GOD’S REQUIREMENTS

April 5, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”  Mic 6:8

Micah was a man of the people, and a true patriot. In his day, the political outlook was dark in the extreme, and the prophet felt that one thing only could save his country, and that was a deep and widespread revival of religion. To the inquiry of the people as to whether Jehovah desired the sacrifice of animals, or little children, who were immolated by the heathen people around in order to rid their consciences from sin, the answer came that God required something more spiritual and searching: “He hath shewed thee, o man, what is good, etc.”

Let us make this threefold message our own. To do justly, giving not a fraction less than can be rightly claimed from us. Every one of us must acknowledge the righteous claims of our home-circle, and of our neighbours, and we must adjust these claims, giving each his due.

Let us love mercy. There are some who have perhaps forfeited all claim on our mercy—the prisoner, the fallen, the helpless, our enemies—we must help all these not grudgingly, but cheerfully and willingly. Do not try to love mercy till you begin to show it. Dare to step out into a life of unselfish beneficence, and as you do so, you will come to love it. James insists that pure religion as much consists in visiting the widow and fatherless in their affliction as in keeping oneself unspotted from the world.

Let us also walk humbly with God, not lagging behind, nor running before, but walking with Him, hand in hand. All down the ages, from Enoch onward, there have been those who walked with God in unstained robes. It is not in sacrifices, or rites, or church-going, or alms giving, though these will follow afterwards, but in holy and humble living, that the heart of true religion is realized.

Is that all? No! What is to be done for those who have tried and failed, who are conscious of guilt and sin? In the closing verses of this book is the answer. There we learn that God will not only forgive, but will subdue our iniquities. He will turn again and have compassion upon us, and cast all our sins into the depths of the sea. He delighteth in mercy! Who is a God like unto Thee?

O Lord, may Thy all-powerful grace make me as perfect as Thou hast commanded me to be. Amen.(F.B.Meyer)

Facing the many challenges of our day we keep trying to figure out a way to insure our safety, maintain our prosperity, and save our nation. Yet, as all can see, our best efforts keep failing and things keep getting worse. What to do? It would be a great day if we woke up, turned to the Bible and discovered that the answer was there all the time. Here, summed up in three things, is how we should respond to the world in which we live–regardless of conditions! –HDS

THE DANGER OF CONCEIT

April 4, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.“–Prov. 26:12

This verse begins with a question that would be answered in the affirmative by all. We see such men everywhere, even in places where such men should never be– pulpit, politics, etc. Their inflated ego causes them to think they are wiser than they are. You can’t tell them anything because they think they know everything. As Matthew Henry said, he “has such a conceit of his own abilities as makes him opinionative, dogmatical, and censorious”.

It is not only disgusting to be around such people it is also dangerous, if we pay them heed– which is a real possibility because they can have some very impressive qualities. Such people can be very persuasive, even to the point that others will not only follow their counsel, but will actually try to emulate them. If you don’t believe it just take note of how many young people try to copy their Hollywood idols.

Such a man is not only a danger, he is in danger, as the last half of the verse shows–“there is more hope of a fool than of him.” Fools don’t have much hope, except for the chance that something will happen to make them aware of their folly. However, the chances of the happening to “the man wise in his own conceit” are slim and none. As Spurgeon said, “The fool may learn, but the conceited man will not.  There is more hope of a sinful Publican than of a self-righteous Pharisee.” There is more hope for a stupid man than one who is self-conceited. H. V. Lugt wrote, “ The Lord Jesus reached down to the most despised people of His day—publicans and harlots—and forgave them when they repented. But He condemned self-righteous people and resisted all who didn’t face up to their sin. Refusing to acknowledge sin is a sure ticket to hell! Insisting we don’t need His forgiveness is life’s greatest sin. God can forgive us no matter what we do, but we must repent and turn to Jesus.”

