A DESERT PLACE

November 15, 2008 By Pastor David Stone

“Into a desert place apart” (Matt. 14:13).

“There is no music in a rest, but there is the making of music in it.” In our whole life-melody the music is broken off here and there by “rests,” and we foolishly think we have come to the end of the tune. God sends a time of forced leisure, sickness, disappointed plans, frustrated efforts, and makes a sudden pause in the choral hymn of our lives; and we lament that our voices must be silent, and our part missing in the music which ever goes up to the ear of the Creator. How does the musician read the “rest”? See him beat the time with unvarying count, and catch up the next note true and steady, as if no breaking place had come between.

Not without design does God write the music of our lives. Be it ours to learn the tune, and not be dismayed at the “rests.” They are not to be slurred over, not to be omitted, not to destroy the melody, not to change the keynote. If we look up, God Himself will beat the time for us. With the eye on Him, we shall strike the next note full and clear. If we sadly say to ourselves, “There is no music in a ‘rest,'” let us not forget “there is the making of music in it.” The making of music is often a slow and painful process in this life. How patiently God works to teach us! How long He waits for us to learn the lesson! –Ruskin

NOT FORSAKEN

November 15, 2008 By Pastor David Stone

” Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.”( 2 Cor. 4:9)
Doubts and fears often leave us confused. That’s when we need to turn to God’s Word for reassurance. We must be guided by the facts, rather than our feelings. There are times when we might lose our sense of God’s love, but we can never lose the reality of it. We have blessed assurance that nothing “shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”(Rom.8:39). That glorious fact should cheer up the most troubled heart.
When we find ourself in the furance of affliction we must remember that God’s design is only to remove the dross, making us pure. His great love does not allow Him to do anything that is unjust or harmful to His children. God is never guilty of child abuse or neglect! Although we might forsake Him, He never forsakes us.That gives us hope in the most trying times of life. When we are cast down, and the enemy has his foot on our neck–ready to strike the fatal blow, we can rest assured that the love and power of God will protect us. He will take the worst thing that can happen to us and use it “for good“(Romans 8:28), if we but trust Him.

Faithfulness

November 15, 2008 By Pastor David Stone

“Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.”(1 Cor. 4:2)
Our sinful society is success oriented. There is a never ending stream of books about “success stories” and TV shows tell us about the rich and famous. But God isn’t impressed by all this. He is more concerned about your affection and alligence than He is about your accomplishments. His standard of success is very different from man’s.The world honors success. God crowns faithfulness. It is faithfulness, not fortune and fame, that impresses God.
The wonderful thing about faithfulness is that it requires different things from different people. Those dear saints who are confined to a nursing home aren’t expected to do what others can and should do. Yet they can be just as faithful as others. Age, health, ability, and opportunities are all factors in what God expects people to do.
Do not despair because you can’t do what others can do. We are not in a competition. Do the best you can with what you’ve got and your reward will be great in heaven.Your labor is not in vain in the Lord. Every Christian is a very important part of God’s plan. He has something for each of us to do. Discovering God’s will and doing it will give you a sense of purpose and peace that can’t be found in any other way. Be faithful—you can do it!

Second Chances

November 15, 2008 By Pastor David Stone

J. R. Miller wrote, “If we had but one chance in life it would fare badly with most of us. We do scarcely anything perfectly the first time we try to do it. Nearly always do we fail. Not many lives are lived beautifully, without a break or a lapse, from childhood to age. If, therefore, the opportunity of choosing good came to us only once, and was forever withdrawn, few of us would make anything of our life.”
How thankful we ought to be for second chances! We ought to be glad that the Divine Potter doesn’t throw the clay away. Out of loving patience and with unequalled wisdom and skill He takes the marred vessel and makes “it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.”( Jer. 18:4). History is filled with examples of those who recovered from a fall. Not only did they merely recover, the experience enabled them to minister to others in a unique way. They teach us that failure doesn’t have to be fatal, final. or futile.
Remember this—failing doesn’t make you a failure! Everyone fails, but you aren’t a failure until you give up and refuse to obey God. Failure doesn’t have to be final. With God there is always hope, if we but trust Him. Forget the past. Focus on the future possibilities that are sure to come when we come to God in repentance.

THE FAR LOOK

November 13, 2008 By Pastor David Stone

2Co 4:16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.
 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;
18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal
.
