HARD WORK AND BAD PAY

August 22, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope:”–Isaiah 5:18

Satan is a liar and sin is deceitful. What we think will be a blessing becomes a burden– or even worse, bonds that enslave us. What appears to be a fine hair or cobweb becomes a cart rope that we cannot break. Way back in 1868, Archibald Brown described the deceitfulness of sin like this:

Suppose a person were to go to a blacksmith and say to him, ‘I want you to make me a long and heavy chain–I will pay you well for it.’ The blacksmith, for the sake of the money, commences it; and after toiling hard for some time, finishes it. The person calls, and says on looking at it, ‘Yes, it is a good chain–but not long enough; work on it another week, I will then call and pay you for it.’ Encouraged by the promise of full reward, the blacksmith toils on, adding link to link. When his employer calls again, he praises him as before–but still insists that ‘the chain is too short.’ ‘But,’ says the blacksmith, ‘I can do no more; my iron is all gone, and my strength too.’

‘Oh then, just add a few more links, the chain will then answer my purpose, and you shall be well paid.’ The blacksmith, with his remaining strength, and last few scraps of iron, adds the last link he can. ‘The chain will now do,’ says the man, ‘you have worked hard and long; I will now pay you your wages.’ And taking the chain, he suddenly binds the blacksmith hand and foot, and casts him into a furnace of fire!

Such are the wages of sin. It promises much–but its reward is damnation!

Servants of sin and Satan, behold your future doom! Be honest, and confess that your service is hard work, and bad pay. God forbid that in this large concourse of people, there should be a single one who will ever learn by bitter, eternal experience that “the wages of sin is death!”

IF YOU MET YOURSELF

August 21, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”–Psalms 139:23-24
It will be worth our while—to think seriously of the things in us—that only God can see. There are sins which are hidden from ourselves, of which our conscience is not aware—our unknown errors. The evil in us which lies too deep to be discovered. There is a SELF in us, which even we ourselves do not see! There are depths of our being—into which our own eyes cannot pierce. You may say that you know of no sins, errors, or faults in yourself, and you may be sincere; still this is not evidence that you are sinless.

Our conscience is not the final court. It is not enough to have the approval of our own heart. There are errors and evils in the holiest life on earth—which only God’s eye can detect. We must ask God to search us, if we would be made clean.

We cannot see our own faults—even as our neighbors can see them. There is wisdom in the wish that we might see ourselves, as others see us—for it would free us from many a blunder and foolish notion.

We are prejudiced in our own favor. We are disposed to be charitable toward our own shortcomings. We make all sorts of allowances for our own faults. We are wonderfully patient with our own weaknesses. We are blind to our own blemishes. We look at our good qualities through magnifying glasses; and at our faults and errors with the lenses reversed—making them appear very small. We see only the best of ourselves.

If you were to meet yourself on the street some morning
—that is, the person God sees you to be—you would probably not recognize yourself!

We remember the little story that the prophet Nathan told King David, about a rich man’s injustice toward a poor man, and how David’s anger flamed up. “This man must die!” cried the king. He did not recognize himself—in the man he so despised, until Nathan quietly said, “You are the man!”

We are all too much like David.

If the true chronicle of your life were written in a book, in the form of a story, and you were to read the chapters over—you probably would not identify the story as your own!

We do not know our real self. We do not imagine there is so much about us that is morally ugly and foul, that is positively wicked. But God searches and knows the innermost and hidden things of our heart!–J R Miller

THE PROMISE OF HIS PRESENCE

August 20, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.” Exodus 33:14

Yesterday I spoke about being “Near to God” and how prayer brings us there. To think that sinful man can be near God who is perfect is a glorious thought. His presence gives us courage to face danger, comfort to endure difficulties, companionship when we are lonely, and counsel when we are confused. Knowing He will never leave nor forsake us changes our outlook on life. Regarding the Lord’s presence, James Smith wrote:

“So the Lord promised Moses, and so He has promised us. Let us never venture any where, if we have reason to think the Lord will not favour us with His presence there. The Lord’s presence produces holiness, imparts power, fires with zeal, brings into union, and often fills with comfort, joy, and peace. His presence is our glory, and it will yield us support under losses, crosses, and bereavements. Let us plead for the Lord’s presence to go with us; let us expect it; let us not be satisfied with anything else. He went with Moses, and he persevered; with Joshua, and he conquered; with David, and he reached the throne; with Paul, and he was more than a conqueror. Nothing can be a substitute for the Lord’s presence; and as it is so graciously promised, let us not attempt to find a substitute, but daily cry, “If Thy presence go not with me, carry me not up hence.” Jesus has said, “If a man love Me, he will keep My words; and My Father will love him, and WE will come unto him, and make our abode with him.”

O Lord, be ever near us,
Fix in our hearts Thy home:
By Thine appearing cheer us,
And let Thy kingdom come:
Fulfil our expectation,
And give our souls to prove,
Thine uttermost salvation,
Thine everlasting love.

NEAR TO GOD

August 19, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.” Psalms 145:18

We sing, “Just a closer walk with Thee”. and we delight in being near to those who are close to God. But how is it that we are able to get close to the Lord? According to our text God draws near to those who go to Him in prayer. James Smith said it well in the following:

“Real prayer is calling upon God. He is our Father: we are His children. We have nothing; He has all things to bestow, and is willing to give them. From a sense of need, we call on the Lord for a supply; from a sense of weakness, we call on Him for strength; from a sense of guilt, we call on Him for pardon. Being diseased, we cry for health; being troubled, for comfort and peace; being in distress, for relief and deliverance. We go out of self to Jesus, accepting His invitation, to plead His promise, and find Him faithful. Our God is always near the praying soul, not merely as the omnipresent Jehovah, but as our faithful Friend. He is near us, lovingly to listen to what we have to lay before Him; mercifully to relieve our miseries, be they what they may; graciously to help in every difficulty or danger. Beloved, our God is near us. He is attentive to us this morning; let us lay all our concerns before Him: He loves to listen to the often-told tale; He has patience with us, blessings for us, and will do us good.”

O Lord, each day renew my strength,
And let me see Thy face at length,
With all Thy people yonder;
With them in heaven Thy love declare,
And sing Thy praise for ever there,
With gratitude and wonder.

TREASURES IN HEAVEN

August 18, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven…“– Matt. 6:20

God does much for us that we can’t do for ourselves, but here is something we must do ourselves and we do it “for” ourselves. When some people think of Christianity all they think about is what it will cost them, what they have to give up. They are so focused on the giving that they forget about the getting. Indeed the Bible does speak about the need for us to give– Jesus didn’t pull any punches when He spoke of the demands of discipleship. He said, “..whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:33). But we must never forget that the value of what is gained far exceeds the cost of what is given! That’s why some speak about “banking in heaven” and “making eternal investments”. As the old song says, “It pays to serve Jesus“.

It is noteworthy that Jesus said, “lay up for yourselves”. Isn’t that great! This is proof that Christ is concerned about your welfare and that it is okay for you to be concerned about it. The key is that we are to lay up “treasures in heaven“, not on earth. The treasures on earth shall all pass away. You will lose them because they will pass from your grasp or you will leave then because you pass– either way, you can’t take them with you. That’s why you don’t see a hearse pulling a U-haul trailer or pockets in a shroud. The only things you will have after you die are the treasures you laid up in heaven.

The famous missionary C. T. Studd said, “Only one life, ’twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last!” Every time you do something for Christ you do something for yourself. When you are faithful to Christ you are doing what is best for yourself. So, be good to yourself! Missionary Jim Elliot said, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose”.
