NOT AFRAID

September 3, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

“By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.” Hebrews 11:23

We talk a lot about the dreadful condition and the desperate need of our nation, but few  actually do anything about it. Why? We Christians also talk a great deal about winning the lost before it is too late, but very few make any effort to do so. Why? I believe the answer is the same in both cases. Perhaps this illustration from Paul Chappell will help.

Russia was a controversial place during the early 1900s. Led by a dictator named Stalin, the country built up forces just in time for World War 2, a war that saw them betrayed by their “ally” Hitler, and eventually led to their switch to the Allied side of the war. One of Stalin’s leaders in his regime was Nikita Khrushchev. Khrushchev served many different roles including soldier, military leader, ruler of Ukraine, and party official. Khrushchev had a hand in a lot that went on during Stalin’s rule. After the death of Stalin, a long battle for the control of Russia took place, eventually leading to Khrushchev’s rise to power.

While in office, Khrushchev sought to de-Stalinize the nation and move them toward a more liberal form of government. He publicly denounced Stalin’s policies and ideas and spoke of his own ideas for moving Russia forward into a time of prosperity and growth. At one such meeting, he spent an unusual amount of time degrading Stalin. After his speech, during the comment period, someone in the crowd yelled out, “You worked with Stalin. Why didn’t you stop him?” A hush came over the room, and Khrushchev angrily boomed, “Who said that?” No one replied. “Now you know why I did nothing” he explained.

Khrushchev’s fear of Stalin kept him from speaking out against the atrocities Stalin committed. He allowed his fear to cause him to follow along in practices he knew were wrong, but no matter how much he detested Stalin, or how loudly he renounced his ideas, Khrushchev was always tied to the acts of the previous administration.

Even so, fear often causes us to neglect doing what we know we should do. Doing what is right often involves risk and/or sacrifice. We know what we should do, but we are frozen by fear. Fortunately, for Israel, the parents of Moses fought through their fears and did what was right. What about you?

If the need is truly as great as we say it is, should we not be making our very best effort to meet it? Don’t allow fear to rule your life and ruin your usefulness. You don’t have the right to be that selfish! Obey God regardless of how you feel and trust Him to supply your needs and bless your efforts.

CONDEMNED ALREADY

September 2, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

He that believeth on him is not comdemned; but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.–John 3:18
It is delightful to start the day by reading some portion of God’s word that promises strength to resist temptation, or grace to endure trials, or supplies when funds are low, or rewards for our labor, or heaven as our future home, but sometimes it is more helpful to be reminded of the awful state of unbelievers. Such reminders causes us to rejoice in our deliverance and encourages us to witness to our unsaved loved ones. The following, written by James Smith in 1860, serves that purpose very well:
The unbeliever’s condemnation is for sin; but his condemnation is not merely for violating the law–but for refusing a pardon, presented to him by God as an act of infinite mercy.

Every unbeliever is presently in a state of condemnation!

He is condemned, BY WHOM? By God, the righteous Judge, the Judge of all.

He is condemned, FOR WHAT? Not merely for breaking the law–but for insulting the Lawgiver, by refusing a pardon, procured at no less a cost than the death of his Son, and presented in the everlasting gospel.

He is condemned, WHEN? Now, already! At this moment, while he reads these lines! The manacled criminal in his cell, waiting for the day of execution, is not more really condemned, than is every unbeliever!

He is condemned, TO WHAT? Ah, who can tell? His punishment is represented . . .
by blackness, darkness, and a horrible tempest!
By weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth!
By a lake of fire, a bottomless pit, and a gnawing worm which never dies!

He is condemned, WITH WHOM? The devil and his demons–and with most depraved of the human race!

He is condemned, BY WHAT? Both the law–and the gospel; both the Creator–and the Savior!

See then, every unbeliever’s state–he is condemned already! Yes, however moral the life, however amiable the disposition–he is condemned already! Condemned to be driven from God, from holy angels, from blessed believers; and to be associated with devils and damned souls forever! Condemned, just because he would not believe in Jesus–he would not accept the pardon–he would not be reconciled to God.

O strange infatuation! O fearful delusion! O astonishing power of sin!

COMPLETE IN HIM

August 31, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power.–Colossians 2:10

“You are complete in Him. What words are these, from the same man who says, ‘In me dwells no good thing?’ May we learn to rejoice in Christ Jesus, while we learn, also, to have no confidence in the flesh.

