AID IN AFFLICTION

March 8, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me“– Psalm 119:50

When we feel the despair of sorrow, pain, or loss creeping into our soul and stealing our joy, the last thing that we sometimes feel like doing is sitting down and perusing the Bible. The frustration and grief feel too real, and reading seems too insufficient as a remedy.

But this is the wonder of God’s Word — when we are in the midst of affliction, it is only this Book, with its wonderful promises, startling standards, and exalted view of God, that can give us hope and help and healing. This is because God does not avoid the reality of our suffering, but rather infuses it with purpose and meaning. When we see that God is actively at work in His creation, and is molding His people into the image of His Son, then suddenly suffering takes on a silver lining.

May David’s comfort be your comfort, dear reader, in the midst of your affliction. May God’s Word quicken your crushed and despairing heart. May you see, in the pages of His epistle to you, that His love is just as true and full, His rule is just as good and powerful, and His wisdom is just as perfect and right in our times of affliction as it is in our times of prosperity. –(Baptist Bible Hour)

A SAFE PLACE

March 7, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“My times are in Thy hand..“.–Psalm 31:15

When South African pastor Andrew Murray was visiting England in 1895, he began to suffer pain from a previous back injury. While he was recuperating, his hostess told him of a woman who was in great trouble and wanted to know if he had any counsel for her. Murray said, “Give her this paper which I have been writing for my own [encouragement]. It may be that she will find it helpful.” This is what Murray wrote:

“In time of trouble say: God will keep us by His love. By His grace, we can rest in Him.

First—God brought me here. It is by His will I am in this strait place. In that I will rest.

Next—He will keep me in His love and give me grace in this trial to behave as His child.

Then—He will make the trial a blessing, teaching me lessons He intends me to learn, and working in me the grace He means to bestow.

Last—In His good time He can bring me out again—how and when He knows.

I am here—by God’s appointment, in His keeping, under His training, for His time.”

We want the instant solution, the quick fix, but some things cannot be disposed of so readily; they can only be accepted. God will keep us by His love. By His grace, we can rest in Him.

Dear Lord, it’s hard to endure times of illness and suffering. Comfort me and help me to trust You.

When God permits suffering, He also provides comfort.– Our Daily Bread

INSTRUCTION THAT INSPIRES

March 6, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness“– 2 Timothy 3:16

There’s an old country song called “A Satisfied Mind” that was one of my favorites. Unlike a lot of songs it actually has a great message. The shame is that far too many people are more interested in things that can never satisfy. They prefer riches to righteousness and they pursue them although they never bring peace. If that describes you, listen carefully to these comments from Back To The Bible.

“Righteousness! Is there any finer ambition, nobler aspiration, or loftier aim than this?

God could have given us a book that equipped us to “get rich quick.” He could have given us a text that included all of the scientific information that we would need in order to heal every disease or cure every illness. God could even have given us a copy of the Book of Life, which Revelation tells us contains the names of all His children. (20:15) And yet He determined it to be more important to give us the Bible. Why? Because of what it is able to do.

What can it do? Can it make us wealthy? Yes, with riches that cannot be lost or stolen. Can it treat our illness? Yes, with a balm that ministers to the soul. Can it give us assurance that we will live in Heaven forever? Yes, by describing those to whom eternal life is promised and by instructing us how to live like them.

Apparently God places a higher value on these spiritual qualities than He does upon the material wealth or health that He could have provided us. Should not we do the same? Shouldn’t we lay aside popularity for purity, safety for sanctification, and comfortableness for conformity to Christ? There is no joy more genuine than that of a clean conscience and a satisfied soul. And the Bible gives us instruction on our way to that very end.”

REAL SUCCESS

March 5, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the LORD: that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers. To cast out all thine enemies from before thee, as the LORD hath spoken.”–Deuteronomy 6:18-19

Suffering from terminal cancer at the age of 47, former North Carolina State basketball coach Jim Valvano did an interview where he admitted to being overly obsessed with winning in his younger years. In fact, when he was a young coach at 23, he told his players, “The final score defines you. You lose, you’re a loser. You win, you’re a winner.”

After years of living and countless nights waking up in a cold sweat, shaking from the fever chills of chemotherapy, Valvano changed his perspective on what it meant to be a winner. “It’s effort,” he said, “not result. God, what a great human being I could have been if I’d had that awareness back then.”

There are undoubtedly times in your life when you fail. The breaks simply don’t always go your way. But the question is not how much you fail, but rather how you fail. When you fail, are you failing in obedience? Are you in the will of God? If so, then you can’t be held to blame for the results.

It’s obedience, not results, that really matters in the Christian life. So instead of always trying to succeed, shift your focus toward trying to obey and leave the results up to God. That’s how you’ll find real and lasting success in the spiritual life!

Ask God to help you shift your focus away from the results and onto simple obedience to His will.– Senior Living

SPREADING THE WORD TO THE WORLD

March 4, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them. And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent. And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.”–Luke 4:42–44

The people in Capernaum would have been delighted for Jesus to stay with them. In fact, they begged Him not to leave when it was time for Him to go. They realized that they had benefited greatly by His presence. Yet even at the very beginning of His ministry, Jesus made it clear that the priority of His life and work would be to reach as many people as possible with the gospel. Jesus recognized that He had been given this mission by His Father and as a result, He planned His life around what God had in mind for Him to do: “And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him” (John 8:29).

What was true of Jesus should be true of us as well. We should plan and shape our lives around what matters to God rather than what matters to us. And nothing is more central to God’s purpose and will for our lives than telling others about salvation in Jesus Christ. When the Jewish rulers called the disciples before them to try to make them stop preaching about Jesus, they had to admit the effectiveness of God’s people carrying out God’s plan. “Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine…” (Acts 5:28).

God’s plan to reach the world has not changed—it is still for His children to proclaim the gospel to everyone and to follow His will rather than our own.– Dr. Paul Chappell
