THE DAYS OF THY YOUTH

September 14, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

The Word of God says, “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil  days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no  pleasure in them.”– Ecc. 12:1

The world says, “Eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die”. People tell us that we should do all the things on our “bucket list” before we kick the bucket. In other words, get as much pleasure out of life as you can before you can’t. But the Bible doesn’t support that view. Paul said, “For to me to live is Christ” (Phil. 1:21). It ought to be the same for all of us. No where do you find that we have been assigned the right to make the pursuit of pleasure the top priority in our life. We have better things to do!

The following article, I found saved in my drafts, puts this matter in the proper perspective: “It is inevitable, young person, that you will eventually come to a time—perhaps even years—when you are not even able to enjoy the pleasures of this life anymore. As  unthinkable as it may seem right now, you will not always be strong, free of pain, able to eat anything you want (that day is actually coming soon!), or even perhaps able to get out of bed.

Why does Solomon remind us of this fact? Is he just trying to burst our bubble or make us depressed? No. He is writing this admonition so that  we will begin now to pour our hearts and lives into pleasures that even old age cannot take away.

Remember now your Creator! Don’t wait until every distraction  is taken away from you and God is the only person left to talk to. Serve Him now, even in the middle of a thousand immediate pleasures that may  be tempting you away from Him. Because even now He is greater than any of these pleasures.

The truth is that, in your Creator, there are “pleasures for evermore”  (Psalm 16:11). He is not reprimanding us for enjoying the earthly  pleasures of eating, music, painlessness, or sunsets — your Creator is  the one who made these things also. But He is warning us against seeking these niceties as an end in themselves, while we are still able to  enjoy them, and forgetting about the greater pleasures that never go  away or diminish. In the presence of God is fullness of joy. Don’t allow yourself to be satisfied with anything less than full joy.”

As a young preacher living in Springfield, Mo.I had the privilege of becoming acquainted with several older and famous preachers. And I was in awe of them. When they spoke of their “good old days” and related their experiences I was thrilled, but also frustrated in a sense. I realized that their experiences were beyond my reach. Then one day I realized that I had something they didn’t have, nor would ever have. I had youth, strength, and boundless energy. Now, in the sense of age, I am where they were and some of you have what I had. You are young, strong, and have a great opportunity–please don’t waste it! “Remember now thy Creator”. –HDS

CONTENTMENT

September 13, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Let your conversation be without  covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he  hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. “–Hebrews 13:5
When it comes to contentment most of us fail more than we would like to admit. About the time we think we’ve got it something happens to remind us that we don’t. The following story is an example of what I’m talking about.

A mother was watching her young son play at the beach one day. All of a sudden, a huge wave appeared and crashed down over the boy. The water  receded, and the boy was gone.

Holding her hands to the sky, she cried, “God how could you? I’m a  wonderful mother. And I’ve tried to live a good life. Why would you take my son away from me?”

A few minutes later another huge wave appeared out of nowhere and  crashed on the beach. As the water receded, the boy stood there,  smiling, splashing around as if nothing had ever happened. A loud voice  boomed from the sky, “Okay, okay, I have returned your son. Are you  satisfied?”

She responded, “No, I’m not. Where’s the hat he was wearing?”

It’s easy to fall into the trap of seeing God’s blessings and provision as less than enough. If we have food, a roof over our heads, and a bed  to sleep in, we’re richer than most of the people who’ve ever lived.

Don’t let greed gain a stronghold in your life. Be content with God’s  provision and trust Him to continue meeting your every need.

Pray that God would give you contentment with the blessings He’s provided for you.

