WHAT IS MAN?

May 14, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Lord, what is man!”Psalms 144:3

By nature he is an enemy to God, in open rebellion against Him, and justly condemned by Him. He is in love with sin, a slave to lust, a servant of Satan. He is blind to his best interest, deaf to the call of God, and dead in trespasses and sins. He is an open sepulchre, a mass of wretchedness and disease, abominable and filthy beyond description. And can such a creature be the object of Jehovah’s love, the purchase of a Saviour’s blood and the habitation of the Holy Spirit? Yes…….Jesus was sent into the world to redeem them–the Holy Spirit came to quicken, cleanse, justify, and save them! O amazing grace! Astonishing mercy! And will God in very deed dwell with such creatures upon earth? Yes: “To this man will I look, and with him will I dwell, even that is poor, and of a contrite spirit, and that trembleth at My word.” Well may the patriarch exclaim, “What is man, that Thou shouldest magnify him? and that Thou shouldest set Thine heart upon him?’—–James Smith

O what is feeble, dying man,
Or any of his race,
That God should make it His concern
To visit him with grace!
That God, who darts His lightnings down,
Who shakes the worlds above,
And mountains tremble at His frown,
How wondrous is His love!

THE MOST IMPORTANT IMPERATIVE

May 13, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

Nothing ever written or said by man is more important than this one thing—“ye must be born again“–John 3:7. The fact that these words were spoken by Jesus Christ tells us this is important, true, and deserving of our attention. When He speaks we ought to listen. We should listen not only because of the speaker, but also because of the subject.

The Lord was speaking about a spiritual birth–what every man needs most. By nature we are spiritually dead—separated from God, condemned and without hope. The new birth reconciles us to God and we receive eternal life. It makes the difference between heaven and hell, so it makes no sense that we refuse  to listen. It is essential that we understand exactly what the new birth is.

Jesus clearly taught that the new birth is a work of God, not an accomplishment of man. It is the impartation of spiritual life by the power of the Holy Spirit to all who receive Christ as their Lord and Savior. Those who receive Him are accepted by God because their sins are forgiven on His behalf . When He died on the cross He paid our sin debt. He was raised from the dead for our justification. By His grace, salvation is offered as a gift to all who are willing to trust Him. You can do that! All it takes is simple child-like faith to receive the greatest gift possible. We aren’t saved because we give up certain sins, do good deeds, or contribute to worthy causes. It is a gift, not a wage or reward. Although secured at great cost to God it cost you nothing.

As a gift salvation is received, not earned. We are saved by grace not goodness, mercy not merit, atonement not attainment, believing not behaving. Adding to the wonder of this is the fact that God is willing to save “whosoever“– anyone and everyone who truly believes. Regardless of who you are or what you’ve done, you can be forgiven, cleansed, accepted by God, delivered from wrath, and adopted into God’s family. In Christ, God has provided exactly what you need and everything you need. And for you it is all free—paid for for by the precious blood of Jesus!

Seeing that God cannot lie, why would you—

reject such an offer?

deny the importance of the matter?

consider anything else as an option?

turn away such a gracious gift?

wait until a later date?

expect Christians to remain silent?

resist or resent the efforts of those pointing you to Christ?

Salvation is by far the greatest gift a person can ever receive, the most delightful discovery they ever make, the most important thing in life, the most exciting experience you can have, the most valuable thing you can possess, the surest thing on earth, the greatest miracle ever. How can you expect a person who has received such a wonderful gift to remain silent about it? The fact that they desire to tell you how much God cares is an evidence that they care about you. This could be the greatest day of your life if you are willing to trust God to do as He promised. If you are confused please contact a Christian. They would be delighted to help.

SALVATION

May 12, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”–Acts 4:10-12

Salvation is . . .
the greatest blessing that God can bestow;
deliverance from the greatest misery;
exaltation to the greatest happiness;
the greatest change in man’s state and character which can possibly be effected;
the greatest display of the love, wisdom, grace, and power of God!

Salvation is the very blessing that you need. The blessing which you must receive — or be eternally undone!

Salvation is a blessing for the PRESENT, for it is deliverance . . .
from the guilt of sin — which makes you miserable;
from the power of sin — which makes you unholy; and
from the love of sin — which proves you to be God’s enemy.

