THE LOVE OF SOULS

April 14, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

Note:The following was written some time ago by Pastor M. J. Seymour, Sr. who is now in poor health and unable to write on a regular basis. Please pray for him.

It is written:  “I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.” (Psalm 142:4)
It is a sad truth; nevertheless it is truth, man cares little for the souls around him.  Every day folks go about their affairs with only one thought in mind – “ME! ME! ME! And no one else but ME!”  “Self” has become the number one priority in the lives of most people.  They are so busy with their own desires that they have lost sight of the poor lost souls around them.  Now, we expect this attitude amongst the lost but prevailing in CHRISTIANS?  How dare it to be so in our midst?  Honest Christianity is not about “self” or the big “I.”

Self-esteem has replaced Spiritualism.  The harsh reality is that we must “die to self,” or we will never be able to gaze beyond “ME” to behold the multitudes lost with no hope, leaving few to care for their eternal souls.  The reason the witness of Christ has grown so cold is that there is no passion for souls in the hearts of those who are only concerned about “SELF.”  Caring about souls requires compassion.

It is also written:  “They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.  He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” (Psalm 126:5-6)
Why do you suppose one goes and sows with weeping?  Honest tears are a language of the heart.  I realize some folk can shed tears at the blink of an eye, but I’m speaking of true tears that come forth because the spiritual burdens of the heart are so overwhelming.  When the burden of lost souls begins to weigh down the heart and mind of the saints, the overflow comes through the eyes, being revealed in tears.  The heavenly burden upon the heart forces out laborers into the fields sowing precious seed and weeping over the insurmountable numbers of lost souls.  Oh, that they could see what we see and hear what we hear of the Redeemer of men’s souls, the Lamb of God.  If only they could be covered by the blood of the blessed Savior by the gracious sovereign act of our God, they would know someone cares.  Is there a real burden in you that overflows the eyes with tears?  Pray for holy tears, brethren!  WEEP FOR THE SOULS OF MEN!!

THE TESTIMONY OF THANKSGIVING

April 13, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“O give thanks unto the LORD; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people.”– Psalm 105:1

Cultivating a thankful heart is the key to overcoming discouragement, grief, pain, or discontentment. If we develop the habit of counting our blessings then we, like Paul, can learn to be content—even joyful—in the darkest of times or most difficult of circumstances.

However, the psalmist here reminds us that the greatest benefit of a grateful heart, and therefore the greatest motivation to a thankful spirit, is not the blessing that it brings to us but the witness it is to others. Anyone can be happy and thankful when everything is going well; but what a testimony it is when God’s people are rejoicing among the ruins of their temporal pleasures!

When a child of God is seen searching through the wreckage of shattered dreams, lost loved ones, or debilitating pain for reasons to praise their Lord it is an unparalleled proof of the power of Christ to transform and to satisfy His people. When they publicly call upon His name, making His deeds known among the masses, the gratefulness of God’s children redounds to the glory of God’s grace.

We are nowhere as able to shine for Christ as in the darkness of our own heartache and loss. In that moment we have the greatest potential to fulfill the greatest purpose of our lives — to exalt the name of our Lord Jesus.

So, no matter what your current circumstances, give thanks to the Lord, calling on the name of Christ as your joy and sufficiency. Make known His goodness among the masses.–Baptist Bible Hour

PERSONAL IS POWERFUL

April 12, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.“–Gal. 5:13-14

I recently received an email from a preacher friend thanking me for sending Morning Manna. He said, “I read your ‘Morning Manna’ every morning as my early morning devotion. I like all of them, but especially the ones from you personally”. My first thought was “Why?”. It’s certainly not because of my ability–which leaves a lot to be desired. With a click of a button he can launch out on the internet and read the works of the best writers in the world. I’m like a preschooler compared to them. So why does he care abut what I write? I didn’t ask him, but I think I know the answer. I believe it’s because of the personal connection. Those kind words came from a dear friend that I have known and loved for many years. I can remember when he started preaching.

I’ve mentioned this because there is a lesson here for all of us. There’s something about our connection with others that can’t be explained. I am often greatly blessed by songs from people who do not have the best voice, and sermons delivered by men who are far from brilliant or eloquent. But they bless me more than others because there is a connection of some kind, and when it is personal it is powerful. That’s something we need to remember.

We each have a circle of friends and acquaintances– people with who we have a connection. God expects us to minister to these folks, to influence them for good. They might not listen to a pastor, even a skillful orator, but they will listen to you. They might never read the great Christian classics, but they will read what you write. They won’t seek help from Dr. Phil, but they will give ear to your advice. They do so because they connect with you in some way.

