STAND STILL

May 10, 2018 By Pastor David Stone

STAND STILL

“Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord” (Exod. 14:13).

These words contain God’s command to the believer when he is reduced to great straits and brought into extraordinary difficulties. He cannot retreat; he cannot go forward; he is shut upon the right hand and on the left. What is he now to do?

The Master’s word to him is “stand still.” It will be well for him if, at such times, he listens only to his Master’s word, for other and evil advisers come with their suggestions. Despair whispers, “Lie down and die; give it all up.” But God would have us put on a cheerful courage, and even in our worst times, rejoice in His love and faithfulness.

Cowardice says, “Retreat; go back to the worldling’s way of action; you cannot play the Christian’s part; it is too difficult. Relinquish your principles.”

But, however much Satan may urge this course upon you, you cannot follow it, if you are a child of God. His Divine fiat has bid thee go from strength to strength, and so thou shalt, and neither death nor hell shall turn thee from thy course. What if for a while thou art called to stand still; yet this is but to renew thy strength for some greater advance in due time.

Precipitancy cries, “Do something; stir yourself; to stand still and wait is sheer idleness.” We must be doing something at once–we must do it, so we think–instead of looking to the Lord, who will not only do something, but will do everything.

Presumption boasts, “If the sea be before you, march into it, and expect a miracle.” But faith listens neither to Presumption, nor to Despair, nor to Cowardice, nor to Precipitancy, but it hears God say, “Stand still,” and immovable as a rock it stands.

“Stand still”–keep the posture of an upright man, ready for action, expecting further orders, cheerfully and patiently awaiting the directing voice; and it will not be long ere God shall say to you, as distinctly as Moses said it to the people of Israel, “Go forward.’–Spurgeon

“Be quiet! why this anxious heed
About thy tangled ways?
God knows them all. He giveth speed
And He allows delays.
‘Tis good for thee to walk by faith
And not by sight.
Take it on trust a little while.
Soon shalt thou read the mystery aright
In the full sunshine of His smile.”

In times of uncertainty, wait. Always, if you have any doubt, wait. Do not force yourself to any action. If you have a restraint in your spirit, wait until all is clear, and do not go against it.– Streams in the Desert

FAITH FACTS

May 9, 2018 By Pastor David Stone

FAITH FACTS

” In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;”- (Titus 1:2).

Faith is not working up by will power a sort of certainty that something is coming to pass, but it is seeing as an actual fact that God has said that this thing shall come to pass, and that it is true, and then rejoicing to know that it is true, and just resting because God has said it.

Faith turns the promise into a prophecy. While it is merely a promise it is contingent upon our cooperation. But when faith claims it, it becomes a prophecy, and we go forth feeling that it is something that must be done because God cannot lie.- Days of Heaven upon Earth

I hear men praying everywhere for more faith, but when I listen to them carefully, and get at the real heart of their prayer, very often it is not more faith at all that they are wanting, but a change from faith to sight.

Faith says not, “I see that it is good for me, so God must have sent it,” but, “God sent it, and so it must be good for me.”

Faith, walking in the dark with God, only prays Him to clasp its hand more closely.–Phillips Brooks

“The Shepherd does not ask of thee
Faith in thy faith, but only faith in Him;
And this He meant in saying, ‘Come to me.’
In light or darkness seek to do His will,
And leave the. work of faith to Jesus still.”— Streams in the Desert

GOD’S INSISTANCE ON JOY

May 8, 2018 By Pastor David Stone

GOD’S INSISTANCE ON JOY
“Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.”– Phil. 4:4

The Bible insists upon Joy as an element of Christian life. Christ spoke of his desire that the disciples should have his joy fulfilled in themselves. Paul exhorts Christians to rejoice always, and speaks of joy as one of the fruits of the Spirit.

Christian joy is not hilarity. One maybe sorrowful, and yet have the joy of the Lord in the heart. It is an inner joy—a fountain in the heart, supplied from heaven. Every Christian should have this joy. It belongs to the ideal of the complete Christian character. It is very evident, however, that there are many Christians who do not have it. Their spirits go up and down like the mercury in the thermometer, varying with the atmosphere. When things are pleasant—they have joy. When circumstances are hard or painful—they have no joy.

We ought to know how to get the joy of Christ. One secret is absolute devotion to the will of God. Another is serving others. Only as we learn to live the life of love, “Not to be ministered unto—but to minister” can we find true, deep joy. Every self-denial or sacrifice of love for another’s sake, adds to the Christian’s joy. We reach the ideal life—only as joy lives in our heart, and shines out in our life.– J. R. Miller

Let us never forget–-“..the joy of the LORD is your strength.”- Neh. 8:10

MY HELPER

May 7, 2018 By Pastor David Stone

MY HELPER

“So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper-–.” Heb.13:6

Life is tough. There are –

-temptations to resist

-trials to endure

-troubles to overcome

-terror to conquer

-tragedy to get through

-tasks to be done

So – it is no startling revelation when I say, – We all need help. From the cradle to the grave we need aid. Yet there are tough times when it seems that we have no hope or help. Some could help but they won’t and others would help but they can’t.

However, as Christians we are never without help. We have an ever present Helper in Christ who never fails. He is always aware of our needs, available and able to meet them. He is a Friend who sticks closer than a brother. And there is never a moment when He isn’t needed. The strongest, richest, wisest, most talented people on earth need Him.

We need Him because the number of our needs are many and the nature of our needs are of different sorts and sizes. Thankfully, regardless of the sort or size of our need we have a sure and sufficient Helper in our Savior who provides what we need. We can depend on Him because of His –

-undying love

-unlimited power

-unequaled wisdom

-unfailing faithfulness

-unparalleled promises

Knowing who He is, what He has done, can do, and promised to do gives us hope in time of need. He can give help when all seems hopeless. And my Helper can be your Helper. – HDS

CHANGE YOUR VIEW

May 6, 2018 By Pastor David Stone

CHANGE YOUR VIEW

“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”– 2 Cor.4:17-18

When times are tough, which is most of the time, we need to take action – rather than moan and groan. But what do we do? We can’t always change or control our circumstances, but we can change how we view them and how we respond to them.

One of the best ways to deal with the difficulties of the day is to focus on the future – the exceeding great and precious promises God has given. As the old adage says, “This too shall pass.” In other words, trouble is temporary. For the child of God, the best is yet to come!

Knowing things will change from bad to better to best enables us to endure the experience. Years ago I spent a lot of time traveling, preaching daily. I never enjoyed being away from home, but it was made easier knowing I would soon be home – at least for a few days. Realizing relief lies ahead enables us to endure what we’re passing through. If we spent as much time thinking about our blessings as we do about our burdens we would be a lot better off.

Had Paul focused on his difficulties he would have been doomed to despair, and he knew it. That’s why he refused to focus on the things that are temporal, choosing rather to look upon those things that are eternal. It worked for him and it will work for us. As he said in Rom.8:18 “—the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us!”  Indeed – the best is yet to come! – HDS
