t let some stick-in -the-mud rob you of your joy. Remember that “the living God—giveth us richly all things to enjoy”.(1 Timothy 6:17). So, help yourself.
In these troubled times we’ve got more than enough things to make us sad without counting calories at Thanksgiving. Forget that nonsense–loosen your belt and get another piece of pie. Make the experience something the kids will enjoy and remember. From my heart to your house, Happy Thanksgiving! –Bro. Stone

THE FUNDAMENTALS

I just happened to notice the headline of an article pertaining to the Dallas Cowboys. Calm down–this isn’t about how I feel about the Cowboys, LOL. I just want to make a point. The headline said,”Phillips preaching fundamentalism”.
Having played sports and being somewhat of a fan (depending on who is playing), I understand how important fundamentals are. You simply can’t ignore them and be successful. Raw talent might make you look good on occasion, but that alone won’t make you a winner. The fundamentals are essential.
The question is this–considering the many years of training and experience they’ve had, how can it be that a professional athlete who is paid millions have a problem with the fundamentals? You understand poor performance when it is due to an injury or just a plain lack of ability, but forgetting the fundamentals is inexcusable. Those who are truly dedicated to the game don’t need lectures about the fundamentals–that’s where there focus is. The true “stars” are self-motivated, fully dedicated, full-time students of the game. They don’t over look the fundamentals.
Now, let’s make a spiritual application. After all, if Paul could use racing, wrestling, boxing, etc. as examples why can’t we do the same. Just as it is with sports, there are certain fundamentals that must be adhered to. We ignore them at our peril. Take spiritual growth for instance. It doesn’t just happen because you have been born again. In other words, it isn’t automatic. To mature we nourish ourself by feeding on God’s Word, breathe the fresh air of prayer, exercise ourself unto godliness,etc. We also need the benefits of fellowship with other Christians, so faithful church attendance is fundamental to spiritual maturity.
Here’s the bottom-line—a lot of Christians need to get back to “the fundamentals”! Looking good occasionally isn’t good enough. We ought to have a better “won-loss” record than that. That means we must get our focus on the fundamentals and commit ourselves to doing those things that are condusive to spiritual growth. We aren’t playing a game. We’re talking about life and the consequences of our conduct are of eternal siginificance. This means much more than winning the “Super-Bowl” or “World Series”. We’re talking about usefulness on earth and treasures in heaven that can never be taken away from us. Now, that’s something worthy of our attention and total devotion! Get back in the “game” and keep your focus on the fundamentals. At the Judgment Seat of Christ you will be glad you did. Think about it!

WHO IS THE ENEMY?

Over and over again I’ve said,”I never thought I would live to see the day when ——“. Well, now there is something else to add to that list. I never thought I would live to see the day when a president would refer to Americans as “enemies”. That is exactly what President Obama said.
I know emotions run high during elections, but when a president tells his supporters to “punish their enemies” that is way over the line. That is the most offensive thing I’ve ever heard any president say.
Thank God for House Minority Leader John Boehner who rebuked the president, saying, he sees “enemies”–I see “Patriots”. We need more leaders with the guts to stand up for what’s right. There ought to be an outcry across the nation, protesting the actions of the president. How can any God-loving, true blood American remain silent? The fact that so many aren’t troubled by this troubles me–deeply. It’s just another evidence that our nation is in serious trouble.
That tirade by the president reveals his true feelings about those who don’t support him and it expresses a spirit of desperation regarding the election. You can get angry with me for pointing this out if you want, but I don’t know how you could respect me if I didn’t. As far as I’m concerned, this is as serious as it gets. If this wouldn’t prompt you to speak out, what would? So, I have now lived to see the day when the president of my nation has called me his avowed enemy. I can’t help but wonder what will be next.
I am commanded to love my enemies, and by God’s grace I will. But I’m also commanded to stand against those who threaten to destroy our God-given liberties, and by God’s grace I will! What will you do? This is election day–VOTE!

DECLARE YOUR INDEPENDENCE —VOTE

Please keep in mind that this has to do with freedom, not firearms! As election day rapidly approaches you need to give serious thought
to these words of wisdom:

Declare Your Independence When You Vote Freedom First!

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

This month, 234 years ago, our country’s Declaration of Independence made some of the most profound and powerful political statements ever expressed.

Yet today, for the sake of partisan gain, many in the political class are attacking the eternal truths that frame our nation’s founding documents as outdated, even dangerous.

So in honor of Independence Day, let’s revisit some of the ideals at the core of this country’s experiment in self-governance to consider what they mean in 2010 America.

The Declaration of Independence severed the colonies’ dependence upon England, but the idea of individual independence was central to the Founders’ thinking.

Being independent meant you were free to fend for yourself, trusted to exercise your freedoms and allowed to excel or fail as a result of your own decisions without interference.

Yet today, many politicians seem to want to make people less independent and more dependent upon government—for bailouts, buyouts and a variety of preferential treatments—and to provide for every need.

This is the opposite of what the Framers intended. Government should be dependent upon, and subject to—in the words of the Declaration of Independence—”the consent of the governed.”

But when those roles are reversed—when politicians put the people in the position of being dependent upon and beholden to them—our freedoms invariably suffer.

What about the idea that government gets its authority from the people?

George Washington wrote, “The power under the Constitution will always be in the people.” Indeed, our Constitution begins with the words “We the people.”

Thomas Jefferson wrote, “Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves are its only safe depositories.”

Yet today, many politicians are turning their backs on the people.

When politicians say one thing during their campaigns, but do the opposite after they’re elected, that says they don’t care what the people think or want. It’s the same arrogance King George and Parliament expressed for American colonists in the 1700s.

When politicians take away your ability to make your own choices, that says they don’t trust you with the freedom to make your own decisions.

We know better than you how you should live your life, they say. So they try to dictate everything from how you run your business to how much salt you have in your food.

We’ve seen politicians demonstrate all of these vices—elitist arrogance, distrust of freedom and disdain for the people—in the gun debate for decades.

They don’t trust you to own or use a firearm safely or lawfully, so they seek to delay, diminish or deny your Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

To convince you to surrender your freedom, they promise you security. They say you don’t need a gun because the police will always be there to protect you.

But as countless victims of crime through the ages could tell you, the promises of politicians didn’t protect them any more than their own prayers and tears.

Sometimes you can’t count on anyone but yourself. That’s what independence means. In this case, the other side of the coin—being dependent—means being defenseless.

But you’re not defenseless from arrogant politicians.

The sacred beauty and supreme genius of what the Founding Fathers built for us through the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and our Bill of Rights is that we the people will always have the tools and ability to retain control of our country.

This year that ability will be demonstrated with your vote and the vote of every American who wants to be free.

The danger we face is that between 20 and 25 million American gun owners are not registered to vote.

So between now and Election Day, November 2, be like Paul Revere. Sound the alarm to freedom’s faithful.

Spread the word to your family, friends, fellow parishioners, co-workers, neighbors and anyone who will listen.

Then get them to do what their freedom demands: Register to vote today. And on Election Day, Vote Freedom First!

Together, let’s use our votes to restore to our country the purpose, promise and blessings of freedom that attended her birth 234 years ago this month.
