A “FOREVER” KIND OF LOVE

January 20, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. —Romans 5:7-8

We find it easy to love people who are easy to love. In reality, we tend to like people who are like us. Furthermore, we assume that God’s love is bound by the same standards. If He loves us, we assume it must mean that we are not all that bad. Not only is this view false in every way, it destroys a deep appreciation for the amazing beauty of God’s love—that He loved the unlovely, and died for the unloving.

D. A. Carson illustrated the difference between our vision of love and God’s:

Charles and Susan are walking down the beach, hand in hand. They’ve kicked off their shoes and the wet sand squishes between their toes. Charles turns to Susan, gazes deeply into her large hazel eyes and says, “Susan, I love you; I really do.” What does he mean? If we assume he has decency and Christian virtue, the least he could mean is something like, “Susan, you mean everything to me. I can’t live without you. Your smile paralyzes me from fifty yards; your sparkling good humor, your beautiful eyes, the scent of your hair—everything about you transfixes me . . . I really love you.”

Or do his words I love you mean something like, “Susan, in spite of the fact that your nose is so large it belongs in cartoons, your hair has enough grease to lubricate an eighteen-wheeler, your knees make a camel look elegant, and your personality would scare Attila the Hun, I really love you.”

I’m guessing Charles meant the first one! Yet this is how human love differs from God’s love. When Romans 5 tells us that God “loved us,” it doesn’t mean that God looked down on us and said. “You mean everything to me. I can’t live without you: your personality, your witty conversation, your beauty, your smile— everything about you.”

Not a chance!  When God says, “I love you,” He is saying, “Listen—your nose and greasy hair, your disjointed knees and selfish personality, your wretched sinfulness—all make you disgustingly unattractive to Me. But I love you because I have chosen to love you, through My Son, your Savior.”

My friend, if you think you deserve God’s love, even to the smallest degree, you will never feel totally secure in Him. You will live in perpetual fear that you might do something undeserving of His love and, if that is the case, then you definitely will!

Don’t be afraid. This is the amazing beauty of God’s love toward us, that “while we were still sinners, He died for us.” The truth is, there isn’t anything you can do that will ever change His mind. His love for you is the same yesterday, today . . . and forever!

Thank the Lord for loving you so much that He not only chose to die for you while you were still in your sins, but He chooses to love you every day in spite of your sin. Pray that He will give you strength to obey His command to love others in the same way He has loved you.(From “A Wisdom Retreat”, Scripture references changed to the KJV, HDS)

TOUGH TIMES

January 19, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all. —Psalm 34:19
Are you going through a tough time in your life right now? Here’s what you need to remember–if God brings you to it He will bring you through it! He who never lies has spoken, and He never fails. Listen to these words of wisdom from the pen of pastor Jack Graham:

It’s been well said that God had only one Son without sin, but he had no sons without suffering. And I would be less than faithful to the Word of God and the testimony of Christ if I somehow told, or even suggested, that you could experience life without suffering or sorrow. The Scripture promises you and me that affliction is part of living the Christian life.

In your journey on this earth, there are going to be times when you feel that you are all alone. But as a believer in Christ, you need to immediately identify those feelings as lies from the enemy.

Now if God’s character and nature were to leave you alone in your trials and allow you to walk through these valleys by yourself, then I would understand being hopeless in the midst of suffering. But the God you and I serve has promised time and time again to never leave us alone in tough times!

Yes, bad things happen to good people. But God has promised that he will deliver you from every affliction. So when the inevitable hard times of life hit, trust completely that the God who raised Jesus Christ from the dead will resurrect you and bring you through any suffering!

Perhaps you’ve heard someone say,”Tough times never last, but tough people do”. Nonsense! Getting through your trials isn’t about being “tough”–no one is tough enough to get through anything. I don’t care how strong you are there is something that is more than you alone can bear. It’s not about being “tough”, it’s about being “righteous”. Only the righteous person can truly say,”I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”(Phil. 4:13). Only the righteous person can claim the promise that “the LORD delivereth him out of them all”. Only the righteous can expect relief! –HDS

THE PEARL NECKLACE

January 18, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

The cheerful girl with bouncy golden curls was almost five. Waiting with
her mother at the checkout stand, she saw them: a circle of glistening
white pearls in a pink foil box. “Oh please, Mommy, can I have them?
Please, Mommy, please?”

Quickly the mother checked the back of the little foil box and then looked
back into the pleading blue eyes of her little girl’s upturned face. “A
dollar ninety-five. That’s almost $2.00. If you really want them, I’ll
think of some extra chores for you and in no time you can save enough money
to buy them for yourself. Your birthday’s only a week away and you might
get another crisp dollar bill from Grandma.”

As soon as Jenny got home, she emptied her penny bank and counted out 17
pennies. After dinner, she did more than her share of chores and she went
to the neighbor and asked Mrs. McJames if she could pick dandelions for ten
cents. On her birthday, Grandma did give her another new dollar bill and at
last she had enough money to buy the necklace.

