THE PROMISE OF POWER

March 28, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“He giveth power to the faint.” Isaiah 40:29

The Lord’s people often feel faint, being burdened with a body of sin and death, pursued and assaulted by Satan, tried and hindered by the world; but though faint they continue to pursue. Waiting on the Lord they renew their strength. The Lord has said, “I will strengthen thee.” Brother, remember the promise and faithfulness of thy God; yield not to fear, or you will surely faint. Believe because God is true. David says, “I had fainted unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” Power is given in answer to prayer. Strength is proportioned to the day. The back is fitted for the burden. Our God will not lay upon us more than He will enable us to bear. He strengthens by His word, by His Spirit, and by His presence; expect Him to be and to do according to His word; this will honour Him, and He will strengthen you with might by His Spirit in the inner man. Go forth, however weak you may feel, assured that God will give you strength and courage; strength to do and suffer His will, and courage to face, fight and overcome every foe. (James Smith, 1840))

Whence do our mournful thoughts arise?
And where’s our courage fled?
Have restless sin, and raging hell.
Struck all our comforts dead?
Chase, chase thy gloomy fears away,
Strength shall be equal to thy day.

TO REIGNITE YOUR LOVE

September 29, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

I just finished reading an article entitled, “10 Ways to Reignite your Love for the Church”. The ten things are as follows:
1. Read 1 Cor.
2. Read the Gospel of Mark to see the Portrayal of Jesus’ disciples.
3. Check your heart.
4. Count your supporters.
5. Take a vacation.
6. Take some folks on a mission trip.
7. Hang out with a few members who want to grow.
8. Get a vision about something in the church.
9. Seek reconciliation with that person.
10. Keep doing ministry.

There are some good ideas on that list, but at the risk of sounding critical, I believe we can reduce the list to one thing— which isn’t even mentioned. The one thing of which I speak is this— renew your love for Christ! That will correct the problem. When we love Christ as we should we will love the church as we ought. This of course raises the “How?” question. Here’s the answer– “To renew your love for Christ review His love for you” and that will reignite your love for the church. If that doesn’t work nothing will. We love Him because He first loved us, and the more we focus on His love for us the greater our love will grow –for Him and His. Think about it!

LIGHT IN THE NIGHT

March 27, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

” Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot * be hid . Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.“Matt. 5:14-15

James Dobson told a story about a friend who was flying his single-engine plane toward a small rural airport.  When he arrived at the close of the day, the sun had already dropped behind the mountain.  By the time he had maneuvered into position to land, he couldn’t see the shadowy field below.  There was no one on duty at the airport, and there were no lights on the plane.

The pilot circled the runway for another attempted landing, but the darkness had become even more impenetrable.  For two hours he flew around in the inky blackness, knowing full well that he faced certain death when his fuel tank emptied.

Then, as panic began to seize him, a wonderful thing happened.  Someone who lived near the airport had heard the continuous drone of a small plane engine and realized there was a problem.  That kind, merciful man raced to the airport and drove his car back and forth on the runway to indicate the direction of the airstrip. He then drove to the far end of the runway, positioned his lights, and turned them on high beam, to shine down the stretch of tarmac.

The pilot landed safely.

Being caught ill-equipped in darkness can be disastrous. Darkness can be dreadful, dangerous, and deadly. Thankfully God has given us light in the person of Christ (2 Cor. 4:6), so, we need not walk in the darkness. As Stephen Davey said, “This Light that He gave us is Himself….Jesus tells His disciples that He is the Light of the World (John 8:12). In the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5, Jesus Christ tells His disciples that they are the light of the world. This is to say that Christ puts His Light in us.  This He does by giving us Himself.

Because God has given Himself to us, we in turn bear witness of God to others. What if the man who had illuminated the runway had decided to stay home?

The souls of the world hang in the balance, and without Jesus Christ, the Light of the World, they are destined to remain in the darkness—without God . . . without hope.

Grab your keys; start the engine; turn on the headlights—someone’s in trouble.  Don’t make him circle the field again!  Light up the runway . . . bring him in for a safe landing!

Pray that God will give you opportunity to share Christ with others.  Pray that you will have the courage to shine brightly.”

