SPREADING THE WORD TO THE WORLD

March 4, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them. And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent. And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.”–Luke 4:42–44

The people in Capernaum would have been delighted for Jesus to stay with them. In fact, they begged Him not to leave when it was time for Him to go. They realized that they had benefited greatly by His presence. Yet even at the very beginning of His ministry, Jesus made it clear that the priority of His life and work would be to reach as many people as possible with the gospel. Jesus recognized that He had been given this mission by His Father and as a result, He planned His life around what God had in mind for Him to do: “And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him” (John 8:29).

What was true of Jesus should be true of us as well. We should plan and shape our lives around what matters to God rather than what matters to us. And nothing is more central to God’s purpose and will for our lives than telling others about salvation in Jesus Christ. When the Jewish rulers called the disciples before them to try to make them stop preaching about Jesus, they had to admit the effectiveness of God’s people carrying out God’s plan. “Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine…” (Acts 5:28).

God’s plan to reach the world has not changed—it is still for His children to proclaim the gospel to everyone and to follow His will rather than our own.– Dr. Paul Chappell

LOVE HURTS

March 3, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Mine eyes do fail with tears, my bowels are troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the children and the sucklings swoon in the streets of the city.“–Lam. 2:11

A good portion of the Bible has to do with God and man pleading with others to turn from their wicked ways and flee from the destruction toward which they are headed. Even so a large part of every pastor’s time is spent doing the same. And, although much needed, it can be a very painful experience.

It is heartbreaking watching people wreck and ruin their lives. And, try as you may, you just cannot stop some people from doing so. They are determined to live as they please without any regard for what pleases God. Not only do they resist your efforts and reject your warnings, they resent what they believe is your intrusion into their life. That leaves you brokenhearted. You know from experience that God’s Word is true, God’s will is right, and God’s way is best, but you are unable to convince them that it is so.

This disappointing experience has a way of draining your energy, dragging you down, and deepening your depression to the point that you feel like quitting. That’s what happened to Jeremiah (Jer. 20:7-13). And, make no mistake about it, if it could happen to him it could happen to you or me. Although a noble trait, there is a high price to pay for a tender heart. Jeremiah, the weeping prophet, was overwhelmed because he could not bear to see the destruction of his people (Lam.3:48). That is a feeling well known by many pastors, parents and others. To see those you love hurt hurts! To see them hurt by things over which they have no control is painful, to see them do it to themselves is even more so. Self-destruction is senseless.

However, as disheartening as this is we must not quit. Although our efforts prove to be in vain in some instances, our persistence will prove profitable in others. While we can’t reach everybody, we can reach somebody, and that makes the effort worthwhile! Don’t give up!

CHILDREN OF LIGHT

March 2, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:“– Ephesians 5:8.

We live in a troubled world and we tend to be troubled by it. We allow our difficulties to depress us. We develop an attitude of despair–all is dark and gloomy. Rather than allowing our problems to become a means of showing others what great things God can do, we leave the impression that God doesn’t exist, doesn’t care, or can’t help. That’s sad. It is better that be what we are– “children of light”.

J. R. Miller wrote,”The tendency to morbidness which shows itself in some people, is most unhealthy. In some it is habitual; a disposition to gloom has been permitted to have its way so long—that now the feelings run, even unimpeded, in melancholy grooves. In others it is incidental, caused by loss or trial, the life requiring some time to react after its shock of grief, and rebound to its wonted cheerfulness. The latter experience is not so unwholesome, because it is transient; but the former, wherever it exists, should be treated as a mental disease, and subjected to the wisest processes of cure. It is destructive of the life’s beauty. It mars one’s usefulness. It grieves God, for it is practical unbelief.

Why should one persist in refusing the blessing of God’s bounteous sunshine, and walk only in gloomy paths? Why should one close windows and doors and live in darkness—when God’s glory of light flows everywhere? The morbid person should heroically set himself the task of getting rid of his miserable gloom! It may take time; for when darkness has become ingrained in the soul—it can yield but slowly to the influence of light. Yet the task should be achieved. To stay in the shades of melancholy is most unchristian.”