Salvation is a blessing for the FUTURE: it secures to you safety and happiness in time — and glory, honor, immortality, and eternal life when time shall be no more!

Salvation is a blessing which comprehends every other blessing.
If the man is saved — then all good things are his.
If the man is lost — then nothing good is his.
To be saved, is . . .
for the soul to be restored to a right relationship to God;
to be put in possession of unsearchable wealth;
to be raised to the highest honor; and
to be entitled to eternal glory!

No word is as sweet as salvation — as no word is as dreadful as its opposite, damnation!—- there is no intermediate state between these two extremes.(James Smith)

REALIZING THE REASONS TO REJOICE

May 11, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Rejoice alway” ( Phil. 4:4).
It is amazing how easily we dismiss this command as though it is impossible. Everyone is concerned about happiness, but few ever take any steps to secure it. What about you? Have you ever spent a morning examining all that the Bible has to say about happiness, gladness, joy, and rejoicing? You will be amazed by the large number of verses pertaining to the subject. Not only will you be impressed by the number of references to it, you will be enlightened as to what all is said about it. You will learn about the importance of it, the benefits from it, the cause for it, and the hindrances to it.

Sadly many try to excuse themselves for being unhappy. They are quick to give you a list of reasons as to why they are miserable. Rather than looking for for reasons to rejoice they are intent on finding excuses to justify their unhappiness. In doing this they convince themselves that, considering the circumstances, it is impossible to be truly happy. They think of it as mere wishful thinking, rather than a glorious possibility. They are like the fellow who said he was planning for a nervous breakdown because he deserved it. We seem to have forgotten that we are to pray that God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven. If heaven is a place of perpetual joy, should that not be what God desires for us while we’re here on earth?

I’m not writing this to tell you what the Bible says about this, but to tell you that the Bible tells you about it. And since what the Bible says is more important than what I say about the Bible, I encourage you to go directly to God’s Word and see for yourself what it says. If happiness is as important as you say it is, surely it would be time well spent if you set aside some time discovering what God says about it. I can give you no better advice than this—search the Scriptures! It will change your life! Start today. Put-off whatever you planned for the day and spend a few hours considering what God says about the nature of joy and the need to rejoice. I can’t think of a better way to spend a day.

A MOTHER’S INFLUENCE IN MY LIFE

May 10, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

Mother’s Day is a time when emotions run high. Some weep as they remember their dearly departed mother, and many will weep for other related reasons–some good and some bad. Mother’s Day reminds us of the blessings mothers are and how indebted we are to them. I want to add to that chorus of praise by speaking of a mother’s influence in my life.

I owe more to a mother than to any other person on earth. Notice, I said “a” mother, not “my” mother. While I loved my mother dearly and I’m truly indebted for her contributions to my life, there is another mother who has been an even greater blessing in my life–  my wife, the mother of my children. Not only has she influenced the lives of our eight children, she has been the greatest transforming power on earth to me.

After 55 years of marriage I can honestly say that nobody on earth has had such a great influence on my life. When I thought I had something all figured out she was bold enough to question me and wise enough to give me a different perspective. When I have been at my worst she has been at her best. She has forgiven me fully and loved me freely, and followed me loyally. When discouraged she was my bright light of encouragement. When hurt she has been a soft-shoulder to cry on. When I failed she has been a strong arm to help me up. And the list could go on and on.

Yet, for all she has done, she has never requested or received the praise she deserves. She has been a loving mother, a faithful spouse, a dedicated pastor’s wife, and my best friend. How can you possibly give a person like this the praise they deserve? You can’t– but you can try. So, this is my feeble effort to tell you a little about the wonderful mother who has had the greatest influence in my life– my children’s mother. I owe a lot to my mom, dad, one and only pastor, preacher friends, and supportive church members, but no one has been so helpful to me as the mother who is my wife.

It is a sad fact that many mothers fail to get the praise they deserve from their children–hopefully it isn’t because of the father’s failure to honor his wife. Husbands of godly mothers should do all they can to express their love and appreciation for their children’s mother. Happy Mother’s Day!
