CLEANSED BY THE WORD

September 26, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

[How] shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed according to thy word– Psalms 119:9

Sin is spiritual pollution. It corrupts those who come into contact with it and, since we all do, everyone needs to know how to live a life of purity. Fortunately the Bible tells us. We are cleansed by the washing of the Word. If a man bathes but once a year you can bet there will be some evidence of it–an unpleasant experience for those around him. Even so, if we neglect the Bible it will have a negative affect on us and others. Our text tells us how to avoid this. The following from the Baptist Bible Hour provides good insight on this matter:

“The question is revealing. Notice the psalmist doesn’t say, “Why should a young man cleanse his way?” Neither does he ask, “Should a young man cleanse his way?”

He has already moved past the point that so many young people struggle with, which is to question authority and wonder why mental, emotional, and physical purity is so important. He knows that he is sinful and foolish before a holy God. He is not questioning the need to cleanse his way, but is now pursuing the best means to accomplish this.

And how is it to be done? By taking heed to—by internalizing and personalizing—the Word of God. On one hand this may be disappointing, if you hoped for a more entertaining, less demanding solution. Nothing less than an unblinking gaze into the mirror of God’s Word will show you the genuine flaws in your character and mindset.

On the other hand, it is greatly encouraging. The solution you seek for is readily available! You do not have to climb to the top of a mountain in Tibet, or have a certain social or religious pedigree, or attain some academic status in order to know and understand how to purify your life and please God.

The solution is simple, but it is not easy. Take heed to, study hard, God’s Word, the Bible. Make His wisdom your own, and live by it.

ABSOLUTELY RIGHT

September 25, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”- John 14:6

A story is told about two men who lived in a small village and got into a terrible dispute that neither of them could resolve. So one night, the first man went to the town sage and told him his version of the story. When he was finished, the sage said, “You’re absolutely right.”

The next night, the second man went to the sage and told his side of the story. After he’d said his piece, the sage told him, “You’re absolutely right.”

When the second man left, the sage’s wife scolded her husband. “These two men told you different stories, and you told them both they were right. They both can’t be absolutely right!”

The sage turned to his wife and said, “You’re absolutely right.”

In this day and age, more and more people are choosing consensus over truth. Even many spiritual leaders today validate every system of belief as separate paths to God. But the reality is if two people say very opposite things about God, they both can’t be right! (There is no hope in the pope!)

So what gives us confidence that Christianity is the right path? Quite simply, it’s because all other religions teach man how to (try to) reach God, but the Bible teaches that God reached down to us in the person of Jesus Christ.

Jesus is so different than any other spiritual leader. He didn’t come to show the way; He came to be the Way. Trust in Him alone.

Ask God to confirm in your heart that Jesus is the only way to the Father and thank Him for providing a way.(Senior Living)

IT’S REAL

September 24, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“ And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.“–Matthew 10:28

In the 1800s, a well-known agnostic lecturer named Robert G. Ingersoll announced he would be giving an address on hell. Specifically, Ingersoll declared he would conclusively prove that hell was a wild dream of scheming theologians who invented it to terrify people.

As he approached the podium and began launching into his argument, a half-drunken man in the audience stood up and exclaimed, “Make it strong, Bob! There’s a lot of us poor fellows depending on you. If you’re wrong, we are all lost.”

That man’s outburst had so much truth in it. If those who deny the existence of heaven and hell are wrong, then they’re all lost. In fact, it’s quite possible – even probable – that many who argue so passionately against biblical notions of the afterlife do so out of fear, hoping they can stumble on just the right reasoning that will fully convince them they have nothing to worry about.

But heaven is real… and so is hell. We know this because the One who spoke the most about these subjects, Jesus Christ, was raised from the dead as a validation of every single word He preached.

Jesus’ words are true because He is God in the flesh, and God cannot lie. So instead of trying to reason your way out of thinking about the afterlife, trust in Jesus and have full confidence that you’ll escape hell and live with Him forever!-(Senior Living)

A MUCH NEEDED COMMAND

September 23, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and He shall sustain thee….” Psalms 55:22

In referring to our trials and temptations we often use the word “overwhelming”, and they can be, unless we do as we’re told in our text. This is not just an invitation, as sweet as that is. This is a command! It is a command from the highest authority in the universe, to the neediest people on earth, with a promise from the One who cannot lie. Those who feel they are about to be crushed by their burden should cast it on the Lord without delay. James Smith stated the case like this:

“The Lord’s people are often heavy laden, their burdens are heavy and their grief great; but the Lord kindly directs them to cast every burden upon Him, and promises to sustain them. Guilt in the conscience and a sense of sin in the soul, often prove an intolerable burden; but the Lord will remove it by the blood of His Son, and the whisper of His Spirit. The care of a family sinks the spirit, and fills with distress; but Jesus says, “Cast them all on Me.” Losses, crosses, enemies, temptations, and the inward conflict, often burden the soul; but our God will sanctify them to us, sustain us through them, and deliver us out of them all. Our God has determined that we shall use Him, feel our dependance upon Him, and glory only in Him. Believer, He will sustain thee by speaking peace to thy troubled heart; by enabling you to leave your intricate affairs in His hands; by strengthening you with strength in your soul; and by enabling you to contrast the present with the future. Thanks be unto God who giveth us the victory. O Jesus, teach me to bring every burden to Thy feet, and to cast every care upon Thee!”

Thou, O Lord, in tender love,
Wilt all my burdens bear!
Lift my heart to things above,
And fix it ever there!

THE UNSEARCHABLE RICHES OF CHRIST

September 22, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“The unsearchable riches of Christ.–”Ephesians 3:8

My Master has riches beyond the count of arithmetic, the measurement of reason, the dream of imagination, or the eloquence of words. They are unsearchable! You may look, and study, and weigh, but Jesus is a greater Saviour than you think him to be when your thoughts are at the greatest. My Lord is more ready to pardon than you to sin, more able to forgive than you to transgress. My Master is more willing to supply your wants than you are to confess them. Never tolerate low thoughts of my Lord Jesus. When you put the crown on his head, you will only crown him with silver when he deserves gold. My Master has riches of happiness to bestow upon you now. He can make you to lie down in green pastures, and lead you beside still waters. There is no music like the music of his pipe, when he is the Shepherd and you are the sheep, and you lie down at his feet. There is no love like his, neither earth nor heaven can match it. To know Christ and to be found in him—oh! this is life, this is joy…… My Master does not treat his servants churlishly; he gives to them as a king giveth to a king; he gives them two heavens—a heaven below in serving him here, and a heaven above in delighting in him forever. His unsearchable riches will be best known in eternity. He will give you on the way to heaven all you need; your place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks, your bread shall be given you, and your waters shall be sure; but it is there, there, where you shall hear the song of them that triumph, the shout of them that feast, and shall have a face-to-face view of the glorious and beloved One. The unsearchable riches of Christ! This is the tune for the minstrels of earth, and the song for the harpers of heaven. Lord, teach us more and more of Jesus, and we will tell out the good news to others.–Charles Spurgeon