BEGIN AT HOME

March 1, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. And he brought him to Jesus… “–John 1:41-42

Nobody told Andrew to go after his brother; it was the impulse of his own heart that sent him so quickly away on his love-errand, after he had found Christ himself. The lesson lies on the surface. “Even a dog,” says one, “that has had its leg mended will bring other limping dogs to the man that was kind to it.” One who has been cured of some disease will bring all his afflicted friends to the physician who cured him.

You have had your soul saved. All about you are those whose souls are lost, as yours was a little while ago. How many have you brought to Jesus? Do you think you can hold up clean hands, free from the blood of souls, unless you try very earnestly to bring some others to Christ? Notice that it was his own brother that Andrew brought—Home, then, is the place where we ought to begin. Yet, strange to say, it is the last place many of us speak about Christ. The old proverb has it, “The shoemaker’s wife is always the worst shod.” Often it is the preacher’s or the teacher’s own home that gets the least benefit and blessing from his messages of love, or from his Chirstian life and influence. Surely the dearest in the world to you are home’s precious ones; go first to them, therefore, if any of them are unsaved, and try to bring them to your Saviour, that they may find what you have found. Of course you will not stop with home; let the circle widen until your influence reaches as widely as possible; but do not overlook home and those nearest and dearest to you while you stretch out your hands toward the heathen in China or in Africa, or even reach over the fence to save a neighbout next door. That is a mistake some people make.–J R Miller

HELP

February 29, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.“–Isa. 41:13

Some questions are truly tough, but some are really easy. Perhaps the easiest of all would be this one–” Do you need help?“. I suspect we would all answer “Yes!” and we would have a long list of things wherein we need it. Help is one need we all have in common, and thankfully it is available! Among the many “exceeding great and precious promises” found in the Bible one of the most precious is found in our text, “..I will help thee”. The attraction of this is found in the fact that we are weak and needy. Over and over we find ourselves in situations that push us to limit, forcing us to see our need of help. It is wonderful when we find it. However, there are times when our requests appear to be ignored, denied, or delayed, and we wonder why.

One of the problems related to this is that we tend to think of help as coming in the form of change. We ask for help and we want things to be different, better, or easier. When the situation doesn’t change we assume that God isn’t helping us. God, however, often helps us by empowering us to endure rather than by eliminating the problem. He wants us to endure rather than escape. Instead of changing the situation He changes the saints—enabling us to be content in our circumstances.

God knows what we don’t — difficulties are essential to our development. Just as wind strengthens the oak tree, the storms of adversity can make us stronger, better, and more productive. Although we don’t understand it or sense it, every drop of difficulty is measured out by the wisdom of our all wise, ever loving heavenly Father.

Until the Lord comes to reign and removes the curse from the earth things will be less than perfect. And as long as we are permitted to sin we will have to contend with the consequences. Until we receive a glorified body we will have to live with what we’ve got–aches, pains and all. The change we desire won’t come until the time appointed by God. Until that glorious day, when we will be delivered from sin and suffering, God allows us to be subjected to hardships. Until then we have to deal with unhealthy bodies, unrelenting pressure, unreasonable people, etc. Until then we must trust Him to help us, and He never fails to do as He promised. He cannot lie and He will not fail. His grace is sufficient for every need. So– instead of thinking “When will I get out of this?”, we should be thinking “What will I get out of this?”. That’s what kept Paul going when God refused to remove his thorn (2 Cor. 12:9).

Perhaps these words by Tim Hansel sums this up best. He said, “I have prayed hundreds, if not thousands of times for the Lord to heal me…and He finally healed me of the need to be healed”. As my friend Dennis Maxey said when he learned he was dying, “God is God and He is going to do what He wants to do— and that’s alright with me”. Help doesn’t always come in the form we desire or expect, but it comes. “Fear not” He will help you!
