GOD’S HAND AND HEART

July 16, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy.” Micah 7:18

God takes delight in showing of mercy. He takes no pleasure in giving His people up to adversity. Mercy and kindness flow from Him freely and naturally. He is never severe, never harsh. He never stings us–but when He is sadly provoked by us.

God’s hand sometimes may lie very hard upon His people–when His heart, His affections at those very times may be yearning towards them. “Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a pleasant child? for since I spake against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my bowels are troubled for him; I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the LORD. ” Jeremiah 31:20

No man can tell the heart of God–by His hand.
God’s hand of mercy may be open to those against whom His heart is set–as you see in the rich fool and Dives.
And His hand of severity may lie hard upon those on whom He has set His heart–as you may see in Job and Lazarus.

“When you can’t trace His hand–trust His heart!”–Thomas Brooks

CHARACTER

July 15, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

Reputation is what a man’s neighbors and friends think of him.
Character is what the man IS.

Character is personal. It is not a possession we can share with someone else. We can give a hungry person part of our loaf of bread; we can divide our money with one who needs it; but character is something we cannot give away or transmit. The brave soldier cannot share his courage with the trembling recruit who fights by his side in the battle. The pure, gentle woman cannot give part of her purity and gentleness, to the defiled and hardened woman she meets.

Character is our own — a part of our very being. It grows in us over the years. Acts repeated become habits, and character is made up in the long run, of those habits which have been repeated so often, that they become a permanent part of our lives.

Sow a thought — and you will reap an act;
sow an act — and you will reap a habit;
sow a habit — and you will reap a character;
sow character — and you will reap a destiny!

As the tree falls — so must it lie;
As the man lives — so must he die!
As a man dies — such must he be;
All through the ages of eternity!

— J. R. Miller

LEANING ON JESUS

July 14, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”–John 8:36

The renowned magician and escape artist, Houdini, could get out of any set of handcuffs, or any strait jacket that was ever put on him. In fact, he could release himself from almost any enclosure in less than one minute. Only once did he fail. That strange incident occurred when he was touring the British Isles. Arriving at a small town, he agreed to exhibit his ability by escaping from the local jail. The cell door was so ordinary looking that he smiled at the simplicity of the task. On the given signal he began to use all the terrific speed and dexterity he possessed to effect his release. To his great surprise, he was unable to pick the lock! Frantically he tried every device he knew, but nothing happened. For two more hours he worked feverishly. Finally, completely exhausted, he fell against the door and lamented his defeat. Immediately it sprang open. His frustration had been due to the fact that it had never been locked at all! How frequently, by a similar ruse, Satan has deluded poor sinners who are seeking to find a way to open the door of salvation! They work, they cry, they fret, they pray — trying in every way possible to bring release to their captive souls. Yet it is only when they fall exhausted from their own efforts, and rest their all against the “Door” — the Lord Jesus Christ — that they find the immediate release they so desperately seek.

You who today are weeping and straining every nerve to escape the clutches of Satan, just let go, and let God do that which your feverish trying will never accomplish. For having done all that is necessary to please God, the Savior now provides the only way to peace and Heaven. Lovingly He still invites men to stop struggling and to enter by faith into the liberating joys of His free salvation!(Copied)

Life’s uncertain, death is sure;
Sin’s the cause; Christ’s the cure!
Man can’t do it; Hell’s in store;
God says, “Trust”; Christ’s the Door!

A SOFT PILLOW FOR A TIRED HEART

July 13, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.”–Romans 8:28–30

Evangelist R. A. Torrey said, “Romans 8:28 is a soft pillow for a tired heart.” He was pointing out that when things go wrong, we can find rest in the wonderful truth that God still has a plan for our lives and has promised to make every pain, hardship, and loss work together for good. Nothing takes God by surprise, and nothing undermines His power to bring about His purposes in the lives of those who love Him. While God certainly is not the cause of evil, He is able to use even the most difficult and demanding circumstances of life to work out His ultimate plan—that we become like His Son Jesus Christ.

The great hymn writer Fanny Crosby lost her sight when she was just six weeks old because of a doctor’s error in treating her. Years later she said, “I have heard that this physician never ceased expressing his regret at the occurrence, and that it was one of the sorrows of his life. But if I could meet him now, I would say, ‘Thank you, thank you’—over and over again—‘for making me blind’…although it may have been a blunder on the physician’s part, it was no mistake of God’s.”

The trials of life are meant to accomplish a purpose. God is constantly working on us, molding us into people who are more and more like Jesus. Often that process requires difficulty. The challenge for us is to not lose sight of the end while we are in the midst of the struggle. God never fails, and He will continue to work until His purpose is achieved.

When you remember God is in control, you can face whatever comes with faith and joy.–Daily in the Word

AN EASY QUESTION

July 12, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?”–Jer.32:27

There are many tough questions in life, but this isn’t one of them. This is as easy as it gets. If you know the Lord you know the answer. You know from the testimony of His Word, from observing His mighty works, and from personal experience.

I love the old Stuart Hamblen song that says, “It is no secret what God can do”. That’s something you need to think about everyday. Were I to ask, “What are you facing? What’s your problem or need?”, I would get a wide variety of answers. The nature of man’s problems vary greatly, but we all have one thing in common– we all need help. Sadly some folks are unaware of what God can do. Others are doubtful about what God might do. They feel hopeless. That’s tragic. At this moment some of you are carrying a heavy burden all day and are so troubled that you can’t sleep at night.

I don’t know what your problem is–whether it’s physical, spiritual, emotional. domestic, vocational, or financial, but I know God and I know He is able. With Him all things are possible. You will never face anything too big for God. He can handle anything. We have proof of that. That doesn’t mean God will do as you desire. He might have a better plan. Other than what God has promised we don’t know what God will do, but we do know what He can do.

Knowing the greatness of His love we have good reason to believe He will use His power to meet our needs if He deems it best. Knowing His wisdom we know that if God has a plan different than ours, it is a better plan. There is no greater encouragement than knowing God is able, believing He cares, and confident that that He will even use the bad for good. That’s why we sing “What a Mighty God we serve!”. Take heart my friend, there is nothing too hard for God!–HDS
