A DISSATISFIED MESSIAH

June 20, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

Don’t let the title fool you, so as to think that there is some fault with Christ— there isn’t. Our Savior is perfect in every way. He is Altogether Lovely. He is “dissatisfied” only in the sense of His desire for His people. This is what Paul David Tripp had in mind when he wrote:

“The One on whom we wait is a dissatisfied Messiah. He will not relent, he will not quit, he will not rest until ever promise he has made been fully delivered. He will not turn from his work until every one of his children has been totally transformed. He will continue to fight until the last enemy is under his feet. He will reign until his kingdom has fully come. As long as sin exists, he will shower us with forgiving, empowering, and delivering grace.

He will defend us against attack and attack the enemy on our behalf. He will be faithful to convict, rebuke, encourage, and comfort. He will continue to open the warehouse of his wisdom and unfold for us the glorious mysteries of his truth. He will stand with us through the darkness and the light. He will guide us on a path we could never have discovered or would never have been wise enough to choose. He will supply for us every good thing that we need to be what he’s called us to be and to do what he’s called us to do in the place where he’s put us.

And he will not rest from his work until every last microbe of sin has been completely eradicated from every heart of each of his children! “

ENDING EXPECTATIONS

June 18, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good—–“ Genesis 50:20

George Eliot wrote, “I’ve been a great deal happier since I have given up thinking about what is easy and pleasant, and being discontented because I couldn’t have my own will. Our life is determined for us; and it makes the mind very free when we give up wishing, and only think of bearing what is laid upon us, and doing what is given us to do.”

He discovered what most folks never discover. The harder we work trying to make ourselves happy the more miserable we become. It is only when we resign ourselves to do the will of God, in whatever circumstances we find ourselves, that we discover happiness. To overcome anxiety we must accept what God allows, believing, as tough as it is, He will use it for some good and His glory. That is the path to peace.

We simply must stop expecting people to beat a path to our door seeking to bless us. Gripe all you want about it being their duty—that doesn’t change anything for the better. We need to think of ourselves as being totally undeserving of anything, only then will we be thankful for everything. Oh yeah, one more thing—how many paths have you made to the doors of others, seeking to be a blessing? Expect a blessing and you will be disappointed. Be a blessing and you will be blessed—even if others ignore you. True happiness doesn’t depend on what others do or don’t do. It comes from a proper relationship with Christ. That puts happiness within the reach of every child of God.

SIN THE CAUSE; CHRIST THE CURE

June 17, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” – Romans 5:12

It started in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve, but it is growing in popularity with each passing day. Seems like everyone today is playing the blame game– no one wants to take responsibility for their sins. Adrian Rogers put it like this:

“Some would say that man is but the sum total of his environment and his body chemistry. If he does wrong, it’s because he’s like a computer that has been programmed wrongly. If he was raised in a bad neighborhood, he shouldn’t be blamed for breaking into stores or smoking dope. Or if he has a vile temper, perhaps he had an overbearing mother.

According to psychologists, these unfortunate souls may be pitied but not blamed. They may be sick, but they’re not sinful. They may be weak but not wicked. They need guidance but not salvation. But these social evaluators are wrong!

Are you blaming others? Or taking responsibility and coming to the Cross? Let me sum it up this way: life is short; death is sure; sin is the cause; and Christ is the cure.”

NEW LABELS ON OLD BOTTLES

June 16, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us … If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.” – 1 John 1:8, 10

Today we’ve almost done away with the idea of sin. Our culture rejects sin as old-fashioned, so we’ve taken away the word sin and replaced it with new words in our vocabulary.

Some of these high‑sounding phrases are: error, mistake, misjudgment, weakness, psychological maladjustment, glandular malfunction, and a stumble upward—anything but sin.

We’ve gone through the medicine cabinet and put new labels on old bottles of poison. So we have new terminology. We’ve tried to change things, but they’ve not really been changed at all. We have some egg-headed people—with all of their learnedness and intelligence—who have said “sin” is out of date. But nothing’s changed except how we see ourselves. We’re lying to ourselves and to a holy God.

Take inventory. Are you seeing your sin and dealing with it humbly and honestly before the Lord? Do you remember the father and the Prodigal Son? Our Father is full of mercy, long-suffering and ready to embrace you. He loves you.–Adrian Rogers

GOOD MAN = GOOD DAD

June 15, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

No man is fit to be a husband who is not a good man. He need not be great, nor rich, nor brilliant, nor clever, but he must be good, or he is not worthy to take a gentle, trusting woman’s tender life into his keeping. Of course he must love his wife; without love there is no real marriage, and ceremony and ring and vows and prayer are only empty formalities. He must love his wife- – -. The world has read and heard quite enough moralizing about a wife’s duty to be always winning and attractive, retaining the charm of girlhood amid all cares, toils, and sorrows. Of course; but is a husband under less obligation to love his wife and always to be lover-like? This is a good rule, which should work both ways.

But affectionateness, however desirable, is not all that is needed in a husband who would do his full share in happy home making. Life is not all sentiment. We cannot live on ambrosia. Happiness must have a very practical basis. A good husband must be a man. He must be a good man-manly, true, worthy, brave, generous, a man whom a noble woman can respect and honor all the days of her life. He must be a sober man; no man who comes home under the influence of intoxicating drink, even occasionally only, is going to do quite his share in making happiness for the woman who has trusted her all to him. He must be a man of pure, unblemished life, whose character is above suspicion, whose name will always be an honor and a pride in his own home. The husband has a great deal to do with the question of home happiness.–J. R. Miller
