WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

August 12, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee.“–2 Chron. 1:7

Put yourself in Solomon’s shoes, picture yourself in his place, replace his name with yours—what would you ask for? Would you chose possessions, pleasure, position, power, or praise? If God granted your request would you be satisfied? Just suppose you could–

— walk into the bank and cash a check for any amount.

— indulge in whatever activity that delights you the most.

— enter the White House and pick any office suited to your whims.

— rule over any nation, corporation, or organization that you desire.

— have your name in lights, your picture in the paper, a star in Hollywood, a spot in the Hall of Fame, the masses bowing down at your feet.

Then would you be happy? If so there is something terribly wrong in your life. If your affections are set upon the things of earth rather than things above you are out of step with God. Your priorities are wrong. If you are a Christian you can never be truly happy until the desires of your heart are in line with what God wants for your life. We ought to feel as Paul did when he said, “But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,” (Phil. 3:7-8).

Others have had those things mentioned above and were miserable. If granted to you, you would probably fare no better than they. It is so sad to see multitudes spending their lives in pursuit of things that can never satisfy and are of no eternal value. Christians should do better! Solomon chose wisely. He said, “Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people…”. He chose that which would enable him to fulfill God’s purpose for his life, and it was granted. God help us to do the same!

HEIRS OF THE KINGDOM

August 11, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?“James 2:5

He raised the poor from the dust, and the beggar from the dunghill; such were we by nature, but through rich grace we shall inherit the throne of glory. He has prepared for us, promised to us, and will bestow upon us a kingdom. A kingdom in which His glory will be seen, felt, and enjoyed for ever. In which all His riches of grace, mercy, and glory will be displayed. In which peace, joy, and pleasure will eternally reign. A kingdom which cannot be moved, and will never know a change. But who are the acknowledged heirs? The poor of this world, who are poor in spirit. The rich in faith, who believe in God, in Jesus, who exercise faith on the precious promises, and whose faith is proved to be good by the works they produce. Those who love God from a knowledge of His love to them, and as the effect of His love being shed abroad in their hearts, by the Holy Ghost. Am I an heir? Are you, my friend? If so, rejoice and be exceeding glad; imitate those who through faith and patience now inherit the promises, and the end will crown the whole.(James Smith, 1840)

There shall your eyes with rapture view
The glorious Friend who died for you;
That died to ransom, died to raise
To crowns of joy, and songs of praise;
Jesus, to Thee I breathe my prayer!
Reveal, confirm my interest there.

DELIVERANCE

August 10, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“……O Lord, I beseech Thee, deliver my soul.” Psalms 116:4

Having preached on the subject of Divine Deliverance yesterday, my heart was stirred this morning when I read the following message by James Smith, who wrote this to his congregation about 1840:

The prayer of faith is generally short, and always to the point. It takes the soul and places it before God, in its real state and true character. It pleads with Him for what is really needed, what must be had. The believer often needs deliverance, and faith cries to God for it. His language is, “O Lord, I beseech Thee, deliver my soul from doubts and fears, which continually beset me; from a spirit of bondage, which would daily entangle me; from Satan who worries, harasses, and hinders me; from the sin which so easily besets me; from men who would injure or mislead me; from my own feelings, which daily burden me.” Thus the Lord is acknowledged as the great Deliverer; our own inability is practically confessed; it is evident our trials and troubles are sanctified; the legitimate tendency of grace is discovered by the earnestness, simplicity, importunity, and success of our prayers. Be this our daily cry until deliverance be no longer needed; for our God says, “Call upon Me in the day of trouble, I will deliver thee.”

Oh, for that tenderness of heart
Which bows before the Lord,
Acknowledges how just Thou art,
And trembles at Thy word!
Saviour, to me in pity give
The pledge Thou wilt at last receive.

NEVER CHANGING

August 9, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.“–Malachi 3:6

One of Rembrandt’s final paintings is considered by many to be his finest:  The Return of the Prodigal Son . It illustrates the climax of the parable of Jesus recorded in Luke 15:11-32. The power of that parable is found in the father’s unconditional love for the Prodigal Son who returns home after profligate living. He returns not knowing what to expect—whether the father would still love him or not.

Jesus told the parable to Jews and their leaders whose ancestors had, a few generations earlier, returned from exile in Babylon. Most of them, born in Babylon, had not known the God of their fathers personally. Would He still be angry over the sins that sent Israel into exile? The answer was no: “For I  am the LORD, I do not change.” God’s love is not based on their or our goodness or sinfulness. It is based on God’s choice to love unconditionally. He had told them through Jeremiah that His love was as constant as the universe (Jeremiah 31:35-37). When they returned home to Judah, they discovered God’s love had not changed.

His love does not change toward you either. Rest today in the unchanging nature of God and His love for you.(Turning Point)

Oh, the vast, the boundless treasure of my Lord’s unchanging love!–Robert Robinson

STRENGTH FOR THE SAINTS

August 8, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“The LORD will give strength unto His people….”–Psalms 29:11

Here we see something we all need–“strength“. Regardless of who you are or what great talents you possess, sooner or later you will face something that pushes you to your limit– and beyond. Then you realize how weak you are, and that can be frightening. What will you do? How will you cope? That’s why it is crucial for us to be mindful of God’s promises–especially this one.

Here is a promise you can rely on–” The LORD will”–that’s emphatic. There is no doubt about this. He is “Faithful” and “True”. He cannot lie. This promise comes from God Himself. Notice who it is for–“His people“. God is our Father and He is ever mindful of the needs of His children.. The very hairs on their head are numbered. His all seeing eye is upon them day and night and His ear is open to hear their cry.

Regardless of how powerful the foe, or how fierce the fight, or  how frail the flesh, or how great the fear, we can rest on this promise. It is as He said in Deut. 33:25,”as thy days, so shall thy strength be“. We can entertain great expectations because we rely on His strong arm. We can rest in peace because He supplieth every need. We can rejoice in every trial, because He gives songs in the night. We can resist every temptation because the One who conquered death, hell, and the grave is with us.

If you are a child of God you have special privileges unknown to others. If you are not a part of God’s family you can be by simply trusting Christ as your Lord and Savior. Do it without delay. Then you can live every day with the blessed assurance that not one of His precious promises shall ever fail you. That’s the life!
