THE COMMANDMENT WITH A PROMISE

May 10, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“…in the last days, perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection…having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.” – 2 Timothy 3:1-5

“Without natural affection” literally means “without family love.” If you claim to be a Christian but dishonor your parents, all you’ve got is a form of godliness. You don’t have the real thing. Faith begins at home. If you can live for Jesus at home, you can live for Jesus anywhere. If you can’t live for Jesus at home, it doesn’t really matter where you try to live for Jesus.

God gave Ten Commandments, but the fifth, “Honor your father and mother,” is the one with a promise: “that it may be well with thee and that thou mayest live long on the earth.” Before God tells us don’t steal, don’t kill, don’t commit adultery, He tells us to honor father and mother. In my estimation, the respect and obedience a child shows his parents is a strong indication of how the child will turn out. Dwight Moody said, “I’ve lived 60 years, and I’ve learned one thing if I’ve learned nothing else. No man or woman who dishonors father or mother ever prospers.” ( Adrian Rogers)

THE IMPORTANCE OF STICKING TOGETHER

May 9, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.”—1 Corinthians 1:10–12

In 1776 the members of the Continental Congress came together to sign the Declaration of Independence, committing the fledgling United States to war with England. Many people had grave doubts about the future of their cause. The only hope for success was that the disparate colonies with their divergent interests and needs work together. As Benjamin Franklin put it when he prepared to affix his name to the Declaration, “We must, indeed, all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.” Those words were not dramatic license. The penalty for failure was severe, and the only way to avoid that was to join forces.

As Christians, we face a powerful enemy who is committed to our destruction. Satan is looking for a weak spot in your defenses that will allow him to strike. If you resist today, he will be back tomorrow. The reality of this opposition highlights the importance of God’s people encouraging each other to resist the enemy and win the victory.

Satan knows that if he can separate a Christian from the fellowship and teaching of his church, it will be much easier to defeat him. Lions rarely hunt prey that is in the middle of a herd, even of mostly defenseless animals. Instead they focus on the stragglers—those who have strayed or fallen behind from the group. Those are the easy targets.(Daily in the Word)

PRAYING ALWAYS

May 8, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit“– Ephesians 6:18

Remember to pray often. Paul here says we are to be praying always. He admonished the church at Thessalonica to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). This indicates that our whole life is to be constantly bathed in prayer.

There should be thanksgiving, confession and supplication in every part of our day. Every decision should be made prayerfully. Every undertaking in God’s service should be approached with prayer. We all know the importance of prayer; but so often we are not as concerned as we should be that our prayer life is not what it should be — we need the reminder, “Don’t forget to pray.”

Remember, also, that you are being heard. Sometimes the complaint is made that, “I just don’t feel my prayers go anywhere, I don’t feel they are being heard.” But Jesus promised that when we knock it shall be opened. The answer comes in God’s own way and on His timetable but we are encouraged to keep asking and knocking.

Remember how to pray. Prayers are to be in the Spirit. Selfish prayers will not be heard. Requests that are not in harmony with God’s will, as revealed in His Word, will not be heard. But the prayer offered up in the Spirit will be heard.

The very thought that your feeble cry can actually be heard in the throne room of Heaven should be adequate incentive to keep you regularly coming to the throne of grace to find mercy and help in time of need.( BBH)

Since we are commanded and invited to always pray we are always in need of it. Regardless of how well things seem to be going, there is never a moment when we are without need of God’s help. Without Him we can do nothing.—HDS

THE VITAL ROLE OF PRAYER

May 7, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving; Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds: That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak. Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.”Colossians 4:2–5

From his prison cell in Rome, Paul was inspired by the Holy Spirit to write a letter to the church in the Greek city of Colosse. Unlike his other epistles, this one was written to people he had never met. The church there had been established by others, but Paul was concerned for their spiritual growth and development. Over and over this brief letter talks about the importance of prayer. When we think of Paul’s condition at the time, there were many things for which he could have asked. Yet his greatest concern was that this church would pray for him. It is impossible to overstate the importance of prayer to the Christian life and ministry.

It is said that the great Scottish preacher Andrew Bonar had this reminder visible in his study: “He who has truly prayed has completed half of his study.” The tragedy of prayer is that while it is so important, it is easily overlooked. We find our schedules filled and our days packed with events and programs—many of them good and important—and prayer gets pushed aside.

Yet without prayer we lack the strength and resources needed to do God’s work and live the Christian life. Prayer is not a few rote words mumbled over meals or before bed. Prayer is a conversation with God that takes place throughout the day and throughout our lives. It is not an occasional thing but a continual and repeated process through which we pour out our hearts to our loving Father in Heaven.

Regular, fervent, meaningful prayer is the foundation of our work and ministry for Jesus Christ.–Paul Chappell

PERSISTENT PRAYER

May 6, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Pray without ceasing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17

The longer I live, the older I get, the more I struggle and observe others bearing their heavy burdens, the more I study God’s Word the more I realize the importance of prayer. We can’t survive and thrive without it. Evidently James Smith was feeling the same way when he wrote the following to his church  in 1840:

“In prayer we must approach God as a Father, ask of Him what we really need, and expect to receive according to His wisdom and word. Our wants are constantly returning, therefore our prayers should be constantly ascending. The ear of God is always open. He is ever ready to listen to us. He invites, exhorts, and commands us to pray always, in everything. Every object that meets the eye, every circumstance that occurs, every employment in which we engage, would afford matter for prayer if properly viewed. The believer should acquire the habit of prayer. He should look up to his God for all he needs, through all he sees, whenever he has a moment to spare. The prayers of a Christian are pleasant to his God; He says, Let me hear thy voice, let me see thy countenance; for sweet is thy voice and thy countenance is comely. The believer should pray as naturally and as constantly as he breathes; for prayer is the breath of the soul. Beloved, if prayer dwindle into a mere duty, is but occasionally offered, or become burdensome, it is clear that you are in a most unhealthy state.”

Through the skies when the thunder is hurl’d,
The child to its parent will flee;
Thus, amid the rebukes of the world,
I turn, O my Father, to Thee;
The spirit of prayer in Thy mercy impart,
And take up Thy constant abode in my heart.
