A GLORIOUS OPPORTUNITY

January 10, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Come unto Me.” – Matthew 11:28
Whether you view this as a command, counsel, or an invitation, it is a glorious opportunity for sinful man to reconciled to God who is holy. It is only because of grace that we could ever have such a wonderful privilege as this. Would we not be fools to reject Him? Think about all that would be lost. As James Smith wrote:

“Jesus calls you to His throne; He is there waiting to hear, relieve, and bless you. You are to go to Him just as you are, and receive from Him all you need.

He will give you wisdom, to direct your steps; peace, to keep your hearts; strength, to do His will; righteousness, to justify your souls; and rest, unspeakably sweet. He is glorified in bestowing these blessings upon you. He calls you this MORNING, this MOMENT, to receive without money and without price. What a precious Saviour is Jesus! What a kind and tender Friend!

Let us go boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. “Come,” He says, “come to Me; go not to self, to the world, to the empty cisterns which creatures idolize; but come unto Me, and I will do for you exceeding abundantly, above all you can ask or think. Your sins I will pardon; your graces I will revive; your comforts I will restore; your holiness I will increase; your efforts to glorify Me I will crown with success; I will bless you, and you shall be a blessing.”

O how great is Thy goodness, which Thou hast laid up for them that seek Thee; which Thou hast wrought for them that trust in Thee, before the sons of men!”

Jesus, with Thy word complying,
Firm our faith and hope shall be;
On Thy faithfulness relying,
We will cast our souls on Thee.

FLAG DAY

June 14, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress in Philadelphia passed a resolution which specified that the new country’s flag would have 13 stripes and 13 stars. The red represented valor, the white purity and the blue justice. An Act of Congress designating June 14 as Flag Day each year wasn’t passed until 1949. What transpired between these two dates?

In 1877, 100 years after the flag was adopted, Congress asked all public buildings to fly the flag on June 14 to commemorate that anniversary. They did, but it was a one-time thing, not something to be observed annually.

A Wisconsin schoolteacher, B.J. Cigrand, had his students celebrate June 14, 1885 as Flag Birthday. Four years later, a New York City kindergarten teacher, George Balch, planned a celebration of the flag with his students on June 14.

July 14, 1891 saw a Flag Day celebration at the Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia and the next year, the Sons of the Revolution of New York celebrated Flag Day.

In April, 1893, the Colonial Dames of America adopted a resolution asking the mayor of Philadelphia and all its citizens to diplay the flag on Flag Day, June 14. The Superintendant of Public Schools in Philadelphia proclaimed that June 14 would be known as Flag Day and that all school children in the city would assemble for exercises. Each child received a small flag. The governor of New York directed in 1894 that each year on June 14 all public buildings would display the American flag.

In 1916, a proclamation by President Woodrow Wilson established June 14 as a day to celebrate the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1877. Finally, on August 3, 1949, President Truman signed an Act of Congress directing that National Flag Day would be observed every year on June 14.

Since that time, flags have been flown on June 14 at public buildings and homes throughout the nation.– Pat McCarthy

SERVING WITH GLADNESS

January 9, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“Serve the Lord with gladness.”–Psalm 100:2
Delight in divine service is a token of acceptance. Those who serve God with a sad countenance, because they do what is unpleasant to them, are not serving him at all; they bring the form of homage, but the life is absent. Our God requires no slaves to grace his throne; he is the Lord of the empire of love, and would have his servants dressed in the livery of joy. The angels of God serve him with songs, not with groans; a murmur or a sigh would be a mutiny in their ranks. That obedience which is not voluntary is disobedience, for the Lord looketh at the heart, and if he seeth that we serve him from force, and not because we love him, he will reject our offering. Service coupled with cheerfulness is heart-service, and therefore true. Take away joyful willingness from the Christian, and you have removed the test of his sincerity. If a man be driven to battle, he is no patriot; but he who marches into the fray with flashing eye and beaming face, singing, “It is sweet for one’s country to die,” proves himself to be sincere in his patriotism. Cheerfulness is the support of our strength; in the joy of the Lord are we strong. It acts as the remover of difficulties. It is to our service what oil is to the wheels of a railway carriage. Without oil the axle soon grows hot, and accidents occur; and if there be not a holy cheerfulness to oil our wheels, our spirits will be clogged with weariness. The man who is cheerful in his service of God, proves that obedience is his element; he can sing,
“Make me to walk in thy commands,
’Tis a delightful road.”
Reader, let us put this question—do you serve the Lord with gladness? Let us show to the people of the world, who think our religion to be slavery, that it is to us a delight and a joy! Let our gladness proclaim that we serve a good Master.–Charles Spurgeon

A SICKENING PROCLAMATION

May 25, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

I just finished reading the “Memorial Day Proclamation” issued by the president. Although in agreement with what it says, I am very much aware of the fact that it was probably crafted by a clever wordsmith who serves as his speech writer. I expect that, as all presidents have probably done the same. That’s not what bothers me.

What troubled me as I read the proclamation was the thought of Benghazi and those brave men who lost their lives without our government lifting a finger to help them. That led to numerous other negative thoughts, but it was Benghazi that was at the forefront of my mind. I couldn’t shake it and it was shaking me emotionally, to the point that I had to speak out. Suddenly the words from the president rang hollow—even worse, they sickened me!

In typical politician fashion the president said what was expected–what he thought the people would want to hear. But action speaks louder than words. No man can mean what the president said and do what the president does. “Phony” doesn’t even begin to describe it. It is hypocrisy of the highest sort–the kind that needs to be exposed. The kind that we should never see in the “Commanding Officer” of the United States of America.

Our nation is being destroyed by the most corrupt and inept administration ever. To just sit back and watch it happen without a word of protest makes us as guilty as the perpetrators themselves. It is all the more hideous when it happens because of party preference and racial prejudice. Did I say it is “sickening”? People’s attitude toward Barack Obama and his administration is a defining moment in American history. As we pick up speed in our downward spiral it will become more and more difficult to stop it. Seems to me that it is now or never. Silence at a time like this is cowardly, not “golden”. How can we refuse to speak out when so much is at stake? If not now, when? If not ever, why? If not you, who?

I realize that many could say it better than I, but I don’t hear them– at least not many. I don’t have the ability to sway a nation with oratory, nor a speech writer to say it for me, so I will just speak for myself. Hopefully others will join the chorus of opposition to this administration and the workforce of those willing to labor to bring about change. Most of all let us join the ranks of those who pray for our country— knowing that it is only “under God” that we shall be able to stand. Think about it!

HE IS FAITHFUL

January 8, 2015 By Pastor David Stone

“There hath not failed one word of all His good promise.”(Read 1 Kings 8:54-61) John Henry Jowett wrote: Supposing one word had failed, how then? If one golden promise had turned out to be counterfeit, how then? If the ground had yielded anywhere we should have been fearful and suspicious at every part of the road. If the bell of God’s fidelity had been broken anywhere the music would have been destroyed. But not one word has failed. The road has never given way in time of flood. Every bell of heaven is perfectly sound, and the music is full and glorious. “God is faithful, who also will do it.”

“God is love,” and “love never faileth.” The lamp will not die out at the midnight. The fountain will not fail us in the wilderness. The consolations will not be wanting in the hour of our distresses. Love will have “all things ready.” “He has promised, and shall He not do it?” All the powers of heaven are pledged to the fulfilment of the smallest word of grace. We can never be deserted! “God cannot deny Himself.” Every word of His will unburden its treasure at the appointed hour, and I shall be rich with the strength of my God.
