GOD’S HATRED OF SIN

September 29, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”–2 Cor. 5:21

The fact that God hates sin is evident–He tells us so! Over and over again the Bible affirms that God, who is holy, hates sin. Not only does He tell us so, He shows us. No where is God’s hatred of sin seen more clearly than at Calvary. Sin never appears more awful than it does when you consider the cost of being cleansed from it–the crucifixion of Christ, God’s own dear Son.

Since sin cannot go unpunished, Christ became sin for us and allowed Himself to be put to death that He might pay the awful cost and provide life for those dead in trespasses and sin. God hates sin and loves the sinner to such a great degree that He gave Himself to be both “just and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus”(Rom. 3:26). While my mind cannot comprehend so great a love, my heart cannot constrain itself– I am compelled to shout, “Hallelujah what a Savior”. There is no greater love than this–nor is there any greater hatred of sin! He who is pure and spotless became “sin for us— that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him”(2 Cor. 5:21). As to how such love and hatred should affect us, Samuel Davies wrote:

“Oh! what still more dreadful havoc would Sin have made, if it had been punished upon the sinner himself in his own person! Surely all the various miseries which have been inflicted upon our guilty world in all ages, and even all the punishments of Hell–do not so loudly proclaim the terrible desert and malignity of sin–as the cross of Christ! The infinite malignity of sin, and God’s hatred to it, appear nowhere in so striking and dreadful a light–as in the cross of Christ! Let a reasonable creature take but one serious view of that cross–and surely he must ever after tremble at the thought of the least sin!”

THE RIGHT SIDE

September 28, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths.“– Prov. 4:11

We hear a lot of talk about “looking on the bright side”, and there is often a need for that.,But we should be more concerned about the “right side”. Cheering up a weary wayward traveler might change his disposition, but it does nothing for his direction. If he is on the wrong road looking on the “bright side” won’t help him. Having a smile on his face and a spring in his step won’t get his where he needs to be. Even if he buys into the theory called “the power of positive thinking” there is no assurance that all will end well. Being confident or sincere is no substitute for being right.

So how can we know we are on the right road? Contrary to what many believe, the only sure guide and perfect standard is God’s Word. The Bible is always right. If we adopt any other standard by which to live the only thing sure is that it will end in disappointment.”Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.”(Prov. 4:14). “Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.“(Prov. 4:26)

Saying you have faith that everything will turn out okay doesn’t mean it will. Faith in faith, looking on the bright side, keeping a positive attitude might cheer you up, but it won’t solve your problems. The only time we can know we are right is when our faith is in God’s Word. He cannot lie and He never fails. When you look on the right side you are looking on the bright side. Remember, God’s will is always right, best, and safest.

SELF-WATCH

September 27, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”– Pr 4:23

Do not spare your judgment of yourself. Never permit yourself to do things which you would be the first to condemn in others. Never suppose that there are reasons for you to do a wrong, which, under no circumstances would you tolerate in your neighbor.

Do not spare yourself in confessing your sins and mistakes. Confession is one of the tests of nobility. Not a few are willing to confess to God, who never attempt to confess to men. It is a serious question whether that sorrow for sin is genuine and deep enough which does not lead the offender to ask his fellow-man for pardon, even as he asks his God. Nothing could be clearer than Christ’s words, that whenever we remember that our brother has aught against us, we are to leave our gift at the altar, and go first to seek reconciliation with him, before we offer our sacrifice to God.

The supreme test of goodness is not in the greater but in the smaller incidents of our character and practice; not what we are when standing in the searchlight of public scrutiny, but when we reach the firelight flicker of our homes; not what we are when some clarion-call rings through the air, summoning us to fight for life and liberty, but our attitude when we are called to sentry-duty in the grey morning, when the watch-fire is burning low. It is impossible to be our best at the supreme moment if character is corroded and eaten into by dally inconsistency, unfaithfulness, and besetting sin.

You cannot really help people without expending yourself. The only work that tells must cost you something. Gold, silver, and precious stones can never be built into the new Jerusalem unless you are willing to part with them from the stores of your own life.

Most loving Father, may love fill and rule my heart. For then there will spring up and be cherished between Thee and me a likeness of character, and union of will, so that I may choose and refuse what Thou dost. AMEN. (F B Meyer)

CLEANSED BY THE WORD

September 26, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

[How] shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed according to thy word– Psalms 119:9

Sin is spiritual pollution. It corrupts those who come into contact with it and, since we all do, everyone needs to know how to live a life of purity. Fortunately the Bible tells us. We are cleansed by the washing of the Word. If a man bathes but once a year you can bet there will be some evidence of it–an unpleasant experience for those around him. Even so, if we neglect the Bible it will have a negative affect on us and others. Our text tells us how to avoid this. The following from the Baptist Bible Hour provides good insight on this matter:

“The question is revealing. Notice the psalmist doesn’t say, “Why should a young man cleanse his way?” Neither does he ask, “Should a young man cleanse his way?”

He has already moved past the point that so many young people struggle with, which is to question authority and wonder why mental, emotional, and physical purity is so important. He knows that he is sinful and foolish before a holy God. He is not questioning the need to cleanse his way, but is now pursuing the best means to accomplish this.

And how is it to be done? By taking heed to—by internalizing and personalizing—the Word of God. On one hand this may be disappointing, if you hoped for a more entertaining, less demanding solution. Nothing less than an unblinking gaze into the mirror of God’s Word will show you the genuine flaws in your character and mindset.

On the other hand, it is greatly encouraging. The solution you seek for is readily available! You do not have to climb to the top of a mountain in Tibet, or have a certain social or religious pedigree, or attain some academic status in order to know and understand how to purify your life and please God.

The solution is simple, but it is not easy. Take heed to, study hard, God’s Word, the Bible. Make His wisdom your own, and live by it.

ABSOLUTELY RIGHT

September 25, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”- John 14:6

A story is told about two men who lived in a small village and got into a terrible dispute that neither of them could resolve. So one night, the first man went to the town sage and told him his version of the story. When he was finished, the sage said, “You’re absolutely right.”

The next night, the second man went to the sage and told his side of the story. After he’d said his piece, the sage told him, “You’re absolutely right.”

When the second man left, the sage’s wife scolded her husband. “These two men told you different stories, and you told them both they were right. They both can’t be absolutely right!”

The sage turned to his wife and said, “You’re absolutely right.”

In this day and age, more and more people are choosing consensus over truth. Even many spiritual leaders today validate every system of belief as separate paths to God. But the reality is if two people say very opposite things about God, they both can’t be right! (There is no hope in the pope!)

So what gives us confidence that Christianity is the right path? Quite simply, it’s because all other religions teach man how to (try to) reach God, but the Bible teaches that God reached down to us in the person of Jesus Christ.

Jesus is so different than any other spiritual leader. He didn’t come to show the way; He came to be the Way. Trust in Him alone.

Ask God to confirm in your heart that Jesus is the only way to the Father and thank Him for providing a way.(Senior Living)
