THE SONS OF GOD

March 11, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Beloved now are we the sons of God.” 1 John 3:2
Over nearly 50 years I have preached from this text on many occasions and have been an eye witness to the great affect it has had on people. This morning I read for the first time what James Smith wrote about it in 1840 and it was as though I was reading my own notes. That served to remind me that God’s Word never changes and it forever changes those who receive it.

“What surprising grace is this! For what are we? Poor, vile, depraved, unworthy sinners. So base by nature that we had not one redeeming quality, and even now, apart from the work of the Spirit, there is in us no good thing. But– we were born again of the Spirit; and grace has put us among the children, for its own glorification. Beloved, now, while we feel so much corruption, while despised by the world, harassed by Satan, tormented with fears, NOW are we the sons of God. And will God neglect or disregard His beloved sons? No: let us then cherish the thought, believe the fact, and rejoice in the relationship. Let us walk and act as the sons of God, coming out from among the formal, the self-righteous, and the profane; and devoting ourselves entirely to the Lord’s service and glory. Let us remember in trouble, in sickness, and in death itself, God is our Father, Jesus is our Brother, and heaven is our home. Let us approach God as children, and plead with Him as sons. He says to us, “Come near unto Me, My son, that I may bless thee.” His blessing maketh rich.”

The God who reigns above, we call
Our Father and our Friend;
And, blessed thought! His children all
Shall see Him in the end.

HOW IS IT NOW?

June 8, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

That’s an interesting question that can be applied to a lot of things. It came to my mind this morning as I was thinking about certain people who dropped out of church. In my mind I can still see their faces and hear their voices. Contrary to what they probably think, I miss them. Contrary to what they believe, I love them. I can’t help but wonder– “How is it now?” For whatever reason, you probably left with the belief that you would be better off. How is it now?

I remember when you were faithful in attendance, but how is it now? Are you in regular attendance at another church?
I remember when you took part in our Bible studies, but how is it now? Are you still a student of God’s Word?
I remember when you volunteered to help and filled a useful place in the church, but how is it now? What are you doing to serve the Lord?
I remember when your family worshiped with you, but how is it now? Is worship still an important part of life for your family?
I remember when you expressed great excitement in greeting your brothers and sisters in Christ, but how is it now? Do you miss them?
I remember when you asked the church to pray with you regarding the needs of your loved ones, but how is it now? Is prayer still an important part of your life?
I remember when you had a smile on your face and joy in your heart, but how is it now? Have you lost the joy of your salvation?
I remember when you had peace in your soul, but how is it now? Are you worried, fearful and troubled?
I remember when you- – – – . You are gone, but not forgotten! I truly hope that all is well and that you can answer all these questions on a positive note. However, if such isn’t the case please know that I am thinking about you, praying for you, and willing to help however I can. I want nothing but the best for you and your family. You might have anger toward me, but I have none toward you. I wish you well in all things.

It would thrill my soul to see you get back to the place where you once were and watch you enjoy life to the fullest. It is my prayer that God will help you get past the past and give you a glorious future. In all sincerity I say, I hope to see you soon! Please, think about it! Yours in Christ, Bro. Stone

TROUBLES

March 10, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“…trouble is near….” Psalms 22:11

Trouble and the Christian are seldom far apart, or long apart; this may sound discouraging; but Jesus and the Christian are never apart. He will never leave us, and trouble is intended to prevent our leaving Him, or to bring us back if we have already wandered. His loving heart guides the hand which smites; and nothing is done by Him, or permitted, but that it may be over-ruled for our good. Trouble may be near, but the throne of grace also is near; His word of promise is near; and He is near who justifieth us. In trouble God can glorify His grace, deepen His work in your heart, brighten your evidences, and fill you with joy and peace in believing; plead with Him to do so, let not trouble fill you with confusion, weaken your faith, or drive you from Him; but listen to, and act upon His word. He says, “Call upon Me in the day of trouble, I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify Me.” “I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honour him.” “Hath He said, and shall He not do it? Hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?” Every trouble is intended to endear Jesus to your heart. (James Smith, 1840)

This land, through which His pilgrims go
Is desolate and dry;
But streams of grace from Him o’erflow,
Their thirst to satisfy:
Jesus has all His saint can want,
And, when they need, He’ll freely grant.

