THINKING ABOUT PRAYER

June 29, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

As I sit here thinking and praying, I can’t help but think about prayer. Hope that makes sense. I titled today’s Morning Manna “Please Pray”, but that hasn’t scratched my itch. I simply can’t stop thinking about the subject. I feel an overwhelming need for all of us to think more seriously about prayer– and to pray.

As a pastor, and parent, I know things that I’m not at liberty to share with everyone. As I often say, “As you look around the room you would be shocked if you knew what great struggles some people are going through”–boy is that ever true! I know people that are dying and they don’t want their identity revealed. I know others who are going through great fearful trials that others know nothing about. Then of course there are all the other prayer request that are common knowledge –the list never seems to stop growing, and that’s enough to drive you to your knees. You get the picture. We need to pray.

Thinking about our problems is helpful only to an extent. If that is all we do they will become a heavy burden that will weigh us down, crushing our joy and leaving us in a pit of depression. We see the needs everywhere. Now if we only saw the need to actually pray–then we would have reason to believe that things will change for the better. We ought to pray as though everything depends on it—it does! Think about it–then pray!

PLEASE PRAY

June 29, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Call unto Me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not”   (Jeremiah 33:3).

We live in dark, difficult, and dangerous days and these tough times serve to remind us of our great need of God’s help. Is it not wonderful that He stands ready to assist? But it isn’t automatic. God has appointed a means whereby we can receive His aid. That means is prayer. Spurgeon sadi it well when he wrote the following:

“God encourages us to pray. They tell us that prayer is a pious exercise which has no influence except upon the mind engaged in it. We know better. Our experience gives the lie a thousand times over to this infidel assertion. Here Jehovah, the living God, distinctly promises to answer the prayer of His servant. Let us call upon Him again and admit no doubt upon the question of His hearing us and answering us. He that made the ear, shall He not hear? He that gave parents a love to their children, will He not listen to the cries of His own sons and daughters! God will answer His pleading people in their anguish. He has wonders in store for them. What they have never seen, heard of, or dreamed of, He will do for them. He will invent new blessings if needful. He will ransack sea and land to feed them: He will send every angel out of heaven to succor them if their distress requires it. He will astound us with His grace and make us feel that it was never before done in this fashion. All He asks of us is that we will call upon Him. He cannot ask less of us. Let us cheerfully render Him our prayers at once.”

LOVE YOUR ENEMIES

June 28, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

” But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;” —Matthew 5:44

A soldier was astonished when he heard General Robert E. Lee speak in complimentary terms about a fellow officer. “General,” he said, “do you know that the man you spoke so highly of is one of your worst enemies, and that he misses no opportunity to slander you?”

“Yes,” said the General, “but I was asked for my opinion of him, not his of me.”

Lee’s kindness is an inspiring illustration of returning good for evil. Now, I realize that’s not an easy thing to do. In fact, it sometimes seems impossible. That’s why we need to listen to what Jesus said about praying for our enemies (Mt. 5:44). If we obey our Savior in this—that is, if we spend time talking to our heavenly Father about those who treat us badly—it will be much easier to love them and to speak well of them. It would be inconsistent and even unthinkable to mistreat someone we have just remembered in prayer.

Abraham Lincoln once said, “The best way to destroy an enemy is to make him your friend.” With God’s help, therefore, let us love our foes, bless them, do good to them, and pray for them. Like our Lord, let’s be ready to return good for evil—even to our enemies.

When wrongs to me from others come,
From truth let me not stray;
May I love those who persecute,
And for them ever pray.
—Bosch

Returning good for good is commendable; returning good for evil is Christlike.(Our Daily Bread)

LOVING ONE ANOTHER

June 27, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”–1 John 4:7–10

Love—true, godly, sacrificial love—is not a natural human response to others. Many “love” because of what they receive from someone else, yet that is a far cry from the kind of love the Bible commands us to have toward each other. In truth, loving people who are cranky, selfish, demanding, and stubborn (as all of us are from time to time) is not an easy thing. Yet it is what God commands us to do. Such love is not produced by our efforts to change the way we think or feel toward others. It is certainly not based on what they deserve or on what we feel. Love is produced by the Holy Spirit working in our hearts and lives.

Loving others starts with our love for God. He is the source from which our love flows. Just as the moon has no light of its own but reflects the sun’s light, when we love others we are simply expressing the nature and character of God to them. When we fail to demonstrate this kind of love to each other, we are missing the most powerful demonstration of our commitment to follow Him. Jesus said, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35).–Daily in the Word

THE TEST OF VICTORY

June 26, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“David… behaved himself wisely.”–1Samuel 17:55-1Samuel 18:1-5

The hour of victory is a more severe moral test than the hour of defeat. Many a man can brave the perils of adversity who succumbs to the seductions of prosperity. He can stand the cold better than the heat! He is enriched by failure, but “spoiled by success.” To test the real quality of a man, let us regard him just when he has slain Goliath! “David behaved himself wisely”!

He was not “eaten up with pride.”.. He went among his friends as though no Goliath had ever crossed his way. He was not for ever recounting the triumph, and fishing for the compliments of his audience. He “behaved wisely.” So many of us tarnish our victories by the manner in which we display them. We put them into the shop-window, and they become “soiled goods.”

And in this hour of triumph David made a noble friend. In his noonday he found Jonathan, and their hearts were knit to each other in deep and intimate love. It is beautiful when our victories are so nobly borne that they introduce us into higher fellowships, and the friends of heaven become our friends.(Copied)

If we had the attitude of David we would fear no enemy, lose no battle, boast of no victory, and lack no friends of the right kind. That sounds like an example we ought to follow. Regardless of what happens in your life today things will turn out better if you behave yourself wisely.