STARVING SPIRITUALLY

April 3, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the Word, that ye may grow thereby.” – 1 Peter 2:2

Can you imagine a conversation like this?
“I’m just so weak I can hardly get out of bed. I just don’t want to go to work, I’m so weak.”
“Well, what’s the matter? Have you been to the doctor?”
“No.”
“Do you have a disease?”
“I don’t think so.”
“What are you eating?”
“Well, I have this restaurant I go to on Sundays—sometimes—if it’s not raining, and I get a meal there. That’s all I eat.”
“You mean that’s all you eat?”
“Yeah, and I’m just so weak.”
Friend, organized worship is just to whet your appetite. If you don’t learn how to feed yourself the Word of God during the week, you will never grow. You’ll be sick and weak spiritually.

Dig in to the abundant nourishment of God’s Word. It will be a source of victory and a source of joy.–Adrian Rogers

I hope our recent experience of reading through Romans 12 each day for a month will whet your appetite to continue the practice, picking a different chapter each month. Although that shouldn’t be all you do, that is a good way to maintain your focus on God’s Word. I heard a lot of testimonies about the blessings gained from reading Rom. 12 and no complaints. If you missed out last month, pick a chapter and and try this for yourself.

TURN YOUR EYES UPON JESUS

April 2, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“Looking unto Jesus…“–Heb. 12:2

Hagar said, “Thou God seest me..”(Gen. 16:13). What a blessed thought to know that God’s attention is focused on us. God is looking at you, there’s no question about that, but are you looking at Him? I ask for good reason. For the Christian I can’t think of anything more important. Looking unto Jesus, considering His person and work, reminds us of His goodness, greatness, and grace. It also reminds us of who we are and what we have in Christ. And that is the key to everything! Looking unto Jesus gives us counsel, confidence, comfort, and courage. We are able to succeed only to the extent that we keep our eyes on Him.

This is why distraction is so dangerous–regardless of the form it takes. Rather than looking unto Jesus many are preoccupied with problems, possessions, pleasure, etc. Even sinless things can become sinful when they cause us to take our eyes off of Jesus. Therefore we dare not allow ourselves to get distracted–by anything.

Everyday people are injured and killed as a result of being distracted– many because they were texting while driving. Yet even more people are adversely affected because they take their eyes off of Jesus. Hopefully you are not among their number. That is a mistake that affects others as well as you. Not only does it cause you to go astray, it causes you to mislead others. For safety sake keep your eyes on Him. If I could have but one plaque hanging on my wall it would be this–“Looking unto Jesus“. That describes exactly how I want to spend my life. Put in a verse it looks like this–“For to me to live is Christ..“(Phil. 1:21). To live like Him I must look to Him–that’s what changes me (2 Cor. 3:18). I look at Him because He is looking at me. The best advice I can give you is this–Keep your eyes on the Lord. He never takes His eyes off you”. The old song said it well,  “Turn you eyes upon Jesus”.

GOD SEES YOU

April 1, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?”--Gen. 16:13

Life can be difficult and frightening. It is common to find yourself in situations where you see no way out. It appears that God doesn’t see you and you feel as though He has forgotten you. It is then that you need to look at the facts, which are stated in God’s Word. That gives us faith to act. In the story of Hagar we learn a valuable lesson. One of God’s names is El Roi, “the God who sees“. Whatever your circumstances, God knows, God cares, and God can help, but you must trust Him. And that will give you the faith to act, to go on when all seems lost.

A wonderful example of this is found in this story  from World War II: “During the terrible days of the Blitz, a father, holding his small son by the hand, ran from a building that had been struck by a bomb. In the front yard was a shell hole. Seeking shelter as quickly as possible, the father jumped into the hole and held up his arms for his son to follow. Terrified, yet hearing his father’s voice telling him to jump, the boy replied, “I can’t see you!”

The father, looking up against the sky tinted red by the burning buildings, called to the silhouette of his son, “But I can see you. Jump!” The boy jumped, because he trusted his father. The Christian faith enables us to face life or meet death, not because we can see, but with the certainty that we are seen; not that we know all the answers, but that we are known.”

I don’t know what you are going through today but God does. Regardless of how things appear or how you feel, God’s eye is on you and you can depend on His promise. Remember, “...The just shall live by faith” (Rom. 1:17), not by sight.
