BECOMING FIT FOR GLORY

March 19, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

The LORD will give grace and glory  (Psalm 84:11). Grace is what we need just now, and it is to be had freely. What can be freer than a gift? Today we shall receive sustaining, strengthening, sanctifying, satisfying grace. He has given daily grace until now, and as for the future, that grace is still sufficient. If we have but little grace the fault most lie in ourselves; for the LORD is not straitened, neither is He slow to bestow it in abundance. We may ask for as much as we will and never fear a refusal. He giveth liberally and upbraideth not.

The LORD may not give gold, but He will give grace: He may not give gain, but He will give grace. He will certainly send us trial, but He will give grace in proportion thereto. We may be called to labor and to suffer, but with the call there will come all the grace required;

What an “end” is that in the text — “and glory!” We do not need glory yet, and we are not yet fit for it; but we shall have it in due order. After we have eaten the bread of grace, we shall drink the wine of glory. We must go through the holy, which is grace, to the holiest of all, which is glory. These words and glory are enough to make a man dance for joy. A little while — a little while, and then glory forever!  –Faith’s Checkbook

SUCCESS

March 18, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

––Thy will be done— Matthew 6:10
—not as I will, but as thou wilt. Matthew 26:39

Just about everyone would say that they want to live a successful life, but few are successful! What is success? It is doing the will of God, nothing less and nothing more. If you have any other purpose, aim, goal, or ambition as the main thing in life it is wrong. It’s not just wrong but wicked also. We have no right to do only as we please–unless what we please pleases God.

The truest test of one’s life is character. Reputation is one thing, character is another. Although we should be some what concerned about what others think about us it is God’s opinion that matters the most. With Him it is character that counts the most. It also what makes us do the things we do. That’s why we often hear it said, “Being is more important than doing”. It can also be said that a man of noble character will prize God’s will above all else. He is pleased by what pleases God.

It is only as we do the will of God that we are able to please God and, as strange as it might seem, self. Man was created to live in communion with God, in harmony with His will, and only in doing so can he find true fulfillment and complete satisfaction. To prize and pursue anything else as our reason for being is foolish. It is like a child chasing a soap bubble—it disappears the moment he grasps it. Such an endeavor is a waste of time and energy.

He who makes the pursuit of pleasure, power, position, and possessions his sole aim in living will never achieve true success–he misses the target every time. In their place these things might be fine, but they are never “in their place” when they are in first place. They can never be any better than of secondary importance. Only the will of God should be given top priority.

A life well lived is one which submits cheerfully to the will of God, seeks mainly the glory of God, and serves faithfully according to the dictates of God. Anything less is not enough. The true success has for his purpose, pursuit, pleasure, and prayer the will of God. He does it regardless of cost, conditions, circumstances, or consequences. So, how successful are you?

SERVING OTHERS

March 17, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me– Matthew 25:40

There are many of Jesus’ instructions that we show by our actions we have not fully comprehended or considered—or even believed.

He exhorts us “take no thought for tomorrow” and yet we worry ourselves to death. He promises “my yoke is easy” and yet we prefer to labor under our own. He says, “If you love me, keep my commandments” and yet we ever strive to separate the two. He warns “you cannot serve God and money” and yet we always try to join the two.

But perhaps the revelation which is most widely ignored is this: if you do anything for the least of Jesus’ brethren, it is as if you have done it to Jesus. Do you live like that is true?

Have you visited dingy, smelly nursing homes; given to foreign evangelism; reached out to broken addicts; taught your children the Bible—all as if you were doing it to Jesus? So often we hurry by the hurting faces of Jesus’ brothers and sisters because we consider them beneath us. And yet King Jesus says, “you have done it to me.”

