DEATH IS YOUR SERVANT

April 23, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Whether…the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours“– 1 Corinthians 3:22

What a strange thing to say. How can Paul claim with a straight face that everything—even death—has been given to God’s people and belongs to them?

It certainly does not feel as though the world belongs to us, that our present life is completely under our control, or that the future is ours for the taking. Least of all, death does not ever feel to be mastered or owned or tamed; more than anything else, death reminds us of just how frail we are and what little power we have over our surroundings.

And yet Paul claims that they are all yours, if you are Christ’s (3:23). Even death has been made a servant to the people of God. How can this be?

The truth is that we, in ourselves, do not have autonomous control over our life or our death; but the truth is also that Christ has—through His death and resurrection—brought even our greatest enemies into subjection and made them to serve us for our good.

Death, for instance, has been subdued; instead of acting as the jaws of fate to consume us, it has now become the door.. to renew us. Whereas death was once to be greatly feared, as the result of sin entering into the world, it is now made an occasion for rejoicing, as the vehicle that brings us into the presence and likeness of Christ.

Life, through Christ, is yours, dear believer. And, yes, even death is yours, to serve you for your good and for God’s glory. Rejoice today, then, in the possessions that are yours in Christ.(Copied)

BE NOT AFRAID

April 22, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night.“Psalm 91:5

What is this terror? It may be the cry of fire, or the noise of thieves, or fancied appearances, or the shriek of sudden sickness or death. We live in the world of death and sorrow, we may therefore look for ills as well in the night-watches as beneath the glare of the broiling sun. Nor should this alarm us, for be the terror what it may, the promise is that the believer shall not be afraid. Why should he? Let us put it more closely, why should we? God our Father is here, and will be here all through the lonely hours; he is an almighty Watcher, a sleepless Guardian, a faithful Friend. Nothing can happen without his direction, for even hell itself is under his control. Darkness is not dark to him. He has promised to be a wall of fire around his people–and who can break through such a barrier? Worldlings may well be afraid, for they have an angry God above them, a guilty conscience within them, and a yawning hell beneath them; but we who rest in Jesus are saved from all these through rich mercy. If we give way to foolish fear we shall dishonour our profession, and lead others to doubt the reality of godliness. We ought to be afraid of being afraid, lest we should vex the Holy Spirit by foolish distrust. Down, then, ye dismal forebodings and groundless apprehensions, God has not forgotten to be gracious, nor shut up his tender mercies; it may be night in the soul, but there need be no terror, for the God of love changes not. Children of light may walk in darkness, but they are not therefore cast away, nay, they are now enabled to prove their adoption by trusting in their heavenly Father as hypocrites cannot do.–Charles Spurgeon

“Though the night be dark and dreary,
Darkness cannot hide from thee;
Thou art he, who, never weary,
Watchest where thy people be.”

DIVINE DISCONTENT

April 21, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” Matthew 5:6

One of the worst and most common problems among Christians is that of being content with things as they are when things are not as they should be. For that reason they have a hard time understanding or appreciating these words by J. R. Miller:

“The ideal Christian life is one . . .
of unquenchable thirst,
of bottomless yearning,
of divine discontent —
wooed ever on by visions of holier living, higher joy, and new attainments.

The trouble with too many of us, is that we are too satisfied with ourselves as we are. We have attained a small measure of peace, of holiness, of faith, of joy, of knowledge of Christ — and we are not hungering for the larger possible rewards. Pray for discontent with your spiritual state! With all the infinite possibilities of spiritual life before you, do not sit down on a little patch of dusty ground at the foot of the mountain, in restful contentment. Do not be content until you reach the mountain’s summit!”

“Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:12

GOD’S TIMING

April 20, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.“–2 Timothy 4:6

Think about the timing necessary to keep our solar system stable. Every 24 hours the earth spins on its axis. Every 365.26 days the earth orbits the sun. The moon orbits the earth every 27.3 days. In premodern days, the certainty of those numbers formed the basis of calendars, agriculture, navigation, and more. While calculations today may be easier with computers, those calculations still depend on the timing of the solar system.

The psalmist David didn’t know what we know about the cosmos, but he knew that God was responsible for it. He was amazed at the “heavens” and “the moon and the stars, which [ God had ] ordained” (Psalm 8:3). In the face of such majesty he wondered how God could be concerned about a mere human like himself. But the same God who times the movement of the planets also times the days of our lives (Psalm 139:16). With that confidence, the apostle Paul could be at peace when he realized that the end of his life was near (2 Timothy 4:6).

If you trust that the sun will rise on schedule tomorrow morning, trust the God who keeps it on schedule—and ordains the timing of your life as well.– Turning Point

God has plans for this world, not problems. There is never a panic in heaven.–W. Ian Thomas

I believe it was Lincoln who responded to an inquiry about his worried look by explaining, “I’m in a hurry and God isn’t”. We need to remember that. For the Christian the best is yet to come, but until then we need to wait patiently for the Lord to give us that which we have been longing for. It will be worth the wait!

A STRENGTH INFUSION

April 19, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength”– Isaiah 40:29
It is not hard to find someone who will give support to the powerful, attention to the famous, notice to the remarkable, or recognition to the accomplished. Virtually everyone is willing to jump on the bandwagon of some well-known, talented, or beautiful person.
But God gives encouragement to the faint. He gives strength to the exhausted. He does not join the crowds hurrying after celebrities; He seeks out the broken-hearted and the overlooked and gives them the greatest honor imaginable — His attention and His love.
This is not because God is a cosmic talent-scout, finding the individual diamonds in the many roughs throughout the world. It is to those who truly have no merit, who can stake no claim to His assets, who have no might that He sends reinforcements of strength and provision. It is God’s grace, not our value, that draws Him to hurting, helpless humanity.
While this is humbling—even humiliating—to realize, it is also liberating and invigorating. We can let all our collected claims of good works and inherent worth fall around our feet as we reach out to a God Who only heals the sick, Who only mends the broken, Who only gives strength to the powerless.
How do you see yourself? It doesn’t matter how others might describe you; perhaps they even consider you among the great, the mighty, the successful. But are you broken-hearted and helpless before the Lord? If so, then prepare for a strength infusion from the most High Himself.(Copied)
