THE END OF THE STORY

December 11, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:”–Colossians 1:20–22

The most important part of the Christmas story isn’t the shepherds or the angels or the wise men. In fact, the most important part of the Christmas story isn’t about the birth of Jesus at all. It is a wonderful gift of God’s grace that His Son came into the world to be born as a man, but that is just the beginning of the story—the introduction. To really understand Christmas, we have to look to the end of the story. The most important part of the Christmas story is the reconciliation to God that is offered through Jesus Christ.

Someone summed up the meaning of Christmas in these simple but beautiful words:

If our greatest need had been information,
God would have sent us an educator,
If our greatest need had been technology,
God would have sent us a scientist.
If our greatest need had been money,
God would have sent us an economist.
If our greatest need had been pleasure,
God would have sent us an entertainer.
But our greatest need was forgiveness,
So God sent us a Saviour.

There are a lot of things competing for our attention this time of year. It is right and proper that we enjoy the good celebrations of Christmas with family and friends. But we must never lose sight of what Christmas is about. “And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world” (1 John 4:14).–Paul Chappell

HOW TO HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR

January 1, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

Over the course of the next few days there is one word that we will hear again and again–that word is “Happy”. And, although the phrase “Happy New Year” will die out in a few days, the search for happiness will continue on throughout the year. Man never stops looking for it and, strangely enough, never really finds it. He discovers something that gives him a thrill and thinks he has struck gold, but it turns out to be fools gold. Then the thrill is gone and the search starts all over again.

Have you noticed—most people aren’t happy unless they are doing things enjoy? Few have learned to enjoy the things they do. Guess which ones are the happiest? For the former joy depends on circumstances. For the latter joy depends on choices. You can’t always control the first, but you can control the second. Guess which is the best. If you can’t be happy with what you have you won’t be happy when you get what you want, because you will never stop wanting.

Here’s something you need to be aware of. The choice of the joy-finder isn’t, strictly speaking, a choice to be joyful. It is instead a choice to yield themselves to the Holy Spirit. Joy is not the product of human effort. It is one of the graces that make up the fruit of the Spirit. The joy He provides is present even when we are forced to do things that are not enjoyable. That’s why regardless of how bad things are we can rejoice in the Lord. Circumstances might be terrible, but Christ is always the same–wonderful.

It is right here that most people make a train wreck of their life. They are on the wrong track and a wreck is bound to happen. Their interest is in happiness, rather than holiness. They want a crown without a cross. Their desire is to gratify the flesh, rather than glorify the Lord. They want to pamper self, rather than please the Savior. Then they wonder why the cup of life is filled with bitter dregs. The more they seek merriment the more miserable they are. Such a life is both senseless and sinful. In this we see the insanity of sinful man. He repeats himself over and over, doing the same thing again and again expecting different results. Not too smart!

It’s not until a man comes to himself that he comes to God. It is only then that he discovers the deepest desires of his heart— without even seeking after them! It is then that he is filled with wonder and overcome with amazement. To think that he has been running after things that cannot satisfy and from the only One who can fulfill the long-time longings of his heart shows what a fool he has been. So, what are you searching for? Happiness is something that comes to you, not something you come to by chasing after it. Happiness happens when we stop stop seeking it and start seeking to please God. Think about it!

AN HEIR OF GOD

December 10, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“…an heir of God through Christ“. – Galatians 4:7

Lots of people are thinking about what they want, but perhaps it would be better for us to think about what we have. Better yet, think about who you are—a child of God and an heir of God. Meditating on who you are and what you have in Christ affects how you view everything else in life. It makes life one big “Wow moment”, giving us joy unspeakable and full of glory. And as we view our past, present, and prospect from this vantage point life becomes a blessing rather than a burden. J. R. Miller wrote:

“By nature we are children of wrath; but union to Jesus exalts us to the highest pitch of honour and happiness. All our mercies flow through Jesus; we must ever look to Him as the medium of access to God, and of union to God.

If we are one with Jesus, we are heirs of God; to us He has willed all the riches of grace, and all the riches of glory. The testament is made and sealed, and all is secured to us by the oath of God, and the blood of our dear Saviour.

Oh, what an honour! To be the heirs of God! To possess and enjoy throughout eternity all that God can impart! Unutterable grace! We have enough secured to us while on earth; and we shall be put in full possession at the resurrection.

Let us then ascertain beyond a doubt, that we are the sons of God; that we have received the spirit of adoption; that we are united to Jesus; and daily walk with God. Let us live expecting the day when we shall be put in possession, and preparing for that glorious event. Let us walk worthy of the vocation wherewith we are called, with all lowliness and meekness, watching unto prayer.”

Let earth no more my heart divide;
With Christ may I be crucified:
To Thee with my whole soul aspire;
Dead to the world and all its toys,
To idle pomp, and fading joys,
Be Thou alone my one desire!

GOOD LUCK?

January 1, 2013 By Pastor David Stone

People depend on a lot of different things to bring them good luck in the New Year. It is a tradition to eat black-eyed peas and cabbage in most homes and since I love both I kinda like that, but some folks take it too far. One fellow said,”On New Year’s Eve I found a four-leaf clover in a patch of poison ivy, and now I’m waiting for a rash of good luck” Good luck buddy, but you better be careful about what you wish for! Let me make this simple, having a happy new year isn’t luck–“…whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he.”–Proverbs 16:20

WHAT DO YOU WANT?

December 9, 2014 By Pastor David Stone

“ And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies ; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;  Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.“–1 Kings 3:11-12

Near Christmas nearly every parent and spouse will be asking someone, “What do you want for Christmas?”. But, can you imagine receiving a message from God saying, “Ask what I shall give thee”! Given such a choice, what would you ask for? Solomon was in that exact situation and he made a wise choice. Our text is God’s response. Speaking of this J. R. Miller wrote:

“The Lord approved the choice Solomon had made. It was an unselfish choice. He was thinking of his people, and wanted to be a good king. It was a spiritual choice—not gold, power, victory, and fame—but wisdom to qualify him for duty, to fit him for fulfilling well his mission. Such a choice always pleases God. He loves to have us choose the best things.

James says that the reason men ask and receive not—is because they ask that they may consume God’s gifts on their lusts. The prayer of selfishness is never pleasing to God; but he is pleased when we ask for things to be used in blessing others. The prayer for mere earthly things, may really be for a curse upon our life. Midas desired the power to change whatever he touched into gold. His request was granted; and the fruits he plucked, and the food he would put into his mouth—all turned to gold, until in the agonies of starvation he was compelled to cry for the withdrawal of the power. It was a curse, not a blessing to him.

So it is with those who live only for wealth; they get it, but their souls are starving! Solomon asked for wisdom only, and left all other matters to God’s own choice. Jesus said, ‘Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.’ “
