THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

January 30, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“…the dayspring from on high hath visited us,To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.“–Luke 1:78-79

Having been delivered from the dreadful life of a drunkard this verse is dear to my heart. But regardless of the nature of your sin, the need is the same for all of us. We need Jesus! You might not be a drunk, etc. but if you’ve never been born again you need Christ. He is the only one who can save you. Without Christ there is no help or hope. Consider what J. R. Miller said regarding this matter:

“Suppose the sun were never to rise again, and the light of every star were put out, what a gloomy world this would be! This is the picture of the world, in a moral and spiritual sense, without Christ, as it is painted in these words,   ‘darkness and the shadow of death!’ — no light to guide, to cheer, to produce joy and beauty.

A world without Christ would be utter blackness unilluminated by a single ray of sun or even by a single far-away star. Christ is light. Only think what light does for us! It makes our days very bright; it shows us all the beautiful things that are around us. But it does far more. It produces all the life of the earth, and then nourishes it. There would not be a bud or a root or a leaf were it not for the sun. Nor would there be any beauty, for every lovely thing in nature the sun paints. Think of Christ, then , as light. His love brooding over us causes us to live, and nourishes in us every spiritual grace. Every beam of hope is a ray of light. What the coming of light is to a prisoner in a darkened dungeon, that is the bursting of mercy over the guilty soul. Light gives cheer; and oh what cheer the gospel gives to the mourner, to the poor, to the troubled!

Is it not strange that any will refuse to receive this light? If any one would persist in living in a dark cave, far away from the light of the sun, with only dim candles of his own making to pour a few feeble, flickering beams upon the gloom, we should consider him insane. What shall we say of those who persist in living in the darkness of sin, with no light but the candles of earth’s false hopes to shine upon their soul? There are many such, too. They turn to every ‘will o’ the wisp’ that flashes a little beam, anywhere rather than to Christ. It is like preferring a tallow candle to the sun.” He was right!

I know what darkness is! I have worked underground all day many days and I’ve been in numerous caves where no light could be seen when the flashlight was turned off. I have to tell you–I prefer light to darkness. But I have been in a much worse situation. For years I lived in spiritual darkness, which was dreadful and destructive. But the most wonderful day of my life took place when I received Christ, “the true Light”, as my Lord and Savior! If you are trapped in the dreadful darkness of sin, come to the Light of Life and be at peace. Do it now!–HDS

WHEN YOUR CHILD IS YOUR HERO

January 28, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

Next to your relationship with your spouse your children are closer to your heart than anyone. As parents know well, they can be the cause of great pain or pleasure. Sadly we usually talk more about their failures and the pain than we do about their successes and the pleasure they bring. We need to turn that around. However, this isn’t something that only the parents need to think about. Children themselves need to change their behavior so as to make genuine praise possible. Don’t criticize your parents for criticizing  you if you give them reason to do so. Nobody wants to see you succeed more than mom and dad.

Over the years, being the father of eight children I have had a lot of proud moments. One of the best happened just last week when I learned of an act of kindness by one of our children that thrilled my heart. I won’t mention who or what, but the act was extra-ordinary in my opinion. It was one of those WOW! moments that make you feel proud as a peacock. I wish I could tell the world but it’s better this way.

I mention this mainly as a reminder to parents that it’s not all painful. There is pleasure also, and in some cases more so. As the Psalmist said, “Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them..”(Psa. 127:5). May God help us to focus more on the good. Not only do they need to know that we are proud of them we need to rejoice in knowing that our efforts to raise them right were not in vain. It is thrilling beyond words when you realize than your child is better than you are! We hear a lot about parents being heroes of the children, but sometimes it’s the child who becomes the hero. That’s really special.

I love all my children and I want what is best for all of them. I hurt when they hurt and I rejoice when they are happy. But I am blessed beyond what I am able to describe when I see them obeying God and living out the principles of His Word! Seeing them show their love for God by loving others is a dream come true. And I’ve seen it happen!

