THE WORTH OF WISDOM

January 28, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Happy is the man that findeth wisdom….” — Prov 3:13

It is worth our while to study what the Bible says about happiness, and how to get it. All people want to be happy–but most miss the mark.

Yet those who follow the Bible rules for happiness, will never be disappointed. “Happy is the man who finds wisdom.”

Wisdom is a large word. It is not merely knowledge. A man may know so much, that he is a walking encyclopedia, and yet not be happy. He may pursue knowledge into all its nooks and hiding-places, dig it out of the rocks, extract it from the minerals, gather it from flower and plant, draw it down from among the stars–and yet not find happiness. Knowing a great many things–does not make one wise!

Wisdom is knowledge applied to life. He has found wisdom–who has learned to live well. To live well—is to live according to God’s laws, which are summed up in one word, love–love to God and love to man. No one is happy who does not recognize God and do His will. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”

Likewise, no one can be really happy who does not love his fellow-men. Happiness never is found in selfishness. Those who seek happiness in thinking, toiling, and striving only for themselves–will have a vain quest! It never lies that way. He only has found wisdom–who has found rest in Christ.(Copied)

This being true should we not then seek wisdom with our whole heart, even more than health, wealth, and fame? God has provided all we need to be happy, but we have to appropriate what He makes available. That’s why it has been said, “You are just as happy as you choose to be”. Wisdom is the way! –HDS

KNOWING VS DOING

January 26, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.“– James 1:22

That is just the trouble with a great many people–they can answer correctly. They know all about their duty. They can repeat with glib tongue, text after text of Scripture. They can recite catechism and creed without missing a word, and like to boast of their thorough familiarity with these sacred formularies. But it is the doing that they fall short in.

They know the commandments–but they fail to keep them. They can quote any number of Bible texts about honesty and truthfulness–yet they are neither honest nor truthful. They like to talk about the love of Christ, which is meek, gentle, patient, and compassionate–but they do not think of getting any of this spirit into their own life!

They recite texts about sending the gospel to the heathen, and make speeches about saving the lost–but neither give money nor make any personal effort to save others!

If doing were as easy as knowing–how blessed we would all be! Would it not be a beautiful thing for us–to try to live all the duty we know?– Copied

“If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” John 13:17

FORMING FAITH

January 26, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.”–Job 22:21

The situation is serious, your flesh is frail, and your heart is fearful. What do you do? Facing our fears we are forced to see our need of faith, and we long for it, but fail to find it. Why? We try to muster up the courage to confront the challenge, but we keep coming up short. We try to “keep a stiff upper lip”, “scotch our feet”, “square our shoulders”, etc. but fear has us in its grip– a strangle-hold, squeezing the life out of us. And we can’t find faith. Where is it?

A.W.Tozer wrote: “How then shall unbelief be cured and faith be strengthened? Surely not by straining to believe the Scriptures, as some do. Not by a frantic effort to believe the promises of God. Not by gritting our teeth and determining to exercise faith by an act of the will. All this has been tried–and it never helps. To try thus to superinduce faith is to violate the laws of the mind and to do violence to the simple psychology of the heart. What is the answer? Job told us, Acquaint thyself with him and be at peace; and Paul said, So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. These two verses show the way to a strong and lasting faith: Get acquainted with God through reading the Scriptures, and faith will come naturally. This presupposes that we come to the Scriptures humbly, repudiating self-confidence and opening our minds to the sweet operations of the Spirit. Otherwise stated: Faith comes effortlessly to the heart as we elevate our conceptions of God by a prayerful digestion of His Word. And such faith endures, for it is grounded upon the Rock.”

Dear friend, you can’t just wait until it’s needed and then find faith, like a pill in a bottle. Faith is something that is formed over time as we feed on God’s Word (Rom. 10:17). The crisis is sure to come so it is essential that we prepare for it by giving our undivided attention to the Word of God. Some of you are struggling and unable to cope with your crisis simply because you have neglected to do what is needed to build your faith so as to face fears such as this. However, it is not too late to start. Your experience is evidence that you can’t escape what has come upon you, but you can endure it. Although you might be struggling due to your past neglect, you can shift your focus from your failure and fears to the Word of God and your faith will begin to grow, enabling you to face the future with a faith that gives you a peace that passeth all understanding. Don’t make the same mistake twice!  –HDS

AS MOTHS NEAR A CANDLE

January 24, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“
Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity;…” Psalm 119:37

Dear friends, do not gaze upon any sin . . .
for looking breeds longing,
and longing begets lusting,
and lusting brings sinning!

Keep your eyes right–and you may keep your heart right.

If that first woman had not looked upon the forbidden tree and seen “that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise,” she would not have plucked and eaten the forbidden fruit–and we would not have been the children of sin and sorrow!

O friends, if we begin to look upon iniquity, we shall almost certainly fall! There are some sins that we poor, frail creatures cannot endure to look at. We are as moths near a burning candle–the only safety for us is to get out of the room and fly into the open air. But if we go near the candle–we shall certainly burn our wings and, perhaps, even destroy ourselves!

Just so, we must take care that we do not get used to sin. I believe that even the common reading in the newspapers of accounts of evil things is defiling to us. If we habitually read such things, we shall come, at last, to think less and less of the coarser forms of vice than we ought to do.

Nothing can keep us away from the fangs of sin, like falling into the embraces of Christ. Looking unto Jesus, is the great remedy against looking unto sin!

Turn away my eyes from vanity, my Lord, by filling them full with a vision of Yourself and holding me spellbound with that grandest spectacle that eyes of men, or angels, or even of God, Himself ever saw–the spectacle of God Incarnate bearing our sin in His own body on the Cross!

Keep your eyes fixed there–and all will be well. —Charles Spurgeon

JESUS OUR EXAMPLE

January 23, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: who, being in the form of God…made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant“– Philippians 2:5-7

Let this mind be in you.The Christian life is not merely intellectual assent to a list of orthodox tenets. It is internalizing the teaching and example of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

And as we look at Christ through the infallible lens of God’s Word the Bible, we are reminded that his way is up-side-down (or rather right-side-up) from the way of this world. Jesus did not work his way to the top; he started at the top, as God himself, and yet chose to humble himself for the sake of his people.

Here was a self-made man: Jesus, who is due all glory and honor, made himself of no reputation. Jesus, who is King of Kings and Lord of Lords, took on himself the role of a servant. How sad and ironic that most of us spend all our energy in life striving to do the exact opposite.

This is doubtless why Jesus, from the outset, told those who admired him that they would have to deny themselves in order to become his disciple. Yet so many Christians want to claim discipleship, but without the sacrifice, without the self-denial, without the humility.

Beloved, let this mind be in you — may you internalize the reality of who Christ is, of how he lived, and of what he demands of us.– (A Good Thing)
