CLEARLY COMMITTED

February 17, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

Sometimes we deceive ourselvles and try to deceive others regarding our committment to Christ. Then we read a certain scripture or perhaps a testimony from a fellow Christian and our eyes are opened–we realize that we are not nearly so committed to our Lord as we pretend to be.
The following statement was found in the belongings of a young African Christian who had been martyered for his faith. Perhaps it would do us good to ask ourselves–“Am I this committed to Christ?”
I no longer need preeminence, prosperity, position, promotions, plaudits, or popularity. I don’t have to be right, first, tops, recognized, praised, regarded or rewarded. I now live by faith, lean on His presence, walk by patience, lifted by prayer and labor by His power.

“My past is redeemed. My present makes sense. My future is secure. I’m finished and done with low living, sight walking, small planning, smooth knees, colorless dreams, lamed visions, mundane talking, cheap living and dwarfed goals.

“My face is set. My gait is fast. My goal is Heaven. My road is narrow; my way rough; my companions few; my Guide reliable; my vision clear. I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, deluded or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the face of an adversary, negotiate at the table of an enemy, and ponder at the pool of popularity or meander in the maze of mediocrity.

“I won’t give up, shut up, or let up, until I have stayed up, stored up, prayed up, paid up and preached up for the cause of Christ. I am a disciple of Jesus. I must go till He comes, give till I drop, preach till all know and work till He stops me. And when He comes for His own, HE WILL HAVE NO PROBLEM RECOGNIZING ME… MY BANNER WILL BE CLEAR!

THE PERIL OF PRIDE

February 16, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord: though hand join in hand, he shall not go unpunished.-Proverbs 16:5
Little do we know of the danger of pride. It is harmfulin many ways, but most of all it hated and punished by God Himself–there is no escape from its consequences.Judgement of pride is certain. Thomas Brooks, in 1660,wrote these words of warning:
Pride sets itself against the honor, being, and
sovereignty of God. Other sins strike at the word
of God, the people of God, and the creatures of
God—but pride strikes directly at the very being
of God. He bears a special hatred against pride.

It was pride which turned angels into devils.
They would be above others in heaven—and
therefore God cast them down to hell.

Pride is a sin which of all sins, makes a person
most like Satan. Pride is Satan’s disease. Pride
is so base a disease, that God had rather see His
dearest children to be buffeted by Satan, than
that in pride they should be like Satan.

Humility makes a man like to angels—and pride
makes an angel a devil. Pride is worse than the
devil, for the devil cannot hurt you until pride
has possessed you.

If you would see the devil portrayed to the life
—look upon a proud soul; for as face answers
to face, so does a proud soul answer to Satan.

Proud souls are Satan’s apes, and none imitate
him to the life like these. And oh that they were
sensible of it, before it is too late, before the
door of darkness be shut upon them!

How true that is. Few things, if any, can do so much
damage as pride. He who harbors pride in his heart
invites God’s judgement into his life. Deal with it before
God deals with you! The most dishonest person on earth
is the person who thinks they have reason to boast.

GROWING OLDER

February 15, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

They shall still bring forth fruit in old age—. Psalm 92:14
Some people have the mistaken idea that cranky old men (or women) get that way as a result of getting older and maybe suffering disappointments in their later years. The fact of the matter is that a cranky old man has been a crank in the making throughout the years of his life. It didn’t just suddenly happen. He has always been a crank and is just getting worse as the years go by. No one becomes a sweet old lady or a cranky old man just because they reach a certain age. Whatever they are when they get old is what they’ve been becoming throughout the course of their life.
In 1908, J. R.Miller wrote these words of wisdom:” It takes a great deal of grace to grow old sweetly and beautifully. It is not possible to carry the alertness and energy of young manhood, into advanced years. Yet if we live wisely and rightly all our lives—old age ought to be the best of life. We certainly ought to make it beautiful and godly, for our life is not finished until we come to its very last day.

We ought to be wiser when we are old—than ever we have been in any former years. We ought to have learned by experience. We ought to be better in every way—with more of God’s peace in our hearts, with more gentleness and patience. We ought to have learned self-control, and to be better able to rule our own spirit. We ought to have more love, more joy, more thoughtfulness, to be more considerate, to have more humility.

Old age never should be the dregs of the years, the mere cinder of a burnt-out life. One may not have the vigor and strenuousness of the mid-years—but one should be every way truer, richer-hearted, holier. If the outward man has grown weaker and feebler—the inner man should have grown stronger and Christlier.”

So, what have you made yourself to be? Which best describes you–sweet or sour? For others the question is–what are you making yourself to be? Listen, you are not going to suddenly hit eighty and become something totally different than what you are now. You are presently in the process of becoming what you will be, only to a greater degree. If you want to be a sweet, kind, useful person, the kind of person others admire, then you best be doing those things that produce those character traits right now. Yield yourself to the control of the Holy Spirit and watch Him work as He transforms you “from glory to glory”(2 Cor.3:18) into the image of Christ.

LOVE IS KIND

February 14, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
Ephesians 4:32

If it weren’t for love, most songwriters would be out of business. From “All I Need Is Love,” to “Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing” and “I Love You, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah,” no topic has dominated the popular culture like love. But so far, no one has written a song entitled “Love Is a Commandment.”

We think of love as a mood, a feeling, a sentiment, an attitude, and a passion; and rightly so, for love may contain some or all of those emotions. But at its essence, love is the selfless commitment of putting the needs of others before one’s own wishes or welfare. It’s a choice we make and a command we obey. It’s the opposite of offended pride, bitterness, selfishness, rudeness, and egocentricity.

Perhaps the greatest barometer of love is kindness, so we should always be asking ourselves, “What have I done for someone else today?”

The Bible says, “Love . . . is kind” (1 Corinthians 13:4), and spiritual maturity comes as we realize that love is a command that results in a never-ceasing stream of kindness toward others. As someone once said, “It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.”

Love is the giving of oneself to another.
David Jeremiah

LOVE YOUR ENEMIES

February 13, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

Many Christians live the Gospel as if it’s simply a fairy tale or cute story that’s been passed down through the ages. Yet if we truly believe that God’s Word is our final authority, we will live out every command-including God’s command in Luke 6. Believing the Bible is easy when people agree with you, but it becomes more difficult when critics question your faith.

Loving friends is easy. You agree with them on most things, enjoy the same hobbies, listen to each other’s problems, and help out when needed. But one of the toughest things to do is love those who hate you.

Human nature tells us to return hatred, to seek revenge, and to despise our enemies. Yet God calls for us to love our enemies: “Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.”(Luke 6:27-28) God doesn’t call you to tolerate your enemies or even ignore them. He calls for you to love them.

Just as you love your friends who minister to you, love your enemies who tear you down. Do good to them. Provide for their needs. Pray for God’s blessings in their lives. Speak encouraging words to them. Treat them as kindly as you would your best friend.

How do you treat your enemies? Ignoring critics and enemies takes great strength. Yet God wants you to go beyond that and love them. Thank God for your enemies. Thank God for the ability to display His love and kindness to those who wish you harm.

Do you really believe God’s Word? Do you seek to obey God’s commands? God has commanded you to love others, even those who purposefully hurt you. Rather than seeking revenge or even ignoring those who hurt you, go out of your way to love them, showing Christ’s love through your response. (Dr. Paul Chappell)
