GOD KNOWS

November 10, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

“And what can David say more unto thee? for thou, Lord God knowest thy servant.–.” 2 Samuel 7:20

Who has not felt in prayer the utter inadequacy of speech—to express his heart’s deep longings? We try to tell God of our sorrow for sin, our hunger after righteousness; but we can tell him only the merest fraction of what we feel. Words are never large enough for thought. No poet ever gets into his lines—the whole of the vision of beauty which floats before his soul. No true orator ever finds sentences majestic enough—to express the sentiments that burn in his breast. Deep, pure love—is never able to put into language its most sacred feelings. It is only the commonplace of the inner life—that can be interpreted in words. There is always more, which lies unexpressed, than is uttered in speech.

In one of Paul’s epistles, there is a wonderful word which shows how God understands our unexpressed prayers. “Unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think.” God is able to answer prayer, not only beyond what we can express—but even beyond what we can think. He knows our deepest and most sacred feelings. Even the hungers of our heart, the longings of our soul—he understands. We need not fret because we cannot tell God all that we feel or desire. He reads all that is within our heart, and answers not our mere words—but our yearnings, our longings.–J. R. Miller

NEVER ENDING WORSHIP

November 9, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.–Revelation 4:11

In this age when so many do not understand what is valuable and what’s not, we need this reminder. The following comments from “Turning Point” reminds us that worship is never a waste.

It is worth remembering that our modern word worship comes from the Old English word weorthscipe, or “worthship” — meaning to ascribe worth to someone or something. So when we worship God, we are reciting the reasons He is worthy to receive our praise: “We worship You because ….”

The psalmist David wrote, “I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised” (Psalm 18:3). Just before those words, he lists the reasons God is worthy: God is his rock, fortress, deliverer, strength, shield, stronghold, and the horn of his salvation. The apostle John heard these words in heaven: “You [ Jesus ] are worthy … for You were slain, and have redeemed us” (Revelation 5:9). Worship is always attached to worth. The question becomes, Is God only worthy on Sunday mornings from 11:00 a.m. until noon? Do the reasons God is worthy go away when we leave church? Or is God always worthy to be worshipped because He is always our rock, redeemer, and so on?

The answer is Yes — God is always worthy. The question then is, Are we always worshipping Him? If God never ceases to be God, our worship should also be never-ending.

Worship is Christian living.

DON’T MAKE IT WORSE

November 8, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

Even to day is my complaint bitter: my stroke is heavier than my groaning.–Job 23:2

Spurgeon said, “Most men cry before they are hurt, or more than they are hurt; but such was not Job’s case: he had good reason for every groan, and when he groaned most he fell short of expressing what he felt within.”

You could say that Job’s grief was greater than he could or would express to others. It’s true that Job expressed his grief, but we should not take this as anger toward God. Although Job complained to God, he did not complain about God.

 J. R. Miller said it well: “Job does not mean that he was rebellious—but that even with his submission to the divine will, he could hardly keep his pain from breaking out in cries. If we are God’s children, we should bear even the greatest sufferings without complaining. It may not always be possible to repress the outcries of anguish; but even if our affliction is too full of pain to be altogether repressed, we should not have in our heart, any rebellious feeling toward God.

An English writer tells of two birds, and how they acted when put into a cage. One bird flew violently against the wires of its prison, in unavailing efforts to escape, only bruising its own wings in the struggle. The other bird perched itself on the bar, and began to pour forth from its little throat, bursts of sweet song. We know well which bird was the wiser, which had learned the best way to meet hard conditions.

Some people are like the foolish bird—when they are in trouble they chafe, cry out, and complain. The result is, they only hurt themselves, make themselves more miserable, and do not in any sense lessen their trouble. It is wiser always, as well as more pleasing to God—for us to bear our trials patiently, singing songs of faith—rather than complaining in rebellion and discontent. Thus we take the bitterness out of trial, making it sweet.“

When speaking of our trials it is better to minimize them than to exaggerate. In other words, don’t make matters worse, even if they are worse, by trying to fully explain them. Others won’t understand anyway, and God already knows.–HDS

BOUNDLESS LOVE

November 7, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Eph. 3:18-19

Christ is wonderful in His love. Love was the first and eternal link in the golden chain lowered from the highest throne in heaven — down to the lowest depth of earth. That Christ should love us was the beginning of wonders. When we endeavor to comprehend that love, measure it, fathom it, scale it — we learn that it has heights we cannot reach, depths we cannot sound, lengths and breadths we cannot measure! Such love, such divine love, such infinite love, such everlasting love, such redeeming, such dying love — is an ocean whose eternal waves waft into our fallen world, every wonder of God and of heaven.

That Jesus should love such beings as us — that He should love us while we were yet sinners — that He should set His heart upon us, choose us, die for us, save us, and finally bring us to glory, knowing what we were, and what we would prove to be — oh, this is wondrous love indeed!—– It will cover all your sins, it will efface all your guilt; it will flood over all your unworthiness — and, floating upon its golden waves, it will gently waft you to the shore of eternal blessedness!

How often have you wondered why Christ should set His heart upon such a one as you! And is it not a wonder that, amid all your fickleness and backslidings, and cold, base returns — this love of God towards you has not chilled or changed? But do not rest, do not be satisfied with your present limited experience of Christ’s wonderful love. It is so marvelously great. This ocean of love is so fathomless, boundless, and inexhaustible — that you may plunge, with all your infirmities, sins, and sorrows, into its fullness, exclaiming, “O, the depth!” The well is deep! Drink abundantly, O beloved!–Octavius Winslow

REASON TO REJOICE

November 6, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

Sing unto the LORD, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness. –Psalm 30:4

A young father sat cradling his infant born just three weeks before as a tornado ripped through Will County, Illinois. When the fierce winds had died down and peace was restored, the man’s house was gone—and so was his baby. According to the news reports, however, the father discovered his child in a field near his house. Surprisingly, the baby was alive and well—and so was his family.

One reporter stopped by to cover the scene. She asked the young father if he was angry that he had lost everything he owned. The man replied, “No, I just thank God I have my baby and my family. Some people don’t even have that. Nothing else is important.”

Many times, it takes a tragedy to happen to remind us of what really matters in life. When things are going well for us, we can easily shift our focus to what we own. We can become obsessed and preoccupied with so many nonessential, unimportant material items—cars, houses, furniture, clothes, accessories, media equipment, and other trivialities. But when life is reduced to the essentials, our focus is brought back to the most important things and we realize that life itself is enough reason to praise God.—you may not have many material items to claim for yourself, but remember what is most important. If you have your life and the lives of the people you love, what more could you ask for? Praise God for today and the people He’s give you to share it with. When you think of all the “essentials” in your life, stop to thank Him.– – –Thank God for loving you, for your family and friends, and for the gift of life. Pray that He would help you live each day in light of this truth.(Senior Living)
