MORE THAN CONQUERORS

September 21, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”–Romans 8:37
I must admit the phrase “more than conquerors” seemed a bit odd the first time I read it. How is it that we can be “more than” conquerors”? To understand this we must first consider what is meant by “all these things“, and that takes us back to what Paul said earlier in vs. 35-36 where he gives a list or summation of various trials that trouble us. It is as though he is saying we are able to conquer the very worst things that come against us. Paul did and so can we.

Someone said, “Paul was not writing as a speculative theologian. His words here serve as a mini-biography, in that he had already suffered with these trials, except the sword”. Paul is speaking out of the depths of his experience. That ought to encourage us. Now consider why it can be said that we are “more than conquerors”.

I. THE MAGNITUDE OF OUR VICTORY — “more than“

We don’t just win by the “skin of our teeth”. We overwhelmingly over come our enemies. The phrase “we are more than conquerors” comes from a compound Greek word—“hyper” (super) and “nike” (victory). The idea is that we are super victors, super conquerors– able to overcome the stronger most fierce foes possible, the worst situations imaginable. This reminds us that as Christians we are in a warfare. We are called to combat.

II. THE MEANS TO VICTORY —“through Him that loved us”

(A) Through Christ. It is important to realize that we fight from victory rather than for victory. Since Christ has overcome the world we can be of good cheer and great courage, confident that we win (John 16:33).

(B) By faith, rather than human effort.

(C) With good (Rom. 12:20-21)

(D) In “all things”

III. THE MERIT FROM VICTORY

(A) Now–we come out better than before. What we go through refines us.

(B) Later– There are eternal benefits because of it (2 Cor. 4). We receive the spoils of war (Isa. 53:12)

IV. THE MOTIVE

It is all for the glory of God, not personal gain. That’s why we do it with joy!

Although life is difficult we can be conquerors rather than casualties, winners instead of losers, successes instead of failures.

GLANCE OR GAZE?

September 20, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

There is no way to over emphasize the importance of attending church every Sunday, but there is a danger in thinking that’s all you need. Those who know me know that I often make reference to Job 23:12, “I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food” and Heb. 12:2, “Looking unto Jesus“. I repeat these for good reason– most people just don’t get it. Far too many people do not see the need of their “daily bread” in a spiritual sense. They are convinced that what they get on Sunday is sufficient for the week, but they are wrong. If they are going to be “Looking unto Jesus“, as they should, they must change their glance into a gaze. There is never a time when it is okay to not be focused on Christ. Regardless of our condition or the circumstances we are too “consider Him“(Heb. 12:3)

A mere glance at Jesus stirs our senses and thrills our heart, but that is short-lived when our attention is diverted, and there are a lot of things vying for our attention. It’s time we stopped being stirred without being changed, as the song says, and fix our focus firmly on Jesus–at all times. It is only when we behold “as in a glass the glory of the Lord” that we “are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord” (2 Cor. 3:18). Every day should be a changing day in our lives. When Paul gave a list of things to “think on” in Phil. 4:8 they may all be summed up in Christ. Looking unto Him we will enjoy “the peace of God which passeth all understanding” (Phil. 4:7). Remember, we go from glory to glory only when we change our glance into a gaze.

WHAT PRAYER CHANGES

September 19, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“And said, I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments: Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father’s house have sinned.”–Nehemiah 1:5-6

Prayer that gets past the living room ceiling is prayer that recognizes, first and foremost, that God is sovereign and man is nothing more than a servant. Proper praying places God on His throne and mankind at His feet.

Prayer is not having our way with God—it is God having His way with us. Prayer is not our manipulating and controlling God—it is God influencing and controlling us. It is not our putting pressure on God—it is God putting the pressure on us!

If you are not willing to change, to submit, to work, then whatever you do—do not pray!

The great preacher, Donald Grey Barnhouse, once shocked his congregation by beginning a sermon with these words, “Prayer changes nothing.” You could have heard a pin drop. His comment was designed to make Christians think about the sovereignty of God—that God is seated in the heavens and nothing ever surprises Him or falls outside His control.

We’re due a good reminder as well. Prayer isn’t our attempt to bribe, cajole, or convince God to change. In the scriptural accounts that seem to indicate that God changed His mind, the broader context reveals that it was actually part of His sovereign plan. He is unchangeable.

I think Barnhouse’s statement is correct but incomplete. When Nehemiah fell on his knees before God, begging God to show grace to His people, something did change. Was it God’s will? No!  It was Nehemiah’s heart. To Barnhouse’s statement I would add that prayer changes nothing about God . . . but everything about us.

Powerful prayer does not change God’s heart . . . it radically changes ours.

Pray and commit your plans to the authority and will of God, rather than asking Him to make certain things happen. Thank Him for His unchangeable character and faithfulness. ( A Wisdom Retreat)

LESSONS FROM THE LORD

September 18, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud. And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.“–Luke 9:34-35

This is no reason for us to expect to hear God’s voice in the clouds. Since the completion of the Bible He speaks to us through His Word. Like someone said, “If you want to hear the voice of God, read the Bible out loud”. However there is a great lesson in this story for us. God does have a way of communicating with us through circumstances. In commenting on these verses J. R. Miller wrote:

“Many of the sweetest revealings of comfort, are spoken to God’s children out of the clouds of sorrow. Many a Christian learns more about God in a brief season of trouble, than he has learned before in years of earthly prosperity. We would never see the stars—if the sun did not go down. We would never see the promises that gem the Bible pages, like stars in the sky—were there no darkening of the sky of human prosperity and joy. Out of our clouds, too, comes the Father’s voice, saying, “This is my Son.” It is Christ who comes even in the shadow, who for a time hides and darkens his face. HE is in the center of every cloud.

There is significance also, in the message from the cloud, “Listen to him!” We must learn to listen to Christ—and to him only. There are mysteries about Christianity, things hard to be understood—but we may safely wait for the solution of these, meanwhile doing sweetly and quietly the things that Christ bids us do. Hereafter, we shall know.

Rain comes out of clouds, and if there is no rain—all nature suffers. So out of sorrow’s clouds—the rain falls, and our lives are enriched thereby.”

DECISION MAKING

September 17, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind“– 2 Timothy 1:7

Since choices carry consequences we must be careful about our decisions, lest we chart a course that leads to disaster. Staying safe demands making wise decisions. For the Christian that means walking by faith rather than being driven by our fears. The following comments, from the Baptist Bible Hour, gives us wise advice on this matter:

“Fearfulness does not come from God. As children of God, who believe in the perfection and power of Jesus Christ, we don’t need to worry about the future, or fret over circumstances, or be anxious about what others may think.Rather, Paul reminds us, we are to rely upon the power and love and mental soundness that we are granted by God. This is the only way to make God-honoring, God-directed decisions.

In Christ, we know that we will be granted the strength to do anything that He requires of us. Out of love for Christ—and through Him to others—we must be willing to do whatever tends to His glory and their good. And with careful, thoughtful discipline we should therefore chart the course that He directs.

It is so easy to crumble because of conflict, or to surrender because of our situation, or to be paralyzed because of possible problems. But through his admonition to timid Timothy, Paul confronts our natural fearfulness and exhorts us to courageously make wise decisions, out of love for God.

Which paradigm best describes your decision making? Are you most concerned about financial security, or social approval, or selfish pleasure? Or are you walking in paths that are guided by the power of the Spirit, motivated by a love for Christ, and carefully chosen according to faith?”
