MARY’S MESSAGE

December 25, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. For with God nothing shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.“—Luke 1:35-38

In this message to Mary we also see a message from Mary. Although she does not address us personally, her example speaks volumes as to how we ought to respond to God’s will for our lives. This is set before us in an article from Senior Living, which says—

Imagine this—a young girl, betrothed to a reputable man, finds herself pregnant and the father is not her beloved. Two thousand years ago, this potential scandal could have cost her a reputation and maybe even her life. However, Mary was called out by the Lord. Probably no older than 15 years of age, she certainly had no job and no intentions of becoming a mother just yet. But God entrusted her with a great responsibility.

When the angel of the Lord appeared to her and assigned her this task, she didn’t respond as most would by saying, “But I can’t take on that responsibility, Lord. I am about to get married. I just want to enjoy time with my husband right now. Please pass this assignment off to someone else! I don’t want you to call me to do this!”

No, instead Mary willingly obeyed the Lord and submitted to His will for her life. Many people confuse Mary’s status—some put her on the same pedestal as Jesus and some even worship her as they would the Lord. But Mary was simply the woman God called to bear the Messiah and the woman who was willing to carry out the task He laid before her.

As believers, we must learn the meaning of surrender. When God places a call on your life, there is no room for questions or hesitation. Is God calling you to some specific task? Are you willing to surrender all to obey Him? You must simply say, “I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said.” Take with you the very valuable lessons of surrender, compassion, obedience, and love displayed in the Christmas story.

Ask the Lord to show you His will for your life, and pray that He would help you to be a man or woman that is completely surrendered and obedient to Him.

CHRISTMAS MEANS THE MASTER

December 24, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

This Christ whom the disciples called Master is He who, in eternity, rested on the bosom of the Father without a mother, and in time rested on the bosom of a mother without a father—Son of Man and Son of God, just as old as His Heavenly Father and ages older than His earthly mother. He who was in the manger later mastered disease into health, blindness into sight, deafness into hearing, lameness into suppleness and strength of muscles, leprosy into cleanness, storms into calm, scarcity of bread into food plenteous, dumbness into speech, death into life and grace into resurrection glory.

He mastered sin, Satan, suffering, death, the grave and Hell. And through Him we can be more than conquerors, mastering all things that mar proper observance of Christmas, mastering the mind so that it thinks God’s thoughts after Him, mastering Satan by resistance until he flees from us, mastering our bodies until we shall be “always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body” (II Cor. 4:10) to the glory of Him who “being in the form of God…made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant…and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross” (Phil. 2:6–8).

At this Christmas season, every heart ought to say, “Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift” (II Cor. 9:15). You did not ask God for this gift; it was freely bestowed.

At this Christmas season, will you receive presents from earthly friends and reject the gift of God? Base ingratitude! You can commit no greater sin than that of rejecting Jesus Christ. Everything you ever did fades into insignificance in the face of your refusal of the gift of God. Confess your utter worthlessness and simply accept the Lord Jesus Christ, God’s “unspeakable gift.”

At this Christmas season, we may not bring Him as costly a present as the Magi brought, but we can bring to His feet and cradle the frankincense of our joy, the pearls of our tears, the kiss of our love, the prostration of our worship; we can move someone to faith in Him, and give testimony that Jesus, our Saviour, our Lord, is Son of Man without sin, Son of God with power and glory, whose name is ceaseless music at the throne which overlooks the world.– R G Lee

CHRIST THE LORD

December 23, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” – (Luke 2:10–11)

The angel began that wonderful announcement to the shepherds with, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy. . . .” Maybe you are suffering today. You might find yourself wondering, Where is the joy? But what is the joy about? Is it about an opportunity to go shopping? Is the message of Christmas “Let it snow?” No, it is, “Let us worship.”

The angels’ visit to the shepherds became the first Christmas celebration. It’s as though heaven and earth were celebrating it together, as though a portal to glory had been opened up. These shepherds saw the supernatural world, the heavenly world. On that first Christmas, there was a big celebration in heaven and on earth over the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ.

