THINK ABOUT IT         5-24-24

THINK ABOUT IT             5-24-24

WHAT HEAVEN MEANS TO ME
After reading an article called “Real Estate in Heaven”, by Charles Spurgeon, my heart was stirred. My first thought was, “Now that’s prime property!”, or to put it in hillbilly slang, which I’m prone to do, “There ain’t nuttin like it!” The fact is, the glory that awaits God’s children is indescribable. There is nothing that compares to it.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of a better way to start the day than that. It was just what I needed, and I doubt that I’m alone. The prospect of heaven affects our outlook concerning our present problems. The older I get and the more I think about heaven the less excited I become concerning the things of this world. I can remember a time when it really mattered to me who won the World Series, etc., etc., but now it makes no difference at all. In fact it sickens me to think about all the money and attention athletes and entertainers get. Our soldiers get their guts blown out on a foreign battlefield for the sake of freedom and get no respect, while some immoral athlete or entertainer is worshiped by his or her fans. Even professing Christians are more enthused about the things of this world than they are about eternal matters. What a shame! O how foolish!

The truth is, when we are truly concerned about heaven and eternity it will show itself in the way we conduct ourselves every day and every way. Instead of getting all excited about the ways of the world, we need to think more about the next. Unless it is of eternal value it is of no earthly good. Such things are not only of no eternal value they are actually harmful in that they distract us from the things that are truly important. Let us live each day in the sunshine of God’s promises concerning the glory to come. Believe me–it will make a difference in what you do. Well, enough said—I can almost hear someone singing, “This is just what heaven means to me”! Think about it! – HDS

PRAYER

By R.G. Lee

After meeting R.G. Lee and hearing him preach, when I think about prayer I think about this message. He said:

Our world is a sick world–disillusioned, war-scarred, head-dizzy, body-weary, sin-smitten–a world in despair. Human philosophy is bankrupt. Nations, weary and wicked, walk on the edges of abysses. Men and women everywhere are bewildered and distracted by the problems and difficulties of life. Some leaders “loose wild tongues that hold not God in awe.”

When God’s People Pray

There are so many problems that cannot be solved, so many dangers that cannot be averted, so many burdens that cannot be borne by human strength and wisdom, ingenuity and genius. What we need is what God can do. What God can do will be done for us when God’s people pray. There is nothing so necessary in the lives of churches and individuals today as earnest, continued, importunate prayer.

It is the conviction of all who have proved the faithfulness of God that nothing lies beyond the reach of prayer except that which lies outside the will of God. There is no such thing as unanswered prayer when the basis of our beseeching is found within that sovereign will.

The needs of the world are so many and varied and complex. The evils that threaten to lead our greatest graces to the grave and leave the world no copy are so strong, defiant and daring. Apart from the right kind of prayer, there is little hope for us to achieve what God wants us to achieve.

 Power Is Unleashed Through Prayer

Jesus said, “Men ought always to pray, and not to faint.” Andrew Murray said, “In relation to His people, God works only in answer to their prayer.” Jowett said, “I’d rather teach one man to pray than ten men to preach.” Spurgeon said, “Cares are manifold; therefore let your prayers be manifold, for prayer is the sword that will cut the Gordian knot if it cannot be untied.”

By these words we learn that great is the law of intercession. Abraham interceded for wicked Sodom, Moses for wayward and complaining Israel, Samuel for the nation changing its form of government, Elijah for an apostate nation in disaster and for the Zarephath widow in poverty and sorrow, Paul for the church he founded, Jesus for the disciples He called.

Knowing that intercessory prayer is our mightiest weapon and the supreme call for all Christians today, I pleadingly urge our people everywhere to pray. Believing that prayer is the greatest contribution that our people can make in this critical hour, I humbly urge that we take time to pray–and when we take time, really pray.

Let us remember that Goodell said, “He who prays most, helps most”; that Pierson said, “Every step in the progress of missions is directly traceable to prayer”; that Eugene Stock said, “He who faithfully prays at home does as much for foreign missions as the man on the field”; that the poet said, “The place where we can reach the store of hoarded gold and free it for our Lord, the place where God Himself descends and fights for us, is the place of prayer.”

It Is Your Personal Privilege to Pray

You CAN pray. You may muzzle a man so that he cannot articulate a syllable, but you have not made it impossible for him to pray. You may cast a man into a dungeon and load his limbs with chains, keeping him from all manner of communication with his fellowmen, but you cannot keep him from having a conversation with God.

And what is more, and better still, you cannot keep God from coming to the help of His people–to the help of His people against their foes–for God has promised to be, in our behalf, an enemy to our enemies. The door has never yet been forged, the dungeon never yet constructed, the adversary never yet so mighty that can exclude God from His people.

