THE TEST OF VICTORY

June 26, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“David… behaved himself wisely.”–1Samuel 17:55-1Samuel 18:1-5

The hour of victory is a more severe moral test than the hour of defeat. Many a man can brave the perils of adversity who succumbs to the seductions of prosperity. He can stand the cold better than the heat! He is enriched by failure, but “spoiled by success.” To test the real quality of a man, let us regard him just when he has slain Goliath! “David behaved himself wisely”!

He was not “eaten up with pride.”.. He went among his friends as though no Goliath had ever crossed his way. He was not for ever recounting the triumph, and fishing for the compliments of his audience. He “behaved wisely.” So many of us tarnish our victories by the manner in which we display them. We put them into the shop-window, and they become “soiled goods.”

And in this hour of triumph David made a noble friend. In his noonday he found Jonathan, and their hearts were knit to each other in deep and intimate love. It is beautiful when our victories are so nobly borne that they introduce us into higher fellowships, and the friends of heaven become our friends.(Copied)

If we had the attitude of David we would fear no enemy, lose no battle, boast of no victory, and lack no friends of the right kind. That sounds like an example we ought to follow. Regardless of what happens in your life today things will turn out better if you behave yourself wisely.

YOU CAN TRUST THE TRUTH

June 25, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

” For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.”–Romans 14:11-12

Many years ago when some of the very first British explorers went to Australia for the first time, they discovered a mammal which laid eggs and spent some time in water. It had a broad, flat tail, webbed feet, and a bill similar to a duck.

This animal, later named the duck-billed platypus, confounded people as it was described. In fact, most people who heard about it felt it was a hoax. Even later when explorers returned with a pelt of the animal, the English populace accused them of sewing together parts of different animals.

In spite of the evidence, the people believed what they wanted to believe. Yet most people would agree that one’s beliefs about a certain thing have no bearing on whether it is truthful or not. You can believe with all your heart there is a pink elephant right behind you, but that doesn’t make it true. Likewise, there are many people dedicated to the belief the earth is flat. And no matter how much they believe it, it’s just not true.

The truth is the truth. And though the claims of Christ may seem farfetched for some, the reality is that we have an empty tomb to validate it all. So don’t be discouraged by the scoffers. Hold fast to the truth of your faith and trust the promise that one day, all will see Christ in His glory.–(Senior Living)

HOW TO HELP

June 24, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.”–Gal. 6:1-2

Pastor Jack Graham said, “There was a young lady I heard about years ago who had come to the end of herself. She was in a hopeless situation and saw no reason to continue living. The purpose in her life was gone. So she went out onto the edge of a pier, closed her eyes, and leapt out into the cold, dark waters below.

But a young man walking nearby saw what happened. And before he could even think, he jumped off the pier himself into the turbulent frigid waters below. But he had forgotten to consider one thing: he didn’t know how to swim. So as he was struggling to even keep his head above water, that young lady reached over and began to help him.

They both made it out alive. And as a result, the woman realized she did have a purpose: to love others and to serve Jesus Christ. It wasn’t the fact that the man saved her life through a great act of heroism that did it. It was that someone saw her pain and cared enough to step down and go through it with her.

When it comes to loving others, that’s the call on our lives. Not to always have all the answers and be able to fix every problem, but to step into others’ lives, bear their burdens, and walk through their pain with them. That’s what it really means to help others endure life’s hardships!”

THE PERFECTING OF LOVE

June 23, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. Herein is our love made perfect...”–1John 4:16-17 (read vs.11-21)

How? By dwelling in God and God in us. Love is not a manufacture; it is a fruit. It is not born of certain works; it springs out of certain relations. It does not come from doing something; it comes from living with Somebody. “Abide in Me.” That is how love is born, for “love is of God, and God is love.”

How many people are striving who are not abiding. They live in a manufactory, they do not live in a home. They are trying to make something instead of to know Somebody. “This is life, to know Thee.” When I am related to the Lord Jesus, when I dwell with Him, love is as surely born as beauty and fragrance are born when my garden and the spring-time dwell together. If we would only wisely cultivate the fellowship of Jesus, everything else would follow in its train—all that gracious succession of beautiful things which are called “the fruits of the Spirit.”

And “herein is our love made perfect.” It is always growing richer, because it is always drawing riches from the inexhaustible love of God. How could it be otherwise? Endless resource must mean endless growth. “Our life is hid with Christ in God,” and hence our love will “grow in all wisdom and discernment.”–J. H. Jowett

CHANGE IS COMING

June 22, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.“–Psalm 30:5

“This too shall pass”, employed in a speech by Abraham Lincoln before he was president, has often been quoted by those going through times of difficulty. Another quote, taken from a song, that has encouraged folks is, “What a difference a day makes”. Both of these are popular for good reason. None of us know what a day holds–each one is a mystery, and change will come.

For some of you this day got off to a good start, but before the sun sets it will bring grief. For others the day started all wrong, but unseen blessings are just around the corner. Keeping these thoughts in mind is helpful because we tend to make bad choices and do foolish things when we are in a crisis. Some turn a day of difficulty into a lifetime of grief and regret. They sow a sinful seed that produces a harvest of sorrow, shame, and suffering. It often happens something like this:

We get into an unpleasant situation and there appears to be no way out, not a glimmer of hope. It seems that nothing will ever change for the better. You feel trapped without a way to escape. Sometimes you don’t even know how to pray. I’ve been there done that! There has been times when all I could say was “Help!”, and amazingly by the next morning the whole world seemed different–better. As much as I didn’t deserve it or even expect it, help came. It was as if God had worked a miracle. Those experiences cause me to focus all the more on those two sayings.

Regardless of how bad things appear, a day can make a big difference. Regardless of how bad things are, “This too shall pass”. I know that’s true because, for the Christian the best is always yet to come! That’s why I am so blessed when I hear someone sing, “Hold on my child, joy comes in the morning!”. Indeed it will.

Some glorious day Jesus will come or we will go. Our journey here will be over and we will be changed into the likeness of the One who changes not! It’s just a matter of time.
