CONSIDERING CONTENTMENT

November 19, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.“–Phil. 4:11

Most people think they are doing rather well with their Christian life–at least that’s what they want you to think, until you start talking about things such as patience, forgiveness, contentment, etc. Those are “show-stoppers”. These are things we would rather not talk about. Contentment, for example, is something everyone desires but no one wants to discuss. A good way to put a chill on a conversation and make people uncomfortable is to bring up the subject of contentment. They don’t want to hear about it because they know they fail at it, and most of us don’t want to take responsibility for our failures–but we must.

Contentment is commanded. It is an obligation, not an option. And regardless of the circumstances we are never relieved from this duty. The responsibility is squarely on our shoulders. We are the responsible party. Contentment depends upon the person–not his position, possessions, pleasures, or problems. There are no scapegoats to get us off the hook. J. R. Miller wrote, “One is content, living in the poorest way–with bare necessities and no luxuries, working hard and enduring many trials. Another is discontented in a palace– with all the comforts, delicacies, and ease that money can provide. The difference is in the hearts of the two people.” That’s well said.

Ben Franklin said, “ Content makes poor men rich; discontent makes rich men poor”. And there are numerous examples proving this to be true. We see it all around us. There are those living the life-style of the rich and famous who are miserable, and there are those who live in poverty with perfect peace. How about you? Have you learned, as Paul, “to be content“?

I suspect that we’re seldom honest when it comes to this matter. I’m afraid that we pretend much more than we would like to admit. We claim one thing, but the evidence points to another. Americans are more covetous and less content than anyone. Facts are stubborn things, and they also can be embarrassing. But we can’t change what we don’t acknowledge. The first step in becoming content is admitting we’re not.

For many years I’ve kept a little plague in my office which says, “I complained because I had no shoes, until I met a man who had no feet.” With Thanksgiving coming up we need to start thinking more about what we have and less about what we don’t. Think about it!

HOW TO BE HAPPY

November 18, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:”–1 Peter 1:8

What does it mean to be happy?

Dennis Wholey, author of a book called Are You Happy?, reports that according to experts, only about 20% of Americans today are happy. One psychiatrist, Thomas Szasz, even went so far as to say, “Happiness is an imaginary condition, formerly attributed by the living to the dead, now usually attributed by adults to children and by children to adults.”

To really understand the key to finding happiness, it’s important to first understand what it is. Looking at the biblical use of the word, we find ‘happy’ is most often used to describe a state of being emotionally satisfied with one’s circumstances. The problem, however, comes when those circumstances change.

This is why lasting happiness eludes almost everyone… because it’s based upon our circumstances, which can change in a moment. But there is a biblical attitude that, when we have it, will keep us emotionally satisfied even when circumstances change – it’s called ‘joy’.

The key to lasting happiness is to let God’s Spirit express joy through you that’s not based on your current situation. Instead of looking for your circumstances to satisfy you, look to God to give you His inexpressible joy in all circumstances! (Senior Living)

MORE AWFUL THAN ATHEIST

November 17, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God….” Psalm 14:1

To deny the existence of God is to be an atheist–and all atheists are silly fools. However, those who profess to be atheists, and live according to their profession, are more honorable fools than the millions of painted hypocrites who profess faith in Christ and yet live like infidels! At least professing atheists are consistent fools! Atheists say that there is no God, and being true to their profession, they live as if there were no God. But there are untold multitudes of church goers who, in their pretentious religiosity, denounce atheism as an abomination–and yet they live just like atheists! These church going atheists are pathetic because they lack the honesty and courage to speak what they say with their lives and in their hearts every single day–that there is no God!

Men and women who say that they believe in God, and yet live like Hell, are atheists at heart–and that makes them the most foolish of all fools!
“I’m a drunk, but I believe in God.
I’m a profane worldling, but I believe in God.
I’m a vile, filthy fornicator, but I believe in God.
I live like Hell, but I’m going to Heaven.
I don’t worship God, but I believe in God.
I don’t read the Bible or practice its teachings, but I love the God who wrote it.”

Such stupid gibberish betrays the atheism that is bound up in the hearts of religious hypocrites around the world! If you want to know what someone believes, look past what they say, and just consider how they live. All who say that there is a God in the heavens, and yet refuse to honor God’s Son, are nothing more than atheists masquerading as Christians.

I wonder, what does your life say? Does it prove your profession to be true–or blast it to pieces? (Frank Hall)

UNDERSTANDING OTHERS

November 16, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Judge not, that ye be not judged.”–Matt.7:1

Although we are to judge righteous judgement, we should never judge others presumptuously or hypocritically. Too many times we judge folks without knowing the facts. A good example of this folly is found in the following story.

A teacher began her story . . .A cruise ship met with an accident at sea. On the ship was a couple with an infant. Making their way to the lifeboat, they realized that there was only space for just one of them left. The lifeboat was drifting away and it would be a miracle if either could jump into it.  At that moment, the man pushed the woman aside, grabbed the baby, and leaped onto the lifeboat himself. His wife stood on the sinking ship and shouted just one sentence to her husband.

The teacher stopped and asked, “What do you think she shouted?”Most of the students excitedly answered, “Why did you do that? I hate you!”

Now, the teacher noticed a boy who was silent throughout and called on him to answer. He replied, “Teacher, I believe she would have shouted, ‘Take care of our baby!’”

The teacher was surprised, asking “Have you heard this story before?”

The boy shook his head, “Nope, but that was what my mom told my dad before she died from cancer.”

The teacher lamented, “Your answer is correct.  The cruise ship sank. The man went home and brought up their daughter single-handedly.”

Many years later after the death of the man, their daughter found his diary while tidying his belongings. It turns out that when her parents went onto the cruise ship, the mother was already dying from a terminal illness. At that critical moment, the father rushed to the only chance of survival for the sake of their child.

He wrote in his diary, “How I wished to sink to the bottom of the ocean with you, but for the sake of our daughter, I can only let you lie forever below the sea alone.”

The story was finished, the class was silent.  The teacher reminded the children that we should never focus on the surface and judge others without understanding them first.

Things are not always as they seem–make sure you get the facts before you accuse others of wrong doing

TOP PRIORITY

November 15, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you“– Matthew 6:33

Life can often seem very complicated. Career decisions, family dynamics, academic ambitions — every area and issue of life has its own challenges.

However, Jesus spotlights for us the one overriding, all-encompassing priority for living and, buy doing so, simplifies our complicated decisions considerably. Seek first the kingdom, Jesus says, not personal advancement, financial security, or self fulfillment.

Should you accept this promotion? Seek first the kingdom. Where should you send your children to school? Seek first the kingdom. Should you pursue this relationship? Seek first the kingdom.

While this directive does not provide the specific answer to every problem, it certainly does eliminate a great number of possible options. If it does not further the kingdom of God and reflect his righteousness, then it does not meet your basic criteria and need not be considered any further.

When we single-mindedly seek the welfare of the kingdom, then Jesus promises that God will seek our welfare, as well: all these things will be added to you. What things are these? Everything that is necessary and good for you, everything that will assist you in your goal of advancing the kingdom of Christ.

As you face difficult and convoluted questions today, filter your thoughts and decisions through this all-important objective: seek first the kingdom of God.–(Baptist Bible Hour)
