A WORD TO THE WEARY

June 2, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you”– Isaiah 46:4

We’ve all heard it–“Old age ain’t for sissies”. And if you are there you know it’s true. While there might be a few rare birds who are an exception to the rule, most old people find life to be more and more difficult. That’s what makes our text so precious. While God doesn’t exempt us from suffering He enables us to endure it. Having this promise encourages us to press on rather than to give up.

An article from the Baptist Bible Hour says, “Even to your old age I am he.” Even when you look in the mirror and see yourself changing—more wrinkles, less hair, fewer teeth—even then, I am still he. I am still the unchanging, unchangeable God.

It was I, God says, Who carried you out of the womb in your infancy; and it is I, He reminds us, that will still be here for you when you grow old. Though your strength and energy may diminish, I am still able to bear you. Though your hair may become gray, I remain the same.

“I will carry, and will deliver you.” Rather than calling the end of our road death, God calls it deliverance. Why? Because when God is carrying you, death is only the doorway to an everlasting life.

Here is the summary of God’s promise: just as I made you to begin with, I am able and willing to carry you and bear your burdens, until I finally deliver you into a carefree, burden-free, never-ending life. Because I am unchanging, I will always have the strength to carry you, and because I am unchanging I will always fulfill all my promises.

Have you committed yourself to the everlasting, unchanging arms of your Creator and Lord? His arms are the only ones strong enough to last through this life, and long enough to deliver you to the next.

THY WILL BE DONE

June 1, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“…Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”–Matt.6:10; “…not as I will, but as thou wilt.“–Matt. 26:39

I’ve heard preachers say we shouldn’t pray, “Thy will be done” unless we know what it is. They claim that we ought to know what to ask for and that we are not praying in faith unless we do. Well, they are evidently a lot smarter than I am, because there are times when I don’t know what to ask for. I have found myself in a quandary many times when all I knew to do was to say, “Thy will be done“. Sorry if my ignorance offends you, but I don’t have all the answers. And I’m not the only one.Archibald Brown (1844-1922) who was pastor of the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London wrote:

“O, beloved, I wish that we knew more of the joy of perfect and complete surrender to God. It is our will clashing with our Father’s will, which makes us fretful. If only our will were one with His–it would be utterly impossible for us to ever be anything else than serene, calm and happy. Within our soul would dwell a depth of calm contentedness. Having no choice of our own, the soul would find equal joy in all. The “Nevertheless, not My will–but may Your will be done!” would prove perpetual music in the heart.

A soul thus surrendered, could make no choice if it were offered. If the Lord were to say, “My child, which will you have: health or sickness; a long life–or one snapped in two like a broken column; wealth–or poverty?” The soul would answer, “Father, I cannot say, because I do not know Your will. Tell me Your will, and I will tell You my choice, for my soul is Yours, as well as all else. I refer the case back again to You, my Father, and cry:
I dare not choose my lot,
I would not, if I might!
But You choose for me, O my God,
So shall I walk aright.”

I know that this is a high standard to attain, and as I speak, I feel I am condemning myself in every other word. But shall we ignore a thing because it is above us? No, let us aim high, even if we do not reach the mark; for though our arrow falls short of the target, it will fly higher than if aimed at a lower object.“

A PRAYER FOR LOVE

May 31, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

In light of the great message Sunday evening by Bro. Mohammad Yamout I couldn’t help but think of this following prayer by an unknown author:

Heavenly Father,

Help me remember that the jerk who cut me off in traffic last night is a single mother who worked nine hours that day and was rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with her children.

Bring to my mind often that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who can’t make change correctly at McDonalds is a worried 19-year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester.

Remind me, Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the same spot every day (who really ought to get a job!) is a slave to addictions that I can only imagine in my worst nightmare.

Cause me to reflect that the old couple, walking annoyingly slow through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping together.

Make me understand, Holy Spirit, that even though my neighbors and I have competing political signs in our yards, that a person’s assurance of heaven comes from Your Word by Your grace alone, not the empty promises of political hacks pandering for a vote.

