WARMER ALREADY

January 14, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

Being hyper-sensitive to cold, I was shocked when I opened the door to my office this morning– it felt freezing! Yeah, I know it wasn’t really that bad, I’m just telling you how it felt to me. Just yesterday I had the a/c on and I had left the controls on that setting overnight, so no heat this morning. When the temp dropped into the thirties overnight the heater was off and the office was cold, and I’m uncomfortable. Having turned the heat on, I know it will be warm as toast in just a few minutes, but my mind is on now, and I’m cold and I don’t like it! Hopefully there’s a lesson in this.
In a speech before he became president, Lincoln said, “This too shall pass”. But that phrase originated long before he was born. It is said an Eastern monarch once charged his wise men to invent him a sentence, to be ever in view, and which should be true and appropriate in all times and situations. They presented him the words: “And this, too, shall pass away.” How much it expresses! How chastening in the hour of pride! How consoling in the depths of affliction!

Whatever uncomfortable situation you are in at the moment, know this–if you are a Christian things will get better. It’s just a matter of time! Don’t allow the difficulties of the day spoil your outlook on life and steal your joy– things will improve. For God’s children it’s always just a matter of time, because the best is yet to come. And it is my intention to never let you forget that!

Believe it or not, I’m getting warmer already. I’m almost in my comfort zone! I knew it would happen and it did. Now if I can just be that patient in all the other ares of my life–laboring on cheerfully, knowing that it’s just a matter of time until everything will be just right. Just knowing I would get warm made me more comfortable and just knowing the best is yet to come gives me “joy unspeakable and full of glory”( 1 Peter 1:8). Perhaps it will work for you also. Maybe you ought to spend some time today thinking about heaven (read 2 Cor. 5:16-18). It’s my guess that it will make you happy! Think about it!   HDS

HOPE THAT HELPS

February 11, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Hope thou in God.” – Psalms 42:11

However gloomy the day, however strange the trials, however distressing the visitation, hope thou in God. He is with you, He is your God, He hath promised to befriend you, He is the faithful God.

He will turn darkness into light, make crooked things straight, and make all grace abound towards you, so that you, having all sufficiency, may abound to every good work. The changes that affect you, cannot affect Him. You cannot rely too simply upon Him, or expect too much from Him. If all, within and without, seem to conspire to distress you, still say, “I will hope in God.”

Expect Him to be to you all a gracious and powerful God can be: expect Him to do all a loving Father and infinite God can do.
Hope for light in darkness, for relief in distress, for strength in weakness, for joy in sorrow, for deliverance when sinking beneath the wave, and for life in death. Hope for all you need, and for all God has promised. Hope thou in God, and in God alone. Hope because God has spoken, because He is true and faithful, and you cannot hope in vain. The foundation of your hope is laid in the blood of Jesus and the oath of God.–James Smith

Hope in the Lord, whose mighty hand
Can all thy woes remove;
For thou shalt yet before Him stand,
And sing restoring love.

A JERK

January 8, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

Strange–I just started to write an article on the subject of pride when I happened to see this article by Tim Challies. Since he makes the point so much better than I can I decided to use his article instead. I hope it will give you some food for thought.

“I’m kind of a jerk. For as long as I’ve been able to think about myself, my heart, my life, I’ve known that I’m a sinful person. I’ve never doubted the reality of my depravity. And if there ever had been any doubt, being married and having children and immersing myself in a local church has provided all the proof I, and they, need.

But lately I’ve been considering one simple and disturbing aspect of this sin: I’m better than you. At least, this is what I believe in most of life’s situations.

I’m just plain better than you. Somewhere deep inside I believe it’s true and too often I live and act like it’s true.

This is the old sin of pride, I suppose, the one we talk about so often but deal with so seldom, the one many people put at the root of all sin. And it’s amazing to me how much of my sin comes down to it. I think I’m better than you. Too often I’m just plain convinced of it.

When you choose to go left, my heart judges and condemns you because I am convinced it would have been better to go right. I don’t have nearly all the information you have, and probably only half the wisdom, yet in my heart I am convinced you would have made a far better decision if only you would have asked me to guide you.

When you lead your ministry, I have trouble following because I see all the things you are doing wrong, all the ignorant decisions you are making. I don’t know much about children’s ministry or music ministry or evangelism ministry or whatever else it is you lead, but I still have it all figured out. Come chat and I’ll be glad to set you straight.

When you are given a privilege or responsibility, something that puts you in a position of trust or authority, I am certain that the privilege should have gone to me. I suppose you will do okay, but I think we all know I would have done better. After all, I’m better than you.

This thread, this conviction of my own superiority, runs deep in the background of my life.

If you’re honest with yourself, you may well find that it’s in your life as well.

It matters. It matters because while God calls us toward Christlikeness, we prefer to call others toward us-likeness. God calls us to hold all things up to the light of his Word, while we prefer to hold all things up to the light of our own judgments and our own determinations. Ultimately, we all long for conformity to us rather than to Christ.

This makes us useless counselors. We are useless counselors unless we can counsel from Scripture and toward holiness rather than from our own arrogance and toward conformity to us. This makes us miserable because we are always convinced life would be easier and better if only others were more like us. This lessens our usefulness to God and his kingdom because we spend so much of our time lamenting all the things others are doing wrong rather than joining them in doing things their way. This increases our sin and hinders our holiness.

I’m kind of a jerk, I know it, and still I have the audacity to want you to be like me. It’s baffling. It’s gross. It’s sin. It’s pride.” Think about it!

A LITTLE SECRET

February 10, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“ Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.“ Psalm 119:18

Charles Spurgeon said, “Let me tell you a little secret: whenever you cannot understand a text, open your Bible, bend your knee, and pray over that text; and if it does not split into atoms and open itself, then try again. If prayer does not explain it, then it is one of those things that God did not intend you to know, and you may be content to be ignorant of it.

Prayer is the key that opens the cabinets of mystery. Prayer and faith are sacred picklocks that can open secrets, and obtain great treasures! There is no college for holy education like that of the blessed Spirit, for He is an ever-present tutor, to whom we have only to bend the knee, and He is at our side–the great expositor of truth!

You will frequently find fresh streams of thought leaping up from the passage before you, as if the rock had been struck by Moses’ rod! New veins of precious ore will be revealed to your astonished gaze as you quarry God’s Word and use diligently the hammer of prayer!”

“ Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come , he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear , that shall he speak : and he will shew you things to come .” John 16:13

“Every text prayed over opens a mine of ‘unsearchable riches,’ with a light from above, more clear and full than the most intelligent exposition.” (Charles Bridges)

“A humble and prayerful spirit will find a thousand things in the Bible–which the proud, self-conceited student will utterly fail to discern.” (J.C. Ryle)

“There should be a definite asking Him to graciously anoint our eyes–not only that we may be enabled to behold wondrous things in His law, but also that He will make us of quick discernment to perceive how the passage before us applies to ourselves–what are the particular lessons we need to learn from it. The more we cultivate this habit, the more likely that God will be pleased to open His Word unto us.” (Arthur Pink)

MY PRAYER FOR YOU

January 3, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

MY PRAYER FOR YOU
May you have enough—
— character to make you honorable
— trials to make you helpful
— sorrow to make you humble
— grace to make you healthy
— wisdom to make you holy
— faith to make you hopeful
— hope to make you happy
— love to make you hospitable
Then my friend, you will never be lacking in the things that matter most.
With these you will be blessed and a blessing.
Think about it! —HDS