HAPPY HERE

September 15, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.“–John 17:15

The greatness of God’s love is seen in several ways– the communications we have received, the commandments He has given, the crucifixion of Christ, the compassion shown by Christ, etc. But there is another way, which generally gets overlooked, and that is the commission to the church. Jesus sent His followers to Jerusalem, knowing they would be persecuted, and then commanded them to continue on into the whole world, subjecting them to great hardships for the sake of winning the lost. The same One who sent His own dear Son, to give His life for us, also sends His children into the world like sheep among the wolves. That has to be love.

God’s children are not here by accident. Whatever times we live in is the time of which it can be said, we were born “for such a time as this”, and those times can be tough. Jesus knew the apostles would be hated and persecuted and that heaven would be a sweet relief, but He said, “I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world”. Taking them out would mean that they could escape the trials and enter the joy of the Lord, yet Christ prays for them to remain, which meant suffering. Why would He do that?

We can only account for this by considering the importance of their mission. He left them here that He might send them to the world (John 17:18). Others would come to believe on Christ “through their word” (John 17:20) and that made their suffering worth the price they paid. After all, Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice to save the lost. What right did they, or we, have to complain about the hardness of the way? Should our life be spared, considering that He spared not His life for us?

In times of desperation many pray to die, or for the Lord to come. Trying to sound spiritual, they might say they did so because they wanted to be with the Lord, but the real reason is that they want to be rid of their troubles and trials. While Paul said to die would be “far better” (Phil. 1:23) he also said it is “more needful” (Phil. 1:24) that we remain in this world until the time of God’s own choosing when He will call us home. To die is gain, to live is grief, but to stay and suffer for the good of others is glory, and that should be our desire. That’s something worth living for! And that should make us happy here.

Looking at the rest of our text, it’s obvious that Christ knew we would struggle with this, so He prays, “but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil”. You can rest assured that, whatever hardships you face in the pursuit of God’s will, the grace of God will keep you. It is sufficient for every need. Christ never said it would be easy, but He did promise that He would enable us. So, let us not complain about the hardness of the way, but rather focus on Christ, and busy ourselves in fulfilling our mission, so as to glorify God. God proved how much He loves the world by giving His Son and by allowing His children to suffer, let us prove how much we love God by being willing to suffer for His sake.

Christ loves lost sinners so much that He put His people in harms way in order to save them. As a parent I cannot imagine allowing my children to suffer horribly for the sake of helping someone who hates me, yet that is precisely what God has done. We can’t understand it because we can’t comprehend the wrath of God, nor fathom the greatness of His love. However, we can know that He isn’t asking us to do anything for Him that He wasn’t willing to do for us. May God help us to have the attitude of Esther. When Mordecai asked, “who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”, she responded by saying, “I go….and if I perish, I perish”(Est. 5:16). If you are afraid to make a commitment such as that, remember the words of  David, “My times are in thy hand”(Ps. 31:15). You couldn’t be in a better place than that! Never forget– we are here for Him. Whatever “here” might mean to you that’s exactly where you ought to be, and you ought to be happy here. Think about it!

STRENGTH RENEWED

March 26, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

Even the youths shall faint and be weary…but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength – Isaiah 40:30-31

It’s hard to imagine a two-year-old getting tired. They seem to have endless energy and they only have two speeds: fast and faster. When you try to put them to bed, they deny all the way there that they are in need of even a nap. But the moment their head hits the pillow, they fall into a deep and much-needed slumber.

Even the youths shall faint and be weary. And certainly all the rest of us have constant reminders of our limitations. Try going a day without coffee, or a night without sleep, or on a run without water. We are every one of us in need of constant refreshment, because we are not self-contained or autonomous creatures.

What is true of us all physically is even more evident spiritually. No one walks this earth in self-supplied satisfaction. Although we do not always go to the right source, we are always looking for a spring of spiritual renewal somewhere, to which we can come and deeply drink and consistently return.

Those that wait on the Lord, who look to Him for refreshing or allow Him to restore their souls, find that His supply is never empty, His sufficiency never runs dry. Young or old, rich or poor, sick or healthy — God is able to supply our needs, not just for a moment, but over and over throughout our lives.

They that wait on the Lord will renew their strength. Are you waiting on His good purpose, on His good timing, on His good supply…or are you still running in circles, denying that you are even in need of rest or refreshment? Lay your head on the pillow of God’s grace and find the deep and much-needed renewal that only He will provide.(Baptist Bible Hour}