It was so with the apostle. He felt that anything was too hard, the simplest thing too difficult, without Christ; the work before him only became possible—easy—when the promise was fulfilled—’My grace is sufficient for you; and my strength is made perfect in weakness.’ Then he could confidently say, ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’

Yes, Christian, although in your daily course you seem to struggle in your duty, and though nothing seems to go on satisfactorily, be assured of this, so long as you are really looking to Christ and relying upon Him—so long is He working in you by His Spirit—however difficult may be your tasks, you will make progress. You perhaps may never perceive it—you may not appear to make a step in advance—but, be not discouraged. Remember, ‘All the promises of God in Christ are yes, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God;’ and these promises are yours.”

GOD’S TIMING

August 30, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

“And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush…saying…I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt” (Acts 7:30, 32, 34).

Speaking of this verse, John Henry Jowett wrote: That was a long wait in preparation for a great mission. When God delays, He is not inactive. He is getting ready His instruments, He is ripening our powers; and at the Appointed moment we shall arise equal to our task. Even Jesus of Nazareth was thirty years in privacy, growing in wisdom before He began His work.

Another, unknown writer, said,God is never in a hurry but spends years with those He expects to greatly use. He never thinks the days of preparation too long or too dull.

The hardest ingredient in suffering is often time. A short, sharp pang is easily borne, but when a sorrow drags its weary way through long, monotonous years, and day after day returns with the same dull routine of hopeless agony, the heart loses its strength, and without the grace of God, is sure to sink into the very sullenness of despair. Joseph’s was a long trial, and God often has to burn His lessons into the depths of our being by the fires of protracted pain. “He shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver,” but He knows how long, and like a true goldsmith He stops the fires the moment He sees His image in the glowing metal. We may not see now the outcome of the beautiful plan which God is hiding in the shadow of His hand; it yet may be long concealed; but faith may be sure that He is sitting on the throne, calmly waiting the hour when, with adoring rapture, we shall say, “All things have worked together for good.” Like Joseph, let us be more careful to learn all the lessons in the school of sorrow than we are anxious for the hour of deliverance. There is a “need-be” for every lesson, and when we are ready, our deliverance will surely come, and we shall find that we could not have stood in our place of higher service without the very things that were taught us in the ordeal. God is educating us for the future, for higher service and nobler blessings; and if we have the qualities that fit us for a throne, nothing can keep us from it when God’s time has come. Don’t steal tomorrow out of God’s hands. Give God time to speak to you and reveal His will. He is never too late; learn to wait. (Streams in the Desert)

SORROW, GOD’S PLOWSHARE

August 29, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

“Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better” (Eccles. 7:3).

When sorrow comes under the power of Divine grace, it works out a manifold ministry in our lives. Sorrow reveals unknown depths in the soul, and unknown capabilities of experience and service. Giddy, trifling people are always shallow, and never suspect the little meannesses in their nature. Sorrow is God’s plowshare that turns up and subsoils the depths of the soul, that it may yield richer harvests. If we had never fallen, or were in a glorified state, then the strong torrents of Divine joy would be the normal force to open up all our souls’ capacities; but in a fallen world, sorrow, with despair taken out of it, is the chosen power to reveal ourselves to ourselves. Hence it is sorrow that makes us think deeply, long, and soberly.

Sorrow makes us go slower and more considerately, and causes us to examine our motives and dispositions. It is sorrow that opens up within us the capacities of the heavenly life, and it is sorrow that makes us willing to launch our capacities on a boundless sea of service for God and our fellows.

Imagine a class of lazy people living at the base of a great mountain range, who had never ventured to explore the valleys and canyons back in the mountains; and some day, when a great thunderstorm goes careening through the mountains, it turns the hidden glens into echoing trumpets, and reveals the inner recesses of the valley, like the convolutions of a monster sea shell, and then the dwellers at the foot of the hills are astonished at the maze and unexplored recesses of a region so near by, and yet so little known. So it is with many souls who sit idly by living on the outer edge of their own natures until great thunderstorms of sorrow reveal hidden depths within that were never before suspected.

God never uses anybody to a large degree, until after He breaks that one all to pieces. Joseph had more sorrow than all the other sons of Jacob, and it led him out into a ministry of bread for all nations. For this reason, the Holy Spirit said of him, “Joseph is a fruitful bough…by a well, whose branches run over the wall” (Gen. 49:22). It takes sorrow to widen the soul.