Several years ago I stood outside the “Louvre” in Paris and declined an invitation to go in. Yes I know what you’re thinking. You can call me crazy if you want to, but the truth is there’s nothing in there of interest to me. I would rather see a real sunset than a picture of one. A picture drawn by one of my grand-kids means more to me than anything in the Louvre. I would rather hear my wife sing than to hear the worlds highest paid entertainer. It’s all about the personal connection and knowing their character.

Listen, you have more influence over people than you think. Use it wisely! Look for opportunities to minister to others and take advantage of them when they come. There is someone who will listen to you when they won’t listen to anyone else. It’s your duty to minister to them, and there are numerous ways to do it. Write a tract, mail a letter, send an email or a text, make a phone call, send a carrier pigeon if you have to, but do something! You will never meet anyone who doesn’t need help of some kind at some time. Let God use you. You will be both blessed and a blessing. That email from my preacher friend means more to me than if I received a letter of commendation from the president. It’s powerful because it is personal. Think about it!

THE RICHES OF RELATIONSHIPS

April 12, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“I thank God upon every remembrance of you.“–Phil. 1:3

This verse has a very special place in my heart. I used it as the text for a farewell message to a church that I dearly loved. Those folks had been such a blessing to me that I couldn’t help but love them. And now, as I look back over the years, more than ever I am thankful for God’s people– wherever they are. They are without a doubt the finest people on earth!

It’s easy to love people who love the Lord. They are so different that you can’t help but notice them. They are so kind, gracious, helpful, etc. that you can’t help but love them. They are like the sunshine after the storm, the fragrance of the rose, the song birds that announce the dawning of the day, a letter from home, etc. They are incredibility delightful. They make life easier, enjoyable, and endurable. But let us never forget that, although we should express appreciation to them, it is God who deserves the glory. He makes them who they are and places them in our life.

As loving as they are, we should never get so overwhelmed by their goodness that we idolize them or credit them for their good qualities to the extent that God gets left out of the picture. That would be a mistake. It is God who should get the glory, not man. Were it not for Him your best friend could very well be your worst enemy.

I shudder to think where I would be were it not for God’s people. The contributions they have made to my life are more than I can number. They have blessed me beyond measure– without me being deserving of a single one. They have loved me unconditionally, blessed me abundantly, and helped me immensely. And I am grateful. But, while I am thankful to them, it is God that I thank for them. Each one is a special gift from God Himself and they are of more value than fortune or fame. I wish for each of them that which Paul expressed at the end of his letter–“The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.“(Phil. 4:23). As you count your blessings today don’t forget to thank God for those He has placed in your life.

WHY JESUS DIED

April 11, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Christ died for the ungodly!” Romans 5:6

In the cross of Christ, God’s hatred to sin is manifested in the most striking light–and the evil of sin is exposed in the most dreadful colors! Now it appears, that such is the divine hatred against all sin, that God can by no means forgive sin, without punishment; and that all the infinite benevolence of His nature towards His creatures cannot prevail upon Him to pardon the least sin–without an adequate atonement. Nay, now it appears that when so malignant and abominable a thing is but imputed to His dear Son, His co-equal, His darling, His favorite–that even He could not escape unpunished–but was made a monument of vindictive justice to all..

What can more strongly expose the evil of sin–than the cross of Christ? Sin is such an intolerably malignant and abominable thing, that even a God of infinite mercy and grace, cannot let the least instance of it pass unpunished! It was not a small thing which could arm God’s justice against the Son of His love. Though He was perfectly innocent in Himself–yet when He was made sin for us–God spared not His own Son–but delivered Him up unto death–the shameful, tormenting, and accursed death of the cross!

Go, you fools, who make a mock at sin! Go and learn its malignity and demerit–at the cross of Jesus!—- What a horrid evil must that be–which has such tremendous consequences, even upon the Darling of Heaven! Oh! what still more dreadful havoc would Sin have made, if it had been punished upon the sinner himself in his own person! Surely all the various miseries which have been inflicted upon our guilty world in all ages, and even all the punishments of Hell–do not so loudly proclaim the terrible desert and malignity of sin–as the cross of Christ! The infinite malignity of sin, and God’s hatred to it, appear nowhere in so striking and dreadful a light–as in the cross of Christ! Let a reasonable creature take but one serious view of that cross–and surely he must ever after tremble at the thought of the least sin!—Samuel Davies
