PLEASING GOD

March 29, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

—-be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. —Romans 12:2
Most people are miserable because they resent and resist God’s will. They have no interest in His interest–no desire to do what He desires. However, believe it or not, some people are miserable because they are trying to please God. Regardless of what they do, how much they do, or how well they do it, they feel it is never enough. If that describes you, these words from A. B. Simpson (1843-1919) should be helpful:
Many Christians are in the place that the Lord has appointed them, and yet the devil is harassing their lives with a sense that they are not quite pleasing the Lord. If they could just settle down in the place that God has assigned them and fill it faithfully and lovingly for Him, there would be more joy in their hearts and more power in their lives. God puts us in various places to serve Him, and the secret of accomplishing the most is to recognize our place as designated from Him and our service in it as pleasing to Him. Even in the great factory or the complex machine there is a place for the smallest screw and rivet as well as the great driving wheel and piston. So God has His “small parts” whose business is simply to stay where He puts them and to believe that He wants them there and is making the most of their lives in the little spaces that they fill for Him. There is something all can do, Tho’ you’re neither wise nor strong; You can be a helper true, You can stand when friends are few, Some lone heart has need of you, You can help along.

SERVICE OF WAITING

March 28, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

“After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithyma: but the Spirit suffered them not” (Acts 16:7).

George Matheson (1842-1906), the blind Scottish preacher/poet, is one of my favorite writers. I probably have more quotes from him in the fly-leafs of my Bible than anyone else. God used his great hardships and suffering to give him great insights and to prepare him to minister to those in need. Here is another quote that I recently found that blessed my heart. I send it to you with the hopes that it will be a blessing to you as well:

What a strange prohibition! These men were going into Bithynia just to do Christ’s work, and the door is shut against them by Christ’s own Spirit. I, too, have experienced this in certain moments. I have sometimes found myself interrupted in what seemed to me a career of usefulness. Opposition came and forced me to go back, or sickness came and compelled me to retire into a desert apart.

It was hard at such times to leave my work undone when I believed that work to be the service of the Spirit. But I came to remember that the Spirit has not only a service of work, but a service of waiting. I came to see that in the Kingdom of Christ there are not only times for action, but times in which to forbear acting. I came to learn that the desert place apart is often the most useful spot in the varied life of man–more rich in harvest than the seasons in which the corn and wine abounded. I have been taught to thank the blessed Spirit that many a darling Bithynia had to be left unvisited by me.

And so, Thou Divine Spirit, would I still be led by Thee. Still there come to me disappointed prospects of usefulness. Today the door seems to open into life and work for Thee; tomorrow it closes before me just as I am about to enter.

Teach me to see another door in the very inaction of the hour. Help me to find in the very prohibition thus to serve Thee, a new opening into Thy service. Inspire me with the knowledge that a man may at times be called to do his duty by doing nothing, to work by keeping still, to serve by waiting. When I remember the power of the “still small voice,” I shall not murmur that sometimes the Spirit suffers me not to go.

***

“When I cannot understand my Father’s leading,
And it seems to be but hard and cruel fate,
I Still I hear that gentle whisper ever
pleading,God is working, God is faithful, ONLY WAIT.”

WAR RICH

March 27, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.–James 1:12
The following words, from the newsletter “Open Doors”, were written by Ghassan Khalaf. Amid the bombings and destruction of Lebanon he “faithfully visited victims of war to encourage them in their faith.

Frequently after wars, there emerges a class of people called “the war rich’; those who seize the opportunity and improve their own conditions. This is exactly what happened after the war in Lebanon.

But what about God’s children? Do we accept the hard times as opportunities to prove the genuineness of our faith which is more precious than gold, so we might receive the crown of life?

Believers in Lebanon benefited much from passing through the fire of war. They became “war rich” on the spiritual plane. Those who love God collect spiritual fortunes and plenty of practical experiences. In times of distress the cyclone shakes us so that our dry leaves and rotten fuit fall down. At the same time, trials increase our stability by extending our roots into the depths. After the storm you see believers still holding their hands high, and roses in their hands.

Because, if you see a person who has passed through the valley of terror and reached the land of peace, with a flower plucked from that valley in his hand, then you will know that God was with him and that his soul has kept the freshness of faith.

Dear friend, as long as we are in this wicked world we will never be without enemies, suffering, and pain, but if we remain faithful we can profit from our problems. Let us trust in the great God who promised a “crown of life” to those who “endureth temptation”.

CONSIDER OTHERS

March 26, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

The Bible clearly teaches that we are to be considerate of others –ministering to them, edifying them, never becoming a stumblingblock to them. Yet, as I examine my life, I am forced to admit that I frequently fail. I am driven to my knees as I seek forgiveness. However, I need more than forgiveness–I need help, so as to not repeat my failures!
I need as many reminders and as much help as I can get, to help me help others, rather than hurting them. These words from the pen of Frances Ridley Havergal (1836-79) do just that. Read them slowly, think about them deeply, practice them always:
A vexation arises, and our expressions of impatience hinder others from
taking it patiently. Disappointment, ailment, or even weather depresses
us; and our look or tone of depression hinders others from maintaining
a cheerful and thankful spirit. We say an unkind thing, and another is
hindered in learning the holy lesson of charity that thinketh no evil. We
say a provoking thing, and our sister or brother is hindered in that day’s
effort to be meek. How sadly, too, we may hinder without word or act! For
wrong feeling is more infectious than wrong doing; especially the
various phases of ill temper,–gloominess, touchiness, discontent,
irritability,–do we not know how catching these are?

THE MORNING COMETH

March 25, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

And the evening and the morning were the first day.– Gen 1:5.

For many years I have stressed the fact that God reckons a day as beginning in the evening, rather than the morning. I was blessed when I recently read the following article by F. B. Meyer. It gives a lot of food for thought.

SIX TIMES these words are repeated, and the one lesson that rings out is that God counts His periods, not as man does from night to night, but from evening till morning. ‘ Not first the light, and after that the dark; but first the dark, and after that the light.” God saw that each night would end in daylight, and that the end of all the nights and all the days would be the eternal day in which there can be no darkness at all. This is what St. John saw: “There shall be no night there, for the Lord God giveth them light” (Rev 22:5). The sun of materialism sets in a black ocean, unlit by the star of hope. But as long as God is, we believe that He will make a new heaven and new earth; and from out of what seems disappointing and hopeless He will bring a fairer creation than before. Creation shall participate in the glorious liberty of the sons of God. Watchman what of the night? The morning cometh! The darkness will finally pass away before the radiance of the dawn, and this because God is God; He is Love and Light and His Word creates.

So it is with the individual. Life may be dark. Sin is darkness; sorrow is darkness; ignorance is darkness, and these three may be part of your daily lot. But the night is far spent, the day is at hand. For you the morning star is in the sky. The education of your soul is like that of a child at school. How hard and difficult those first days, but when the rudiments were mastered; when the discipline had played its part, then were reaped the harvests of sowing, and darkness was turned to day. Be of good cheer! Even in death there is nothing to fear. “That night they caught nothing; but when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore.” The dark waves, as they break around the boat of your life, are bearing you onward to the morning meal upon the golden sands, where you will find that Love has gone before you with its preparations! It shall be evening and morning and lo! the day without night.

O God, the darkness and light are both alike to Thee, and the night shineth as the day. Help us to follow Thee even through the valley of the shadow, and to trust Thee whatever be our lot; until the day dawns, and the shadows flee away. AMEN