Who is you hero? Sgt. York? Audie Murphy? George Washington? Mom? Dad? What if your hero is your child? Wouldn’t that be something? It could happen. In my case it did–more than once! Think about it! —HDS

GOD IS LOVE

January 28, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“…God is love….God is love...”1 John 4:8, 16

The more amazing a truth is the more reluctant people are to believe or receive it– thus the greater the need is to repeat it. So, here we see this glorious truth twice within just a few verses of each other–“God is love“. Sadly many don’t receive or remember it, so we keep repeating it—with joy. How could we ever tire of doing so?

Because God is love He planned our salvation, provided His Son as the sacrifice for our sins, proclaimed the way in the scriptures, and provides His Spirit to counsel, convict, and convert us. Were it not for His love there would be no way to God and we would be forever banished from His presence.

Because God is love, healing, hope, holiness, help, and happiness are possible. Knowing He loves us, even when we don’t love Him, gets our attention as nothing else can. Amazed by so great a love we accept God’s Son and the Father accepts us as His own dear children, making us joint heirs with Jesus. Then afterward we live everyday in the awareness of His blessings throughout the days of our life, until our final and finest day comes when we enter into His presence forever.

It is no wonder that God’s love is the theme of so many songs, poems, and sermons. It is the first thing we teach our children and the last thing on our mind when we are at death’s door. The knowledge and experience of God’s unfailing, undeserved, unending love keeps us going through the toughest times . It is no wonder that the songwriters say so much about it. Living in the light of His love puts a song in your heart. It is greater far than tongue or pen can ever tell and should be on our minds all the day long. — HDS

THE WORTH OF WISDOM

January 28, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“Happy is the man that findeth wisdom….” — Prov 3:13

It is worth our while to study what the Bible says about happiness, and how to get it. All people want to be happy–but most miss the mark.

Yet those who follow the Bible rules for happiness, will never be disappointed. “Happy is the man who finds wisdom.”

Wisdom is a large word. It is not merely knowledge. A man may know so much, that he is a walking encyclopedia, and yet not be happy. He may pursue knowledge into all its nooks and hiding-places, dig it out of the rocks, extract it from the minerals, gather it from flower and plant, draw it down from among the stars–and yet not find happiness. Knowing a great many things–does not make one wise!

Wisdom is knowledge applied to life. He has found wisdom–who has learned to live well. To live well—is to live according to God’s laws, which are summed up in one word, love–love to God and love to man. No one is happy who does not recognize God and do His will. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”

Likewise, no one can be really happy who does not love his fellow-men. Happiness never is found in selfishness. Those who seek happiness in thinking, toiling, and striving only for themselves–will have a vain quest! It never lies that way. He only has found wisdom–who has found rest in Christ.(Copied)

This being true should we not then seek wisdom with our whole heart, even more than health, wealth, and fame? God has provided all we need to be happy, but we have to appropriate what He makes available. That’s why it has been said, “You are just as happy as you choose to be”. Wisdom is the way! –HDS

KNOWING VS DOING

January 26, 2017 By Pastor David Stone

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.“– James 1:22

That is just the trouble with a great many people–they can answer correctly. They know all about their duty. They can repeat with glib tongue, text after text of Scripture. They can recite catechism and creed without missing a word, and like to boast of their thorough familiarity with these sacred formularies. But it is the doing that they fall short in.

They know the commandments–but they fail to keep them. They can quote any number of Bible texts about honesty and truthfulness–yet they are neither honest nor truthful. They like to talk about the love of Christ, which is meek, gentle, patient, and compassionate–but they do not think of getting any of this spirit into their own life!

They recite texts about sending the gospel to the heathen, and make speeches about saving the lost–but neither give money nor make any personal effort to save others!

If doing were as easy as knowing–how blessed we would all be! Would it not be a beautiful thing for us–to try to live all the duty we know?– Copied

“If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” John 13:17
