THE SOURCE OF OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS

June 7, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Their righteousness is of Me, saith the Lord.”Isaiah 54:17

The longer the Christian lives, the more he learns; and the more the Spirit teaches him, the more he loathes himself and renounces his own righteousness as filthy rags. He hoped sensibly to grow in holiness, to feel his corruptions subdued, and to enjoy without interruption the presence of his God; but instead of this he seems to grow more like Satan, corruption appears to get stronger and stronger, and the depravity of his nature appears so dreadful, that he enjoys scarcely anything. He thinks himself a monster of iniquity, and wonders how God can possibly love him, or show any favor unto him. This experience endears free grace, renders Christ unspeakably precious, and the gift of righteousness invaluable. How can such a man be just before God? Where is his righteousness to come from? Jehovah answers, HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS IS OF ME. Jesus wrought it; the Father imputes it to us; the gospel reveals it; and faith receives it, puts it on, and pleads it before God. O Jesus! in Thee have I righteousness and strength.–James Smith, 1840

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame;
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name;
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand.

LIVING WATER

June 6, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“All my springs are in Thee“. Psalms 87:7

In the Ozarks, where I was raised, it is common to find springs. On many occasions, tired and weary from hunting, I have taken a drink of cool water from a spring and been refreshed by it. That’s why these comments by James Smith caught my eye. People in ancient times depended greatly on water from springs, as a matter of survival, making them a great metaphor of Christ. Think about that as you read the following:

Jesus is the fountain of living water; the wells of salvation are found in His person, work and word; He says, If any man thirst, let him come unto Me and drink. The springs of comfort, peace, and salvation are all in Him; and in Him for us; therefore called our springs. These waters cleanse from all defilement; refresh the faint and weary; and satisfy the longing soul. The springs bespeak plentitude, whosoever will may come and take; for they are never dry. We are absolutely dependant on Jesus, this is our mercy; we are not absolutely dependant on any besides, this is our happiness. Our desires should concentrate in Him; our affections should be fixed upon Him; and our expectations should be only from Him. In Jesus is all possible variety: He can do, and bestow, all we can possibly want; for it hath pleased the Father that in Him should All fulness dwell. If all our springs are in Jesus, let us not then look to any other; but let us with joy draw water out of the fountains of the Saviour. Let us ask, and He will give us LIVING WATER; that we may thirst no more. Only what comes from Jesus can satisfy the soul.

To whom, dear Jesus, oh, to whom
Shall needy sinners flee,
But to Thyself, who bid’st us come?
Our springs are all in Thee:
Now fill my soul with Thy pure love,
And raise my thoughts and hopes above.

CHILD ABUSE

June 5, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

Having just had our annual AWANA Awards, and with the school year ending, camp starting, and Sunday School promotion being Sunday, my mind has been on children. For that reason I thought this would be a good time to address this subject.

One of the characteristics of the last days is that of being “without natural affection“(2 Tim. 3:3), and we see this in numerous ways. One of the most shocking and sad is child abuse–something we see all the time. Some of the things adults do to children are unimaginable, beyond belief, absolutely horrible! But child abuse comes in many forms and different degrees. It is far more common than what people think or are willing to admit. While some forms of child abuse are violations of the law that, as they should, carry stiff penalties, others are more acceptable or unnoticeable, though terribly wrong.

It is the parents responsibility to provide for the needs of their children, in every area. Are you doing that? Really? If you neglect their needs you are abusing them. It might not break the law, lead to your imprisonment, cause your children to be removed from the home, or even raise an eye brow, but it is wrong in God’s sight and you are accountable.

Sadly some parents think they have fulfilled their duties just because they feed, clothe, and shelter their children, but their needs go far beyond the physical. What about their emotional needs, their social skills, their education, their talent development, their life lessons and their spiritual needs? Are those being met? You have a moral mandate, a divine command, to provide these needs. Are you?

