THE BACKSLIDER’S BITTERNESS

February 27, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from himself.“–Prov. 14:14

Sadly it is common to see Christians drift away from God and suffer greatly as a result. And it’s common for people attribute their downfall to troubles and trials that, according to them, left them in a weakened state. But that’s pointing the finger in the wrong place. Their downfall is a problem of the heart, not the hardships. After a storm sweeps through we often see a tree blown over and we attribute it to the strength of the wind. However, if you look closer you will often discover that insects had entered, damaged and weakened the tree. Other trees weathered the same storm, but this one fell–not because of the strength of the wind but because of the unseen insects that weakened the tree.

Even so backsliding is more like a slow-leak, rather than a blowout. We don’t drop into backsliding we drift into it. It usually happens so slowly that no one sees it coming. If we would remember that backsliding starts when growth stops it would help us be better prepared. Mark it down— when we cease to “grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” ( 2 Pet. 3:18) we have backslid. It matters not where we are in comparison to others, when we stop growing we are going backward. There is no such thing as standing still. We are safe only so long as we are growing. When we stop we are in danger. Sin has its own built in punishment–it provides its own pain. The backslider’s own ways will be the well-spring of his misery, the source of his suffering—as opposed to the “good man” who finds satisfaction within himself.

Bruce Hurt wrote, “The danger and deceitfulness of drifting is illustrated by the story of the English explorer, William Edward Parry, who took a crew to the Arctic Ocean. They wanted to go farther north to continue their chartings, so they calculated their location by the stars and started a very difficult and treacherous march north. They walked hour upon hour, and finally, totally exhausted, they stopped. Taking their bearings again from the stars, they discovered that they were farther south than they had been when they started. They had been walking on an ice floe that was moving south faster than they were walking north. Similarly, how easy it is to be out with step with God, thinking we are walking with Him, when in fact we are moving away from Him faster than we were supposedly walking toward Him! Ouch! That is the tragedy of drifting from the truth. Will you (or I) awaken one day (“come to our senses”) to find, that all the time we have been moving imperceptibly in the wrong direction?! C H Spurgeon was right when he said that “The Christian life is very much like climbing a hill of ice. You cannot slide up. You have to cut every step with an ice ax. Only with incessant labor in cutting and chipping can you make any progress. If you want to know how to backslide, leave off going forward. Cease going upward and you will go downward of necessity. You can never stand still.”

OUR SOURCE OF SUPPLY

February 26, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“….all things come of Thee.” – 1 Chronicles 29:14

More than we can ever know, our attitude and actions are affected by gratitude. When a man has a thankful heart he will gladly do as he should without urging or prodding from others. Even his ability to enjoy life depends on whether or not he is thankful. And the key to being grateful is remembering from whence came our blessings. He who forgets that is headed for trouble.

James Smith wrote, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above; creatures apart from God are empty cisterns, dry wells, deceitful brooks. All good dwells in thy God, and flows from Him to thee. Every crumb is from Christ.

What He gives freely, cost Him groans, sweat, and blood, to procure for thee. View Him as the source of all good, and His atonement as the medium through which all flows to thee. He gives thee thy temporal mercies, and thy spiritual blessings; He gives thee also the ability to enjoy them, and employ them for His glory. He directs all events, whether pleasing or painful.
“Be not angry with yourselves,” said Joseph to his brethren; “it is not you, but God.” To Him therefore your mind should be directed in prayer, dependance, and praise.

Look above creatures, and see the Lord’s hand, as did Job, Eli, David, and Paul. Rest with unshaken confidence and filial resignation on His word, power, and providence, and love; ever remembering that all things come of Him. The Lord will give us that which is good, and a blessing with it, if we are looking to, and walking with Him. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above – from Jesus.”

He sank beneath our heavy woes,
To raise us to His throne;
There’s ne’er a gift His hand bestows,
But cost His heart a groan.

HEAR TO BE HEARD

February 25, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“If ye abide in Me, and My Words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you”   (John 15:7).

Some people read this verse and all they see is the part that says, “..ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you”. They’re the ones who say, “name it and claim it”. But we must consider the whole verse to get the truth. It is only if we abide in Him and His Word abides in us that we can have the assurance of answered prayer. We have that confidence because such a person would not knowingly ask for that which is contrary to God’s will, which we know because we have heard His Word.

Charles Spurgeon wrote: “Note well that we must hear Jesus speak if we expect Him to hear us speak. If we have no ear for Christ, He will have no ear for us. In proportion as we hear we shall be heard. Moreover, what is heard must remain, must live in us, and must abide in our character as a force and a power. We must receive the truths which Jesus taught, the precepts which He issued, and the movements of His Spirit within us; or we shall have no power at the Mercy Seat. Suppose our LORD’s words to be received and to abide in us, what a boundless field of privilege is opened up to us! We are to have our will in prayer, because we have already surrendered our will to the LORD’s command. Thus are Elijahs trained to handle the keys of heaven and lock or loose the clouds. One such man is worth a thousand common Christians. Do we humbly desire to be intercessors for the church and the world, and.. to be able to have what we will of the LORD? Then we must bow our ear to the voice of the Well-beloved, treasure up His words, and carefully obey them. He has need to “hearken diligently” who would pray effectually.”

A GREAT LIFE

February 24, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true.“–John 10:41

You may be very discontented with yourself. You are no genius, have no brilliant gifts, and are inconspicuous for any special faculty. Mediocrity is the law of your existence. Your days are remarkable for nothing but sameness and insipidity. Yet you may live a great life.
John did no miracle, but Jesus said that among those born of women there had not appeared a greater than he.
John’s main business was to bear witness to the Light, and this may be yours and mine. John was content to be only a voice, if men would think of Christ.
Be willing to be only a voice, heard but not seen; a mirror whose surface is lost to view, because it reflects the dazzling glory of the sun; a breeze that springs up just before daylight, and says, “The dawn! the dawn!” and then dies away.
Do the commonest and smallest things as beneath His eye. If you must live with uncongenial people, set to their conquest by love. If you have made a great mistake in your life, do not let it becloud all of it; but, locking the secret in your breast, compel it to yield strength and sweetness.
We are doing more good than we know, sowing seeds, starting streamlets, giving men true thoughts of Christ, to which they will refer one day as the first things that started them thinking of Him; and, of my part, I shall be satisfied if no great mausoleum is raised over my grave, but that simple souls shall gather there when I am gone, and say, “He was a good man; he wrought no miracles, but he spake words about Christ, which led me to know Him for myself.”—George Matheson

WEAK BUT STRONG

February 23, 2016 By Pastor David Stone

“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.”–2 Corinthians 12:9-10

Hudson Taylor, the famous missionary and founder of the China Inland Mission, was once complimented by a friend on the impact of his mission work in the Far East. Taylor, being known as a very humble man, answered,

“It seemed to me that God looked over the whole world to find a man who was weak enough to do His work, and when He at last found me, He said, ‘He is weak enough—he’ll do.’ All God’s giants have been weak men who did great things for God because they reckoned on His being with them.”

Taylor’s words ring true today, as they have throughout biblical history. When God looks for people to use, He doesn’t look for the strongest or the smartest, but for the weak and humble in heart. Then God takes those weak people and equips them for His service. In other words, God doesn’t always call the equipped, but He always equips the called.

Perhaps today you see yourself as weak, as if your best days are behind you. That’s a lie from the enemy. The truth is that God will use the weak to do amazing things for Him if they’ll only submit to Him. Let God empower you for His purpose and He’ll use you in profound ways!

Pray and ask God to show you how He wants to use your weaknesses to make a real impact for His Kingdom.(Senior Living)