THE ART OF IGNORING

June 4, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

I’m amazed by the way things happen, better yet–by the ways in which God puts things together, so as to test and teach us. Here’s an example. I just started an article that began like this—‘I’m still waiting for someone to write a book entitled ‘The Art Of Ignoring’. That’s something we all need to learn.” My rough draft went on to say, “Have you ever thought about the misery we bring upon ourselves all because we simply refuse to ignore the bad behavior of others? For some reason we feel we must react to it rather than just let it go”.

Well you can probably guess what happened next. Before I even finished the article someone put me to the test. It was a simple thing that probably went unnoticed by everyone but me, but it “ate my lunch”, as the old saying goes. The more I thought about it the angrier I got. I bet you know exactly where I’m coming from. Someone does (or doesn’t do) something that irritates you to no end and you can’t (won’t) forget it. You know it’s silly to let such a little thing ruin your day, but you do it anyway. Take this as a confession— I don’t always do what I’m telling you to do. Guess you could say I’m writing this for myself as much as anybody—I’ve found that to be good therapy! Now that I’ve got a better grip on myself let me try to finish what I started before I unravel again.

As I said, we make ourselves miserable, and often do some really stupid things, because we refuse to ignore the bad things other people do. And when you consider human nature and the rotten condition of the world there’s always something that gets under your skin, something that perturbs you, puts you in a foul mood and robs you of your joy. So, what do we do?

To start with, it would help if we had less pride and more pity— pity for the rude and crude people around us. After all, it’s better to be the victim than the perpetrator! We ought to feel sorry for those who hurt others, because in the long run they are hurting themselves. Our goal should be to help, not hurt them more as though that would make them better. Think about it. Our anger isn’t going to change the other person for the better. So what do we hope to gain by blowing our stack or wallowing in self pity? When we respond in kind to those who are unkind we become their kind. We become just like those who offend us. When we put our anger on display we make matters worse– like pouring gas on a fire. Those who make a mountain out of a mole hill end up creating a rough road for themselves. Don’t do it.

Nealy every pastor has made the mistake of addressing things that offended him from the pulpit. Then later he realizes that it would have been much better had he just ignored the issue, but it’s too late. Every married couple has had a big argument over something that started over a little thing that should have been ignored. And the list goes on. As long as we entertain the prideful attitude that says, “I’m not going to let others walk all over me, take advantage of me, embarrass me, ignore me, etc” we’ll always be bent out of shape about something. We would be much happier and more helpful if we learned to simply ignore them. By “ignore them” I don’t mean to ignore the person so as to hold them at arms length as though we want nothing to do with them, I mean ignore the issue that offended us. As Paul tells us in 1 Cor. 6:7 we ought to “take wrong” and even allow others to defraud us. Rom. 14:19 says, “ Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.” That’s not just good advice, it’s a command. To ignore this command makes us just as guilty as the person who offend us. How then do we have any right to protest? Think about it!

HEAR HIM

March 9, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Hear ye Him.” Matthew 17:5

Jesus speaks to us in His word; He tells us all His mind; and the Father commands us to hear Him. He speaks to us on a variety of subjects; He instructs, exhorts, warns, directs, and comforts. He always speaks in love. Every word is intended to do us good. Let us then take up His word and say, “I will hear what God the Lord will speak.” How much better this than to listen to Satan, unbelief, carnal reason, or men. Let us believe what He says, for He speaks truth; expect what He promises, for He intends to bestow; practise what He commands, for His ways are peace; and abstain from what He prohibits, for it is sure to be injurious. Hear Him, and plead His word in prayer. Hear Him, and oppose what He says, to fear, Satan, and appearances. Hear Him, and compare all doctrines with His word. Hear Jesus everyday, give Him your attention at least for a few minutes; you can hear nothing better than what He speaks; no one that has a greater claim upon your attention. Hearing Jesus with attention, prayer, and faith, will prevent a great number of real evils.(James Smith, 1840)

Jesus my Prophet, heavenly Guide!
Thy sweet instructions I will bear;
The words that from Thy lips proceed,
O how divinely sweet they are!
Thee, my great Prophet, I would love,
And imitate the bless’d above.