Prayer is the highest of all our privileges as followers of Jesus. Of that privilege, no human power can deprive us. Let us prize it highly and prove it thoroughly in these serious days through which we are passing.

An Appeal for All of Us to Pray

Let there be prayer at sunup, at noonday, at sundown, at midnight–all through the day. Let us all pray for our children, our youth, our aged, our pastors, our homes. Let us pray for our churches, that they may fill their God-appointed missions. Let us pray for our missionaries at home and in foreign lands. Let us pray for ourselves, that we may not lose the word concern out of our Christian vocabulary.

Let us pray for nations in distress, for our own nation, for those who have never known Jesus Christ and redeeming love, for moral forces everywhere, for our national leaders, for all hearts that they may hold no malice, for our tongues and pens, that we be not hurtfully critical.

Let prayer be our portion. Let prayer be our pastime. Let prayer be our passion. Let prayer be our practice. Let us be found at the throne of grace, not only with holy boldness but with serene confidence–knowing that God is faithful to perform that which He has promised and that God is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that in us worketh.- By R.G. Lee

MISUNDERSTANDING MOTHERS

Is a mother mean or loving when she does what this mother did?

• I loved you enough to ask where you were going, with whom, and what time you would be home.

• I loved you enough to be silent and let you discover that your new best friend was a creep.

• I loved you enough to stand over you for an hour while you cleaned your room, a task that should have taken 15 minutes.

• I loved you enough to let you see my faults in everyday life – Children must learn that their parents aren’t perfect – only Jesus is!

• I loved you enough to let you accept the responsibility for your actions even though the penalties were so harsh they almost broke my heart.

• But most of all, I loved you enough to say “No” when I knew you would hate me for it, and perhaps never get over it!

Mothers who act in this fashion are loving, not mean.

THINKING ABOUT MOTHERS

On Mother’s Day, when many receive cards, calls, gifts, etc., I can’t help but think about those who don’t. I also think about those who receive a mere token to acknowledge the holiday, but are ignored the rest of the year. That must be painful.

However, I also think about how amazing the mothers love is.Even when they are ignored, disrespected, or shown attention without affection they keep loving their children, smiling in their presence, and helping them with their needs – although they are wounded and weeping in secret. They wonder why they receive so little when they have given so much, yet their love for the child isn’t lessened.

If it ended there that would be bad enough, but it often doesn’t. Sometimes the mother starts to wonder, “Where did I fail?”, “What more could I have done?”, or “Why won’t they forgive me?”. The child’s behavior puts her on a guilt trip. Instead of placing the blame on the child, where it should be, the mother puts it on her shoulders. She does so out of love for the child, even though she receives no love from the child. That’s amazing! But that’s what mothers do.

If you have such a mother you ought to be thankful – many don’t. There’s nothing like knowing you are loved unconditionally. It is humbling and helpful. It can bring out the best in a person when nothing else can. But sadly even the greatness of a mother’s love doesn’t always change those who have no love or concern for God.

There is no doubt about it, how you treat others is a reflection of your attitude toward God. Regardless of your mother’s faults and failures, if you lack love for her your heart isn’t right with the Lord. You are living in disobedience and depriving yourself of blessings. That’s a pitiful position to be in. If that’s where you are you need to repent of your sin. You ought to love your mother as God loves you with all your imperfections. Think about it!- HDS

MY TRIP

I just returned from a trip – a long trip. I went back to Missouri where I was born and raised. I visited every school I attended. Then I went to all the lakes and rivers where I fished, the ball parks where I played, and the churches where I preached and worshipped. Not only did I visit places,I saw faces and small details of experiences throughout my life.

After that, I traveled to Tennessee, Kentucky, and Ohio, where I had pastored, before making it back to Texas. And once here, I saw many people that are dear to my heart. You might not have known that I made this trip, but I did. In fact I made the trip in one night! Truth is, I did so without ever leaving my recliner.

I had not planned this trip. The fact of the matter is that I didn’t want to take it. It happened while I was desperately trying to sleep. I mention all this because I suspect that someday you to will take such a trip. And when you do you will see things that are painful as well as things that are pleasant. You will see things you regret as well as things that make you rejoice.

Knowing you will make such a trip someday, remember this – you are making tomorrow’s memories today. I pray they will all be good ones! Life is a gift from God, what you do with it is your gift to God. After my trip I thought about what I used to do that I can’t do now. And that makes me determined to do what I can, the best I can, while I can. I pray that you will do the same. Think about it! – HDS