Heavenly Father, remind me each day that, of all the gifts you give me, the greatest gift is love. It is not enough to share that love with those I hold dear. Open my heart not just to those who are close to me, but to all humanity. Let me be slow in judgment and quick with forgiveness and patience and empathy and love.

Amen.

REMEMBERING

May 30, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

Teresa Philyaw is mayor of Hiram, a small town west of Atlanta, Georgia. She planned a display of seventy-nine white crosses along Highway 92 as a way to honor the seventy-nine Paulding County residents who died in America’s wars. The mayor explained: “We wanted to make sure that they weren’t forgotten. We also wanted their families to know that our hearts still bleed for them.”
However, an unnamed resident called Hiram’s city manager to complain about the religious nature of the display. So the city manager decided to remove the crosses, even though this symbol is used to mark American military graves all over the world. After a public outcry, the city council met last Tuesday and the crosses were back in place Wednesday morning.
Memorial Day..we honor the 1.1 million Americans who died while serving in the U.S. military. Why is it so important for us to remember those who died in the service of our country? Consider two facts.
One: Remembering the past is vital to living in the present.
The children of Israel were camped on the east bank of the flooded Jordan River, with no way to cross into their Promised Land. So God send his priests to stand in the river, then he miraculously stopped its flow. Before the nation crossed over, the Lord instructed Joshua to send twelve men, one from each tribe, into the river bed where the priests stood. They were to collect twelve stones, then use them to build a lasting monument to this miracle (Joshua 4:1–7). Their purpose: “These stones shall be to the people of Israel a memorial forever” (v. 7).
When we remember those who went before us, we are called to affirm the values for which they lived and died. And we are challenged to emulate their sacrifice with our own commitment.
Two: Remembering those who have fallen is vital to serving those who serve.
“No soldier left behind” has been the commitment of our military to its service personnel across our history. This policy not only empowers the military to rescue the imprisoned and return the fallen—it also encourages present service members with the knowledge that they will be cared for in the same way.
Memorial Day is an extension of this commitment. As we remember those who died for our country, we signal present-day military personnel that their sacrifice is not forgotten. In this way we “remember the days of old” and “consider the years of many generations” (Deuteronomy 32:7). And we support those who serve our nation today.
How can you make Memorial Day significant this weekend?
Soldiers have been hard at work placing 230,000 U.S. flags at Arlington National Cemetery, part of the annual “Flags-In” ceremony. Join their commitment by making time to visit a military cemetery in your area. Place a flag and stop to offer a prayer of gratitude. If you have children in your home, explain Memorial Day to them. Include them in your activities of remembrance this weekend. And find a way to thank those who are serving in our military today and their families.
Minot Judson Savage: “The brave die never, though they sleep in dust: Their courage nerves a thousand living men.” May his words be true for us today.–Jim Denison

THINKING ABOUT HEAVEN

May 29, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:“–Phil. 3:20

An unknown author once said, “As a boy, I thought of heaven as a city with domes, spires, and beautiful streets, inhabited by angels. By and by my little brother died, and I thought of heaven much as before, but with one inhabitant that I knew. Then another died, and then some of my acquaintances, so in time I began to think of heaven as containing several people that I knew. But it was not until one of my own little children died that I began to think I had treasure in heaven myself. Afterward another went, and yet another. By that time I had so many acquaintances and children in heaven that I no more thought of it as a city merely with streets of gold but as a place full of inhabitants. Now there are so many loved ones there I sometimes think I know more people in heaven than I do on earth.”

Indeed it is true, if we live long enough the chances are good that we will have more friends in heaven than on earth– but that’s not the best part. The thing that makes this so wonderful is that God’s people never meet for the last time! Some day there will be a glorious reunion and all God’s children shall be gathered home where they will rejoice through the endless ages. I am typing with with tears in my eyes as I am singing–

“And while the ages roll
I’ll keep on praising Him,
And my voice shall never tire or grow old;
And my song shall ever be,
“Praise the Lamb who died for me,”
And I’ll sing it while ages shall roll.”

Dear friend if you have never trusted Christ as your Lord and Savior I pray you will do so today. It is only through faith in the shed blood of Christ that you can have the hope of heaven and the blessed assurance that you will see your loved ones again. I hope to see you there! — HDS