As humorous as this story is, this is a very serious matter. A covetous spirit is an awful sin and terrible problem.-HDS

USING DIRT FOR A LADDER

September 12, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God  meant it unto  good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people  alive. “–Gen. 50:20
This is what Joseph said to his brothers who had sold him into slavery. It is hard to imagine that he could be so loving toward them after they had subjected him to such great suffering, but he refused to let them determine what his character would be. Reading that account reminds me of this—–
Dr. Mike Minnix said, “The late Jerry Clower told a story about Uncle Versie  Ledbetter who had a mule named Della. One day Della fell into a cistern Uncle  Versie thought he had covered up but hadn’t. Uncle Versie had a problem. There  was his best mule down at the bottom of that cistern and no way he could get the  mule out of there. He didn’t want her to stay down there and starve to death, so  he decided he would get a shovel and cover her up. It would be cruel, but it  wouldn’t be as cruel and inhumane as to let Della starve to death in the bottom  of that deep cistern.Uncle Versie took a shovel full of dirt and threw it down  into the cistern and every time a shovel full of dirt hit old Della, she’d shake  the dirt off and stomp it. It wasn’t long before Della had shaken off enough  dirt and stomped it so that she was high enough to jump out of the cistern. In  this life we will have a lot of dirt thrown at us. Criticism, hardships and  trials are bound to come our way. We can react negatively to these situations,  or we can act in faith and trust God to use the problems as a blessing in our  lives. When the world throws dirt at you, use it for a ladder. If you don’t  handle it properly, the dirt could form your grave! “

WHEN BURDENS BRING BLESSINGS

September 11, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“And Paul dwelt  two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came  in unto him, Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching  those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all  confidence, no man forbidding him. “Acts 28:30-31

God’s purposes never miscarry. Paul was to go to Rome. The obstacles appeared insuperable. Even the elements seemed to be in league to prevent his reaching there.

But through all hindrances the way was opened, and at last he entered the “Eternal City.”

A prison life is not an ideal one for a missionary. But Paul’s imprisonment did not limit his usefulness. Indeed, the fact that he was thus under the protection of Rome made him safe from persecution. That was God’s way of providing for him.

We are apt to think of shut–in days as lost time. One looking at it only superficially might say, “What a pity Paul had to lose those two whole years in prison!” But perhaps no other two years of Paul’s life yielded better returns. From his prison he preached to those who came in. Then four of his epistles were written during that time, and they have been blessing the world now for nineteen hundred years.–J. R. Miller
God will not permit any troubles to come upon us, unless He has a specific plan by which great blessing can come out of the difficulty. — Peter Marshall

GROWING IN THE GLOOM

September 10, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

” But I have all, and abound: I am full…..”(Phil. 4:18).A few years ago I wrote an article about this, but here is the article that inspired it. John Henry Jowett wrote:

In one of my garden books there is a chapter with a very interesting  heading, “Flowers that Grow in the Gloom.” It deals with those patches  in a garden which never catch the sunlight. And my guide tells me the  sort of flowers which are not afraid of these dingy corners–may rather  like them and flourish in them.
And there are similar things in the world of the spirit. They come out  when material circumstances become stern and severe. They grow in the  gloom. How can we otherwise explain some of the experiences of the  Apostle Paul?
Here he is in captivity at Rome. The supreme mission of his life  appears to be broken. But it is just in this besetting dinginess that  flowers begin to show their faces in bright and fascinating glory. He  may have seen them before, growing in the open road, but never as they  now appeared in incomparable strength and beauty. Words of promise  opened out their treasures as he had never seen them before.
Among those treasures were such wonderful things as the grace of  Christ, the love of Christ, the joy and peace of Christ; and it seemed  as though they needed an “encircling gloom” to draw out their secret and their inner glory. At any rate the realm of gloom became the home of  revelation, and Paul began to realize as never before the range and  wealth of his spiritual inheritance.
Who has not known men and women who, when they arrive at seasons of  gloom and solitude, put on strength and hopefulness like a robe? You may imprison such folk where you please; but you shut up their treasure  with them. You cannot shut it out. You may make their material lot a  desert, but “the wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad, and  the desert shall rejoice and blossom as the rose.”
“Every flower, even the fairest, has its shadow beneath it as it basks in the sunlight.” Where there is much light there is also much shade.(Streams in the Desert)