We often wonder why children are like they are, but it’s no wonder. The wonder is that they aren’t worse than they are–some don’t stand a chance. Many have been neglected and abused to the point that it is a miracle that they aren’t worse than they are. Many love to quote Eph. 6:1-2 which speaks about children obeying and honoring their parents, but they don’t have much to say about what follows– “provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” (Eph. 6:4). How long has it been since you studied that verse– I mean really studied it? Every parent should be aware of their God-given duties regarding their children, but knowing what to do and doing it is two different things. Some of you could pass an exam on parenting with flying colors, but when it comes to practice you fail miserably.

One of the saddest stories I’ve ever heard was that of a father who was to drop off his infant daughter at a daycare on the way to work. His mind was so preoccupied that he forgot and left her in the car where she died from the excessive heat. That man now has to live with that painful memory for the rest of his life. While that father inadvertently forgot his daughter some parents knowingly neglect their duties and abuse their children in pursuit of their selfish desires. They are so engaged in pleasures, vocation, hobbies, sports and worldly possessions that the children are deprived of their needs–abused. Children need instruction, protection, provisions, affection, assistance, guidance, discipline, and example, but most don’t get it.

The Bible says we are to “bring them up”, not watch them grow up. We are to nourish them, giving them what they need so they will grow as they ought. That requires time, effort, wisdom, patience, and love–lot’s of love. Think about it! Don’t forget the children.

GUARDING THE CASTLE

June 5, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.“–Proverbs 4:23

I heard about a king who lived in a castle in Scotland many years ago that was seemingly invulnerable from the back side. It was built on a cliff and there was a huge gorge behind it. So it was practically impregnable because no army would attempt to scale the cliff behind that castle.

One day the castle was attacked and the king put his entire army on the front side of the castle. Knowing he would do this, the enemy sent a small band of soldiers to climb the cliff and attack the back side of the castle. Once they were in, the king’s army was divided, the attack came full-on from the front, and the castle was taken.

How could that have happened? Well, the king protected their weakness – the front – but he didn’t protect his strength. In much the same way, men and women of God today see themselves as impervious to some sins. “I’d never cheat on my spouse,” they say. Or, “There’s no way I could ever…” fill in the blank. Yet these same people get caught up in those very sins because they leave them unguarded.

Don’t leave your strengths unguarded.  Keep watch at all times as temptation comes you way. Guard the castle of your heart and you’ll be equipped to fight off every sin. (Daily Word)

AMAZING

June 4, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.” Gal. 2:21

I recently heard an amazing rendition of Amazing Grace sung by one of my favorite groups (Celtic Men). It was as good as I’ve ever heard, but I couldn’t help but wonder where they stand with the Lord. Anyone can sing Amazing Grace and just about everyone in our part of the world has– even many who give no evidence of being a Christian. But until a person has actually accepted God’s grace through Christ he cannot fully appreciate it.

God’s grace is beyond our ability to comprehend, more marvelous than the mind can imagine, more amazing than words can describe, and available to whosoever will receive it. It is, well, “amazing”–what more can I say? But there is something else that is truly amazing, yet seldom discussed. It is amazing that anyone would refuse, set aside, nullify the grace of God! How they could possibly turn their back on the most precious thing in the world is beyond me.

To reject God’s grace is not only shocking it is sinful. It is amazing and awful! It is to treat the blood of Christ as a worthless thing. It is an insult to and rebellion against God. God has extended His grace to all and has “commanded all men everywhere to repent” (Acts 17:30). Consequently every person who despises His grace, dishonors His Son, and disobeys His command is a rebel against God. Even if you did your best to keep the moral law, stayed busy doing good deeds, and gave every penny to charity, your rejection of Christ proves you are a sinner. Refusing His grace is worse than anything else you could have done. That is the very sin that condemns you to a lake of fire for eternity.

Not only is this sinful, it is stupid– the dumbest thing you could ever do! What could be more foolish than to reject God’s forgiveness, refuse God’s gift of eternal life, resent the grace of God, rebel against the command of God, resist the Spirit of God, and remain in your lost estate? Why would you do that? God’s grace is freely bestowed upon all who believe. It is there for the taking. Don’t refuse it. His grace will meet your deepest need, bring your greatest joy, provide perfect peace and bring about a glorious transformation. To refuse amazing grace is amazing! Think about it!