Did you wake up this morning with the realization that today you could do something to minister directly to Jesus? Let that revelation sink in. Live like you take Jesus’ statement seriously. Help the hurting, dust the furniture, teach the Bible, give to the needy, encourage the downcast just the way you would if Jesus was the One you were encountering today. Because He is.(From, “A Good Thing”)

SOWING SEEDS

March 16, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.–Galatians 6:7

When we are born into this world our life is like a empty plot of dirt in which nothing has been planted–just barren ground. But as soon as we reach the age of accountability we become sowers of seed. We then go through life sowing seeds of different sorts here and there. The crop of course depends on the kind of seed we have sown.

Everything we do, whether a thought, a word, or a deed are seeds. Some are good and some are bad, but they all have within them a quality to grow and to reproduce. Those who sow good seeds reap a harvest that is of the same nature. It is the same for those who sow bad seeds. You do not sow seeds of one kind and reap a harvest of another. Whether we shall receive good or bad depends on what we sow. Actions have consequences.

Seeds in and of themselves seem like such small things that we seldom think of them as having great significances, but when the harvest comes there is a mass production of what we sowed. A boys first drink might lead to a miserable life and an early death. The first good deed, however, can sometimes be the impetus for a life of useful service. In every case virtue will have its just reward and vice its due punishment. It is impossible to live without sowing and it’s impossible to sow without reaping. And, what you sow determines what you reap. It is as someone said:

“Sow a thought, reap an act;
Sow an act, reap a habit;
Sow a habit, reap a character;
Sow a character, reap a destiny!”

So–what are you sowing? Remember, you will reap what you sow, more than you sow, and later than you sow. “For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.”( Galatians 6:8). Those who “sow to the wind…shall reap the whirlwind”(Hosea 8:7).

THE MADNESS OF MIRTTH

March 15, 2012 By Pastor David Stone

I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity. I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it?–Ecc. 2:1-2

Solomon’s question bids a challenge to all the masters
of mirth, to produce any one satisfactory fruit which it
affords, if they could.

The hearts of young men usually are much given up
to pleasure. Sensual pleasures are only seeming and
apparent pleasures—but the pains which attend them
are true and real. He who delights in sensual pleasures,
shall find his greatest pleasures become his bitterest
pains. Pleasures pass away as soon as they have
wearied out the body, and leave it as a bunch of
grapes whose juice has been pressed out.

Xerxes, being weary of all pleasures, promised rewards
to the inventors of new pleasures, which being invented,
he nevertheless remained unsatisfied.

As a bee flies from flower to flower and is not satisfied,
and as a sick man moves from one bed to another for
ease, and finds none; so men given up to sensual pleasures
go from one pleasure to another, but can find no contentment,
no satisfaction in their pleasures.(Ecclesiastes 1:8.)

There is a curse of unsatisfiableness, which lies upon the
creature. Honors cannot satisfy the ambitious man, nor riches
the covetous man, nor pleasures the voluptuous man. Man
cannot take off the weariness of one pleasure, by engaging in
another pleasure.

Pleasures seem solid in their pursuit; but are mere
clouds in the enjoyment.

Pleasure is a beautiful harlot sitting in her chariot—
The four wheels are pride, gluttony, lust and foolishness.
The two horses are prosperity and abundance.
The two drivers are idleness and security.
Her attendants and followers are guilt, grief, shame,
    and often death and damnation!

Many great men, and many strong men, and many
rich men, and many hopeful men, and many young
men—have come to their damnation by her; but never
any enjoyed full satisfaction and contentment in her.–

Augustine, before his conversion, could not live without
those pleasures which he much delighted in. But after
his nature was changed, and his heart graciously turned
to the Lord, he said, “Oh! how sweet it is—to be without
those sweet delights!”

And as for lawful pleasures, let me only say this—it is
your wisdom only to touch them, to taste them, and to
use them as you use medicines—to occasionally fortify
yourselves against maladies.

There are no pleasures so delighting, so satisfying, so
ravishing, so engaging, and so abiding—as those which
spring from union and communion with God—as those
which flow from a humble and holy walking with God.