Jenny loved her pearls. They made her feel dressed up and grown up. She
wore them everywhere-Sunday school, kindergarten, even to bed. The only time
she took them off was when she went swimming or had a bubble bath. Mother
said if they got wet, they might turn her neck green.

Jenny had a very loving daddy and every night when she was ready for bed, he
would stop whatever he was doing and come upstairs to read her a story.

One night when he finished the story, he asked Jenny, “Do you love me?”

“Oh yes, Daddy. You know that I love you.”

“Then give me your pearls.”

“Oh, Daddy, not my pearls. But you can have Princess – the white horse from
my collection. The one with the pink tail. Remember, Daddy? The one you
gave me. She’s my favorite.”

“That’s okay, Honey. Daddy loves you. Good night.” And he brushed her
cheek with a kiss.

About a week later, after the story time, Jenny’s Daddy asked again, “Do you
love me?”

“Daddy, you know I love you.”

“Then give me your pearls.”

“Oh Daddy, not my pearls. But you can have my baby doll. The brand new
one I got for my birthday. She is so beautiful and you can have the yellow
blanket that matches her sleeper.”

“That’s okay. Sleep well. God bless you, little one. Daddy loves you.” And
as always, he brushed her cheek with a gentle kiss.

A few nights later when her daddy came in, Jenny was sitting on her bed with
her legs crossed Indian-style. As he came close, he noticed her chin was
trembling and one silent tear rolled down her cheek.

“What is it, Jenny? What’s the matter?”

Jenny didn’t say anything but lifted her little hand up to her daddy. And
when she opened it, there was her little pearl necklace. With a little
quiver, she finally said, “Here, Daddy. It’s for you.”

With tears gathering in his own eyes, Jenny’s kind daddy reached out with
one hand to take the dime-store necklace, and with the other hand he reached
into his pocket and pulled out a blue velvet case with a strand of genuine
pearls and gave them to Jenny. He had them all the time. He was just
waiting for her to give up the dime-store stuff so he could give her genuine
treasure. –Author Unknown

Dear friend we never out give God! We never lose when we give Him what He demands. Don’t hold out on God and don’t resent what He requires. His commands are issued out of the depths of His infinite wisdom and everlasting love. The demands of discipleship might seem extreme and unreasonable to our way of thinking, but we don’t always know what is best for us. Remember–God always gives the best to those who leave the choice up to Him. –HDS

FAITH WITHOUT WORKS

January 17, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. James 2:26

Some folks just don’t get it! They boldly declare their faith, but they fail to demonstrate it. They don’t realize that it is dead. James condemns profession without practice. He tells us that true saving faith will manifest itself in works. We are saved through faith, not works, but the faith that saves works! I love the way the late Adrian Rogers put it. He said–

When you ask God for something, do you just sit back and do nothing and say, “Well, I’m going to show my faith by doing nothing.” To the contrary, you will show your faith by doing something. For faith without works is what? Dead! (see James 2:20)

Do you want a house? Pray for it. Then say “Amen” with a hammer and saw.

Do you want a wife? Pray for one. Then go shave, put on some cologne, learn some manners, and learn how to be thoughtful and loving.

What have you been praying earnestly about the last week? What is your heart’s desire? Ask the Holy Spirit to show you how you can put feet to that prayer. Then, walk the talk!

So, are you walking in faith? Do you really believe that God will do what He has promised? Do you even know what He has promised? Is your faith in faith, or in God? Are you a part of the “Name it claim it crowd”? Remember, faith is believing that God will do what He promised and responding appropritely–in obedience. “Faith” without works is worthless, “dead”. If your faith is lacking get to know God by turning to His Word and accepting what He says as the truth. He never fails! “–faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God”(Romans 10:17).

THE WILES OF THE DEVIL

January 16, 2011 By Pastor David Stone

Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.–Ephesians 6:11
This interesting article appeared in “Senior Living” recently:

According to scientists, Arctic polar bears feed almost entirely on seals. In order to capture their meals, the bears often have to resort to sinister tactics.

For example, a polar bear will actually swim underwater and make a tiny scratching sound on the underside of the ice next to a seal’s feeding hole. When an unsuspecting and hungry seal hears this sound, he instinctively dives in for a quick bite to eat…only to become a quick dinner for the polar bear!

If you think about it, this cunning method of hunting is very similar to the way Satan works to entrap us in our Christian walk. So many times we instinctively respond to that familiar “scratching sound,” only to become a victim of his evil schemes.

Jesus tells us in John 10:10 that the “thief cometh not, but to steal and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

As believers, we are the prime targets to satisfy Satan’s insatiable and deadly appetite. But the sooner we realize that we have a very real enemy who’s looking to devour us, the better able we’ll be to avoid becoming a quick meal for the devil.

Be self-controlled, alert, walking in the Holy Spirit, in His Word, and always in prayer, because Scripture says Satan “walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” (1 Peter 5:8). As you walk daily with Christ, be on the lookout!

Ask the Lord to help you resist the many temptations this world has to offer. Pray He would help you submit to Him completely, and pray that He would provide a shield around your life to protect you from the devil’s schemes.