We have a Savior: “For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11). That is the most important thing. We have a Savior who came to save us from the power and penalty of sin. Whatever you are going through in life, remember this: you have a Savior. He has put your sins as far away from you as the east is from the west.

Christ means “anointed one.” Another word for that is Messiah. Jesus was the fulfillment of God’s promise to send His Son as the Messiah. This is a simple reminder that God keeps His promises. God said that He would send a Messiah, and the Messiah came.

Lord means that we have a sovereign God who is in control of our lives.

So set aside the things you have become preoccupied with and remember that you have a Savior. You have a Lord. You have a Christ. And you have His promises.–Christmas is a reminder that God keeps His promises.(Greg Laurie)

NO PLACE FOR JESUS

December 22, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.”–Luke 2:6–7

Though Bethlehem was just a small village, a few miles away from Jerusalem, it had a large place in Israel’s history because it was the boyhood home of the great King David. As a result, when the Roman order was given for people to return to their ancestral home to register for the census, the town of Bethlehem quickly filled up. Those who had close relatives there undoubtedly stayed with them, and those who did not took every room in what was apparently the only inn in town where visitors could find lodging.

By the time Joseph and Mary arrived in Bethlehem, there were no rooms available, so despite the fact that Mary was about to give birth, they had to settle for staying with the animals in a nearby stable. That is why on His first night on Earth, the very King of Heaven, the Lord of Glory, the Son of God was carefully wrapped and placed into a feeding trough for animals.

This would not be the last time the world would have no place for Jesus. During His ministry, Jesus was often rejected. He warned one potential follower of what to expect if he were to follow Him: “And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head” (Matthew 8:20). This lack of room for Jesus is easily seen in our day, and we must be on guard to make certain that He is the center of our lives.(Paul Chappell)

HE HATH DONE ALL THINGS WELL

December 21, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“He hath done all things well”—Mark 7:37

When we look at the beauty of creation, the bounty on our table, and the blessings bestowed upon us it is easy to say, “He hath done all things well”. There can be no denying when it comes to these evident manifestations of God’s goodness. However, when it comes to burdens we tend to lose sight of His goodness. If He isn’t walking in lock-step with us we seem to think He is less than fair.

The truth is, God is good all the time–regardless of what He does or doesn’t do. Yet we often misunderstand Him. We lack the wisdom to see the wisdom of His ways. We lose sight of reality. As sure as there is light there is darkness. As sure as there is pleasure there is pain. as sure as there is good there is bad. But, regardless of circumstances or conditions, this testimony is always true–“He hath done all things well“. Whatever God causes or allows it is for some good reason.

Considering this should remind us of the need to  live by faith rather than sight. Unless our feelings are based on God’s Word we will always come to the wrong conclusions and become frustrated. Faith is our assurance of God’s promises and our acceptance of His precepts and principles. Trying to live any other way is a struggle and a burden.

None of us enjoy pain and suffering. We enjoy things that are pleasurable. When we are deprived of our desires we feel cheated and want an explanation. Sometimes we feel we’ve been singled out for persecution and we wallow in self-pity. To avoid that we need to keep a few things in mind. First of all we need to remember that trials are common to all. Everyone has their share of suffering. It’s not wise to compare ourselves to one another. Just because someone doesn’t complain it doesn’t mean they aren’t hurting. And, just because somebody complains more doesn’t mean they hurt more. We don’t know how the other person feels. Second, we need to understand that regardless of how good we are we are all unworthy. None of us deserve to be exempt from trials. The only perfect person who ever lived was Christ and He suffered much more than anything we’ve ever experienced. How then can we ever say,”This isn’t fair”? Third, we need to realize that because we feel our trial is a hindrance rather than a help it isn’t necessarily so. God knows best. He never allows His children to suffer without a reason. He has a purpose and a plan for our pain, and it is perfect. He doesn’t expect us to understand His ways, but He does demand that we accept His wisdom, trusting Him to do what is right and best.

Every child has at some time thought their father to be mistaken about something only to discover later that he was right. Even so, there is coming a day when all God’s children will be compelled to humbly bow and confess that “He hath done all things well”. Trust Him now!
