FINDING HAPPINESS

November 25, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

“—a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance
 of the things which he possesseth.” Luke 12:15

“And having food and raiment let us be therewith
content.” 1 Timothy 6:8

A little simple food, and plain clothing, and humble
shelter—this is all that man really needs. Outward
things can neither make a man happy or miserable.
Ahab was discontented on a king’s throne.
Paul and Silas were happy in a dungeon.

    Nature is content with little;
    grace is content with less.
    Luxury is seldom satisfied;
    lust is never satisfied.

If we have but little in this world, we may content
ourselves with the reflection, that it is safer to have
little than much. Many have been ruined by prosperity.
Many have gone to hell splendidly clothed, and who
lived each day in luxury!

Very wise was the prayer of Agur, “Give me neither
poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread.”
Proverbs 30:8

Christians should be content, because time is short;
and if time is short, trouble cannot be long! “Weeping
may endure for a night—but joy comes in the morning!”
These light afflictions are but for a moment—and then
comes an eternal weight of glory! The Christian is
traveling down a rough and dirty piece of road; but
he is going home—to his glorious heavenly home!
This is the true secret of finding happiness in a miserable world.

YOU CAN TRUST GOD

November 24, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

“The Word of the Lord endureth forever!” 1 Peter 1:25

Men often make promises to others, on which the others depend—perhaps staking all their interests and happiness on the promise given to them, only to find at last that the promises have been forgotten. But God’s least Word is sure and eternal. When a soul takes any divine promise, and builds a fabric of hope upon it, sooner might the stars fall from heaven, than that God should forget his Word or fail to make it good.

An English nobleman, walking in the country one day, found a little child in distress. She had broken her pitcher, and her family were poor, and the vessel could not be replaced. The good man put his hand in his pocket to find some money to give the child—but had not a penny. Then he bade her meet him tomorrow at the same place, at the same hour, promising to bring her money to buy a new pitcher. The child ran away very happy, reposing perfect confidence in the stranger’s word to her.

Tomorrow he was invited to dine with the queen at the very hour of his appointment with the child. But he promptly declined the invitation. He would not fail in his word, even to an unknown child of poverty. She had trusted him, and his promise had made her happy. He would not disappoint her for a thousand dinners with royalty! Will God be less faithful to his Word? No Word he has spoken shall ever be broken!–J. R. Miller

ABOUNDING GRACE

November 23, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work.–2 Corinthians 9:8

God says what He means and means what He says. When He says, “all” He means “all”. End of story! Notice all three “all’s” found in this verse–“all grace”—“all sufficiency”—“all things”. In every case nothing is lacking, incomplete, or excluded. God said “all”. One preacher called this “is a three-fold link in a golden chain, let down from the throne of grace by the God of grace.”

Notice that grace doesn’t just exist–it abounds. It is inexhaustible–like a great river that just keeps flowing. At this very moment millions are drawing from its vast supply, yet it is not diminished in the least, not even a drop! Regardless of how much we receive there is always more, more than enough.

Do you live in the sunlight of this precious promise? Or are you in a dark corner of despair, dwelling on the magitude of your miseries? Do yourself a favor and get your focus off of self and set your sights on God. Regardless of our situaton we may receive “grace upon grace”. John MacDuff said, there is “grace in all our circumstances and situations, in all vicissitudes and changes, in all the varied phases of the Christian’s being. Grace in sunshine–and in storm; in health–and in sickness; in life–and in death! Grace for the old believer–and the young believer. Grace for the tried believer, and the weak believer, and the tempted believer. Grace for duty–and grace in duty; grace to carry the joyous cup with a steady hand–and grace to drink the bitter cup with an unmurmuring spirit; grace to have prosperity sanctified–and grace to say through tears,’May Your will be done!’.”

Indeed, there is grace enough for everyone, at all times, in all places, and all circumstances. God’s abounding grace is absolutely amazing!. Although the road is rough and the fight is fierce, keep your focus there and your life will be blessed with rainbows and roses.

THE GROUNDS FOR GRATITUDE

November 22, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”–1 Thess.5:18

Someone said,” The foundation of gratitude is the expectation of nothing.” But, I believe there is a better way to look at it. As a child of God I do expect some things–the Bible teaches us to do so. Where there is faith there must be expectation. As we yield ourselves to God’s will we can expect that He will supply all our needs (Matt.6:33). We should expect that and we should be thankful for it. We should also expect forgiveness when we confess, peace when we follow God’s plan, strength when we are trusting Christ for aid, and grace when we are weak. There’s nothing wrong with expecting God to keep His promise—there is something wrong if we don’t. God is honored when we trust Him. Those who expect nothing are likely to get nothing.

The best way to develop a grateful heart is to realize that we don’t deserve anything–we really don’t! Think about it this way—Those who don’t deserve anything should be thankful for everything. That way our gratitude is rooted and grounded in grace. How can we not be grateful when we realize that everything we have is the result of God’s grace? No one is earning their way with God–nobody! “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father–“(James 1:17).

As long as we think we deserve more, bigger, and better we will fail to be grateful. When we understand that we are just sinners saved by grace, deserving of hell, it is much easier to accept what God allows and to appreciate what God provides. Although we are totally undeserving, we are joint-heirs with Christ.Be thankful!

If God never did anything but save us from hell we would have no reason to complain about anything.–HDS

A GOOD EXAMPLE

November 21, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

…..be thou an example of the believers…1 Timothy 4:12

Around the turn of the century in rural Tennessee an old man crippled with arthritis was very faithful in his assembling with the saints. Twice on Sunday and on Wednesday nights a little girl watched from her window as the old man with his cane painfully made his way down to the little church on the corner. One Sunday morning following a snow storm, the little girl ran to her window and looking out exclaimed, “Surely the old man will not go to church this morning.” But there he was, right on schedule, plodding very cautiously through the snow.

The little girl could not contain herself any longer. She just had to visit the little church to see what possibly could be there that would bring the old man out on such an inclement morning. The rest is history. The little girl was impressed by the services there that morning and a short time later became a Christian. After high school she enrolled in a Christian college and while there she met a fine young Christian boy whom she later married. To this union a son was born who was to become one of the finest gospel preachers. This brother during his ministry has literally led thousands to Christ.

The old man went to his reward never realizing just what an impact he had made for the cause of Christ. Because of his godly influence many will go into heaven with him. There can be no greater joy than to reach heaven and to her someone say, “I am here because you have shown me the way.”(copied)

Some of you have children and grandchildren—you better stop and think about where your example is leading them. We only get one chance to get it right and we are accountable for our actions. Hopefully we will lead them to Christ.
