THE BELIEVER’S WALL

June 2, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.–Proverbs 25:28

But the fruit of the Spirit is——-temperance—Galatians 5:22-23

Cities in the ancient world defended themselves with walls. Think of the time and energy invested in building a massive wall around a city, one stone at a time! But think of the consequences if the wall wasn’t built, or if it wasn’t properly maintained. A city with a weak or fallen wall issues an engraved invitation to its enemies to march right in.

Proverbs 25:28 likens self-control to the wall around a city. Self-control is a defense against enemies like temptation and impulse. If the wall of self-control has never been established or has not been maintained, our life is a prize waiting to be claimed by our spiritual enemies. But self-control for the Christian is not a matter of grit and determination. Yes, it takes resolve and commitment, but that is another way of saying “submission to the Holy Spirit.” For the Christian, self-control is part of the fruit of the Holy Spirit. It is His life within that gives the power to say “No” and “Yes” when self-control is called for.

To the degree that you are “out of control,” consider whether that is the degree to which the Spirit is not filling your heart and mind with His presence.

The fruit of the Spirit is not excitement or orthodoxy; it is character.

THE NEXT THING

June 1, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home – John 19:27

We are commanded to “look to Jesus” on the cross in order to know how to handle suffering (Hebrews 12:2).——

When we face overwhelming grief, unrelenting discouragement, or pounding pain, it is often hard to know what to do. We tend to want to roll up in a ball and hope that the storm will pass or that some easy solution will present itself.

However, the right response, even in times of great suffering, is to make practical preparations in the midst of your sorrow. You must still get out of bed, or go to work, or do the laundry, or pay the bills, or play with the children, or write up your will — no matter how low you may feel, ignoring your responsibilities will not help any problem go away.

Here was Jesus, in the darkest moment of human history, bearing the brunt of man’s and God’s wrath. No one has ever been in as low a state as Jesus was at this time. And, yet, he is making simple, mundane preparations for after his death. He is making sure that his mother will be cared for.

Elizabeth Elliot calls this fundamental need to face reality the “do the next thing” principle. When you don’t know what to do next, she says, do the next thing. This excellent and practical advice comes from an old, sacred poem:

Do it immediately, do it with prayer;
Do it reliantly, casting all care;
Do it with reverence, tracing His hand
Who placed it before thee with earnest command.
Stayed on Omnipotence, safe ‘neath His wing,
Leave all results, do the next thing.     —–From “A Good Thing”.

ABSOLUTELY AND WITHOUT QUESTION

May 31, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

“If ye love Me, keep my commandments.”John 14:15

God is our Father and we are His children. We are to obey Him absolutely and without question. Yet it is no blind obedience. We know that He loves us with a deep, tender, unchanging love. We know that He is wiser than we, infinitely wiser, and can never err. We know that when He denies a request—that the granting of it would be unkindness. We know that when He leads us in another path than the one we had marked out—that His is the right way. We know that when He chastens or corrects—that there is love in His chastisement or correction. We know that in all His government and discipline—that He is seeking only our highest good. Our whole duty therefore as God’s children, is to yield ourselves to His will.(By J. R. Miller, 1882) “—If a man me, he will keep my words—John 14:23)

MEMORIAL DAY

May 30, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

alt
It started shortly after the Civil War when families of the fallen decorated the graves of their loved ones who died in battle. Today we call it “Memorial Day” and we tend to include all our loved ones who have died. Remembering others is fine, we should do it often, but we need to remember “Memorial Day”–a day to honor those who died in defense of our country. That was the original intent.

From the time it was instituted until now we have enjoyed freedom that was purchased and preserved by the sacrifices of those who served in our armed forces. How could we ever forget the price they paid?

This day should cause our hearts to overflow with thanksgiving for those who loved liberty more than life, and freedom more than fortune, fame, and fun. Let us then honor these men and women by giving thanks for what they did. May we never forget that freedom isn’t free! So, as you enjoy your freedom, doing whatever you do, be grateful that someone cared enough to make the sacrifice necessary to secure it for you.

As our nation observes Memorial Day, please take time to reflect on what others have provided for you, thank God for His blessings, express in some appropriate way your appreciation, and pray–especially for the families who have suffered the loss of a loved one in the pursuit of freedom.

TAKE HEART

May 29, 2010 By Pastor David Stone

“God’s grace means that I can rest assured that I’ll have everything I need to be what he wants me to be and to do what he wants me to do in the situation in which he’s placed me.

I’m no longer restricted to the limits of my own strength and wisdom. By his grace, I’ve a new identity and a new potential. I’m a child of God; the risen Christ now lives inside of me. I need no longer fear people or circumstances; I don’t have to feel weak in the face of suffering or temptation, because I no longer rest in the resources of my own ability. I’m in Christ and he’s in me.

This new identity gives me new potential as I face the realities of life in this bent and broken world. God’s grace gives me reason to ‘take heart.’”–Paul David Tripp
