WHERE THERE’S A WILL THERE’S A WAY

August 9, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

Like most people, my mother was my greatest teacher. Being uneducated she had a lot of limitations, but she found ways to teach me some very valuable lessons. Although mom failed to teach me about spiritual matters, she taught me a lot about practical things–mostly through quaint little sayings that have a way of sticking in your mind. One of her favorites was, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way”. I didn’t pay much attention back then, but the older I got the more I appreciated them.

I just read a story about a 75 year old lady that had recently came to faith in Christ, that illustrates what mom meant when she said, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way”.

Like many newly-converted believers, her desire was to serve God in any way possible, but she had one troubling question for which she had no answer:  how could she best be used in God’s service?  She eventually approached her pastor with the dilemma and said, “I believe God has called me into some sort of ministry; what should I do?” Since he had no idea what might suit her, he replied, “Maybe you should go home and pray about it.” Now, this is Pastoring 101—if you don’t know the answer, suggest prayer!

After returning home, she followed her pastor’s advice, and sensed that God wanted her to do something to reach students who attended a nearby university.  Thinking of how to connect with them, she hurried to the drugstore, bought a pack of 3×5 cards, and wrote on each one: “Are you homesick? Come to my home for tea at 4:00.”  Then she added her address.

She took her stack of cards and went around the University of Melbourne campus, putting them in places where students were sure to see them: bulletin boards, dining hall, restroom mirrors, car windshields—you name it. She went back home and began preparing tea. When four o’clock came, no one knocked at the door. Day after day, no one showed up. Instead of becoming discouraged, she continued to pray and prepare tea . . . just in case.

At last, on the fifteenth day, an Indonesian student was at her door, homesick and as eager to talk as she was to listen. Excitedly she served tea and gave him a listening ear as he intently told his story.

When he returned to campus, he told all his friends, “Hey, you won’t believe it! I met a lady that’s just like my grandmother.” The young man’s visit was the beginning of other students going to her home at four o’clock for tea. Soon her house was filled with college kids eager to talk. What started as a simple God-given desire to minister to lost souls led to ten years of one-on-one ministry for a woman who sought God’s direction in her service for Him.

When she died there were no less than seventy pallbearers, all of whom were Indonesian, Malaysian, Indian, and other  international students who had come to her home for tea and conversation—and had found Jesus Christ.

Imagine that!

Here’s the bottomline–Those who truly desire to serve God will find a way to do it. They focus on what they can do rather than what they can’t do. They think about their liberties rather than their limitations. Their compassion for others causes them to be creative. They see the value of “little things” and are willing to do what others won’t. They have a will and they find a way!

PRIORITIZING YOUR PASSIONS

August 8, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.–Psalm 42:1

What are the passions that drive your life? In other words, what motivates and inspires you to get up in the morning and face your day?

For some, your passion is your work. Now, work is good and can give you a sense of fulfillment in life. And I hope you get up in the morning excited about your work. But I also hope you have a job that’s more than a job—a calling of God on your life.

And then there’s a passion for your family. That’s especially good to prioritize and desire above all things to make your house a home so that your children walk with God and your family is committed to Jesus Christ. We need a passion for that!

David said in today’s passage that your highest passion, the one that surpasses all others, should be for God. Like a thirsty deer running to drink from flowing waters, you and I are to run in desperate need to God. Other godly passions are good, as long as they’re placed in the context of your greatest passion of all, the Lord Jesus.

So when it comes to your passions, keep the main thing the main thing by focusing on making Jesus Lord of your life and letting all your other passions flow from that!–Jack Graham

KEEP GOD AS YOUR DRIVING PASSION AND ALLOW ALL YOUR OTHER DREAMS AND DESIRES TO FLOW FROM HIM.

GOD’S PLAN FOR PROSPERITY

August 7, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the Law, which Moses My servant commanded thee: turn not from It to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.   (Joshua 1:7).

Yes, the LORD will be with us in our holy war, but He demands of us that we strictly follow His rules, Our victories will very much depend upon our obeying Him with all our heart, throwing strength and courage into the actions of our faith. If we are halfhearted we cannot expect more than half a blessing. We must obey the LORD with care and thoughtfulness. “Observe to do” is the phrase used, and it is full of meaning. This is referred to every part of the divine will; we must obey with universal readiness. Our rule of conduct is “according to all the law.” We may not pick and choose, but we must take the LORD’s commands as they come, one and all. In all this we must go on with exactness and constancy Ours is to be a straightforward course which bends neither to the right nor to the left. We are not to err by being more rigid than the law, nor turn out of levity to a more See and easy way. With such obedience there will come spiritual prosperity. O LORD, help us to see if it be not even so! We shall not test Thy promise in vain.(Faith’s Checkbook)

THE TRYING OF FAITH

August 6, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” James 1:2-4

Those who know me know that I’ve made a habit of saying, “For the Christian, the future always looks bright if you look far enough ahead. The best is yet to come”. I don’t keep repeating that because it is just a cute little saying, but because it is essential to view life from that perspective if we are to triumph over the trials and temptations of life. To live victoriously we must keep “Looking unto Jesus” and “consider Him…lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds”(Hebrews 12:2-3). We must view every experience in the light of God’s “exceeding great and precious promises..”(2 Peter 1:4). For the believer, everything has a purpose and will “work together for good”(Romans 8:28). We just have to wait.

Speaking in this regards, Adrian Rogers wrote:

What does God want out of you? He wants you to experience the fullness of Christ. And the way to this is through trials and tribulations. Can you be patient during this process? If you’re like most people, probably not. We become like children who don’t know the difference between “No” and “Not yet.” If you say, “Wait a while,” to them that is, “No.” They want it now. But God is interested in maturing you. A Danish proverb says, “Give to a pig when it grunts and give to a child when it cries, and you will have a fine pig and a bad child.” Tribulation brings patience, and patience makes us mature.

What are you waiting for? What are you struggling with? Give it to Jesus. Trust in His timing and His provision.

LAW IN THE HEART

August 5, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide. (Psalm 37:31).

Put the law into the heart, and the whole man is right. This is where the law should be; for then it lies, like the tables of stone in the ark, in the place appointed for it. In the head it puzzles, on the back it burdens, in the heart it upholds.

What a choice word is here used, “the law of his God”! When we know the LORD as our own God His law becomes liberty to us. God with us in covenant makes us eager to obey His will and walk in His commands. Is the precept my Father’s precept? Then I delight in it.

We are here guaranteed that obedient-hearted man shall be sustained in every step that he takes. He will do that which is right, and he shall therefore do that which is wise. Holy action is always the most prudent, though it may not at the time seem to be so, We are moving along the great highroad of God’s providence and grace when we keep to the way of His law. The Word of God has never misled a single soul yet; its plain directions to walk humbly, justly, lovingly, and in the fear of the LORD are as much words of wisdom to make our way prosperous as rules of holiness to keep our garments clean. He walks surely who walks righteously. (C. H. Spurgeon)
